Kyle Busch takes the Duck Commander 500

Kyle Busch stormed past race leader Martin Truex Junior thirty-three laps from the finish and kept his Number-18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in front the rest of the way to claim his second victory of the season on Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway. Busch led only thirty-four laps, but that included the ones that counted most as he beat runner-up Dale Earnhardt Junior to the checkered flag by four seconds. Joey Logano finished third with Jimmie Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports rookie Chase Elliott completing the top five.

Truex faded to sixth after his crew elected to bypass a final pit stop for fresh tires while other contenders – Busch included – got new rubber. Truex started third and led a race-high 141 laps in his failed bid for victory Number-1 of 2016. Carl Edwards started from the pole and was strong throughout the first half of the race, leading a total of 124 laps en route to a seventh-place finish.

With the win, Busch assures himself of a spot in this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with an opportunity to defend his 2015 championship. It was the second straight weekend sweep for Busch, who won Friday night’s X-FINITY Series race on the Fort Worth oval after claiming Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series victories at Martinsville Speedway one weekend earlier. Saturday’s win lifted Busch from third to first in the Cup Series standings, now six points ahead of Johnson and seven up on Kevin Harvick.

Busch’s victory gave Toyota its first Sprint Cup win at T-M-S since he was victorious in this event in 2013 … The race included seventeen lead changes among eight drivers. There were seven cautions for forty-one laps, including a thirteen-car accident along the backstretch less than forty laps from the finish.

Furniture Row Racing Withdraws Appeal

Furniture Row Racing has informed NASCAR that it has withdrawn its appeal of penalties that were handed down last week following rule violations at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Cole Pearn, Sprint Cup Series crew chief on Martin Truex Junior’s Number 78 Toyota, was suspended for one race and fined fifty thousand dollars. The team was docked fifteen championship owner and driver points. Pearn will serve his suspension during this coming weekend’s Good Sam 500 at Phoenix International Raceway, where Todd Berrier will fill the role of crew chief in his absence.

Truex – who qualified for The Championship 4 in last year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup –is ninth in the early-season standings, thirteen points outside the top five and trailing leader Kyle Busch by twenty-five points. His best finish in three starts thus far is second (behind Denny Hamlin) in the season-opening Daytona 500.

Pearn Suspended, Will Appeal

Cole Pearn, Sprint Cup Series crew chief on Martin Truex Jr.’s Number 78 Furniture Row Racing team, has been suspended for one race and fined fifty thousand dollars for an unspecified pre-race inspection violation last weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The team has been docked fifteen championship owner and driver points. Joe Garone, president of Furniture Row Racing, said in a statement that the team will appeal Wednesday’s penalties. Pearn’s one-race suspension and his fine will be deferred until the conclusion of the appeal process.

Randall Burnett, Sprint Cup Series crew chief on A-J Allmendinger’s Number-47 JTG Daugherty Racing team, was fined fifteen thousand dollars for a pre-qualifying inspection violation. The team has been docked ten championship owner and driver points … Similar penalties were also assessed to crew chiefs for the teams of Austin Dillon, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman and Michael McDowell … A total of eighteen teams across all three of NASCAR’s top national series were assessed penalties or given written warnings for rule violations last weekend in Atlanta.

Final Sprint Cup Series Power Rankings

With his victory in the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway and his first Sprint Cup Series championship, Kyle Busch closes the year atop the final Motor Racing Network Power Rankings. He went into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup as the Number-2 seed (behind Jimmie Johnson) and comes out as the thirty-first driver to win a championship in the sport’s sixty-seven-year history.

Kevin Harvick is second in the Rankings with Joey Logano, Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex Junior making up the rest of the top five. (For a complete list, visit http://bit.ly/1lIwb6d at MRN.com.)

In addition to his five race wins this season, Busch had one pole (for the August race at Pocono). He did all this in a twenty-five-race stretch after missing the first eleven races of the season while recovering from injuries suffered in February during Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway.

And speaking of Speedweeks, while we are only three days removed from the conclusion of the 2015 season, the 2016 season-opening Daytona 500 is just eighty-eight days away!

Next Stop Phoenix International Raceway

Next stop Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500, the next-to-last race of the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and the final stop in the three-week Eliminator Round. For the eight drivers remaining in the title hunt, there are just 312 “Miles-2-Miami.”

The twelfth edition of the post-season Chase will conclude November 22nd at Homestead-Miami Speedway, at which time only four drivers will remain in championship contention …With his victory November 1st at Martinsville Speedway, Jeff Gordon has assured himself of a spot in The Championship Four in South Florida. But at least two of the remaining berths will be filled based on the post-season point standings and right now, Martin Truex Junior and Carl Edwards are separated by just seven points in a fight for fourth place.

Five of the eight drivers remaining in the Eliminator Round of the Chase have won at least one Cup Series race in Phoenix: Gordon (in 2007 and 2011), Edwards (2010 and 2013), Kurt and Kyle Busch (both in 2005), and Kevin Harvick – who’s won the last four races on the one-mile desert oval and five of the last six dating back to the end of the 2012 season
