Next up, Auto Club Speeday for Sunday’s Auto Club 400, fifth race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series and the last stop of a three-week tour of the western United States. Brad Keselowski was victorious in Las Vegas and Kevin Harvick won last weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Sunday’s race will be contested on a wide, fast two-mile superspeedway – where Keselowski will be seeking his second straight victory. In winning last year’s race, the Team Penske driver gave Ford its first Fontana victory in the Sprint Cup Series since Matt Kenseth drove a Jack Roush-owned entry into the Winner’s Circle in 2009.

Jimmie Johnson leads all drivers with five wins at A-C-S and Rick Hendrick is Number-1 among team owners with nine victories … Kyle Busch continues to show early-season muscle in defense of his 2015 championship, posting four straight top-five finishes. He enters the weekend tied with Harvick for first place in the standings. They’re fourteen points ahead of third-place Johnson. Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards round out the top five. Edwards’ total of three top-five finishes through the first four races of the season is second only to Kyle Busch, who owns the Sprint Cup Series qualifying record at Auto Club Speedway. His quick lap of 188.245 miles per hour from 2005 still stands – eleven years later.

39 Entries For Cup Series Race

There are thirty-nine drivers on the preliminary entry list for Sunday’s Auto Club 400 including thirty-six “Charter” teams. The three non-Charter drivers are rookie Ryan Blaney, Cole Whitt and Josh Wise.

There are six Cup Series competitors who are signed up for double duty and will also drive in Saturday’s X-FINITY Series race: Blaney, Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Larson. Harvick is the defending race winner. Busch leads all drivers with six X-FINITY Series wins on the two-mile Fontana oval including a stretch of three in a row in 2010 and 2011.

Joe Gibbs leads all car owners with eight victories there, all coming consecutively from 2008 through 2012. Busch, Joey Logano and Tony Stewart contributed to that run of success.

Next Stop Phoenix International Raceway

Next stop Phoenix International Raceway  for Sunday’s Good Sam 500, fourth race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series and the second of three straight in the western United States. Brad Keselowski was victorious last weekend in Las Vegas and will arrive in Phoenix in search of his first Cup Series win on the one-mile oval. He has one victory there in the X-FINITY Series, in 2014.

Teams will get ninety minutes of practice Friday morning before qualifying late this afternoon. Ryan Newman holds the track record for poles with four including three straight from 2002 through 2004 … Kevin Harvick rolls into the weekend as a favorite to notch his first victory of the young season. The 2014 champion has won five of the last seven Cup Series races contested at P-I-R, including a streak of four straight that was halted by Dale Earnhardt Junior last fall. Harvick leads all drivers with seven wins in Phoenix, three more than his nearest challenger – Jimmie Johnson.Kyle

Kyle Busch has opened with a strong defense of his 2015 championship, posting three straight top-five finishes and leading the early-season standings by seven points over Harvick and Johnson – who are tied for second place.

Busch has one Cup Series win at Phoenix, in 2005. He’s won eight times in the X-FINITY Series and is entered this weekend to make his bid for a ninth victory.

Brad Keselowski Takes Kolbalt 400

Brad Keselowski charged past race leader Kyle Busch late in Sunday’s Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and kept his Number-2 Team Penske Ford in front over the final six laps to notch his first victory of the young season. Keselowski overcame a speeding penalty on pit road to claim his eighteenth career Cup Series win and first since March of last year at Auto Club Speedway – thirty-four races ago. Keselowski’s margin of victory over teammate Joey Logano was sixty-seven one-hundredths of a second. Jimmie Johnson led a race- high seventy-six laps and finished third in his bid for back-to-back victories after winning last weekend in Atlanta.

Busch grabbed fourth place with Austin Dillon completing the top five. Pole sitter Kurt Busch led only the first thirty-one laps and finished ninth, one of twenty-two drivers running on the lead lap with Keselowski at the checkered flag … The afternoon began with forty-mile-an-hour winds whipping across the mile-and-a-half desert oval and it looked for a while near the end of the day that Busch would blow the field away after seizing the lead on a late restart with a daring three-wide pass and pulling away. But the Number-18 Toyota developed a vibration in the closing laps that forced the reigning Sprint Cup Series champion to eventually surrender the lead to Keselowski.

Despite missing his second trip to Victory Lane this weekend … Busch won Saturday’s X-FINITY Series face, he did hold onto the early-season lead in the standings and enjoys a seven-point advantage over Johnson and Kevin Harvick – who are tied for second.

Sprint Cup Series Power Rankings

With a pair of third-place finishes to begin the season, Kyle Busch has climbed to the top of this week’s Motor Racing Network Power Rankings as he opens defense of his Sprint Cup Series championship. Jimmie Johnson pulled away from the field on an overtime restart Sunday and was first to the white flag as a four-car accident unfolded along the backstretch – ending the race under caution and leaving Johnson with his seventy-sixth career win that ties the late Dale Earnhardt for seventh place all-time. Most of the race was caution-free with just one yellow flag in the first 323 laps. With Johnson in the lead less than two laps from completion of the scheduled distance, Ryan Newman’s spin brought out just the second caution of the day that would force overtime. Johnson pushed his Number-48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in front of Kyle Busch coming out of the final restart, and put some distance between himself and the defending series champion before the day’s final caution ended the race. Dale Earnhardt Junior finished second, giving Hendrick Motorsports a sweep of the top two spots.

Busch finished third, one position ahead of older brother Kurt – who had started from the pole. Carl Edwards completed the top five … Kevin Harvick started sixth and led a race-high 131 laps before settling for sixth place. Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin finished sixteenth in his bid to become the first driver with back-to-back season-opening victories in the Sprint Cup Series since Matt Kenseth in 2009.

Chase Elliott was the highest-finishing rookie in the forty-car field, running eighth … Sunday’s race marked the debut of NASCAR’s 2016 low-downforce rules package. It produced twenty-eight lead changes, identical to last year’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Next Stop Atlanta Motor Speedway

Next stop Atlanta Motor Speedway  for Sunday’s Folds of Honor Quik-Trip 500, second race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series. NASCAR is debuting its low-downforce rules package. The so-called “low-drag” aerodynamic specifications were tested twice last year, at Kentucky Speedway and Darlington Raceway.

Those races were won by Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards, respectively. Jimmie Johnson is the defending winner of Sunday’s race and has four career victories on the mile-and-a-half Georgia oval. He’s the last driver with back-to-back Cup Series wins there, sweeping both races in 2007 en route to the second of his record five straight championships. Bobby Labonte leads all active drivers with six wins at A-M-S, the last of those coming in 2003.

Chevrolet and Toyota have combined to win the last six Cup Series races in Atlanta. Ford hasn’t gone to Victory Lane there since 2008 … Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin is bidding to become the first Cup Series driver to open a season with back-to-back victories since Matt Kenseth in 2009.

Final Sprint Cup Series Power Rankings

With his victory in the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway and his first Sprint Cup Series championship, Kyle Busch closes the year atop the final Motor Racing Network Power Rankings. He went into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup as the Number-2 seed (behind Jimmie Johnson) and comes out as the thirty-first driver to win a championship in the sport’s sixty-seven-year history.

Kevin Harvick is second in the Rankings with Joey Logano, Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex Junior making up the rest of the top five. (For a complete list, visit http://bit.ly/1lIwb6d at MRN.com.)

In addition to his five race wins this season, Busch had one pole (for the August race at Pocono). He did all this in a twenty-five-race stretch after missing the first eleven races of the season while recovering from injuries suffered in February during Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway.

And speaking of Speedweeks, while we are only three days removed from the conclusion of the 2015 season, the 2016 season-opening Daytona 500 is just eighty-eight days away!

Kyle Busch Crowned NASCAR’s Sixy-Seventh Champion

The 2015 Sprint Cup season began with Kyle Busch in a Florida hospital and it ends with the Joe Gibbs Racing driver being crowned NASCAR’s sixty-seventh champion Sunday night after he drove to victory in the season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Busch mastered the final restart and then pulled away from Kevin Harvick in the closing laps to claim his first Cup Series crown.

He broke his lower right leg and left foot in an accident in the X-FINITY Series season opener at Daytona in February and missed eleven races while recovering from those injuries. Busch returned with a championship resolve that produced a three-race winning streak at mid-year, paving the way for him to earn a post-season berth as the Number-2 seed behind Jimmie Johnson. Busch controlled The Championship Four much of the way in Sunday’s race, leaving the three other title contenders in his wake.

Harvick finished second, one-point- five seconds behind at the checkered flag. Jeff Gordon came home sixth in the final race of his storied careerwith Martin Truex Junior twelfth … Brad Keselowski was the highest-finishing non-title contender in Sunday’s race, taking third place, with Joey Logano and Kyle Larson completing the top five.

Sunday’s victory for Dale Earnhardt Junior is his third of the season and the twenty-sixth of his career – three of which have come at Phoenix International Raceway. The first two were back-to-back in 2003 and 2004 … Among active drivers, “Junior” is now third on the track’s win list behind Kevin Harvick (seven) and Jimmie Johnson (four).

Chevrolet has won five straight Sprint Cup Series races at P-I-R and six of the last seven … Johnson started from the pole, led the first forty-four laps and finished fifth in Sunday’s race.

Thus far, all nine post-season races this year have been won by drivers who were on the original sixteen-man Chase Grid.
