Oskaloosa Loses Conference Thriller to Norwalk

The Oskaloosa Indians and the #15 Norwalk Warriors were two evenly matched teams on paper prior to last night’s game; after the game, they can be called evenly matched on the court, too.

The Indians and Warriors met for a Little Hawkeye Conference duel last night and the game began in a dead heat. The two teams went back and forth in a tightly contested opening set, but the Indians, after being on the set point 25-24, couldn’t put the Warriors away, and Norwalk won it in extra points 28-26.

Oskaloosa responded to the heartbreak with a terrific performance in the second set. The Indians led 12-9 midway through the set before going on a 10-2 tear and cruising their way to a 25-15 win to make the set count even.

In the third set, the pendulum swung back in Norwalk’s direction. They opened the set on a 7-0 run and the Indians could never fully dig themselves out of that hole, bringing it to within two points late at 20-18 before the Warriors rallied for 5 consecutive points to go up 2-1 on a 25-18 win.

The fourth set saw the Indians face defeat, but in a set that was just as thrilling as the opener, the Indians came through. After Norwalk was on match point 24-23, Osky rattled off back-to-back-to-back points to win 26-24 and send the game to the make-or-break fifth set.

The final set of the night was back-and-forth with the two teams tied at 9-9 before the Warriors snatched the momentum back and enjoyed a 4 point run; it ended with the Warriors winning the fifth set 15-11 and the game 3-2.

Oskaloosa (7-5) travels to Southeast Polk for a tournament on Saturday. Norwalk (8-3) will host Newton next Tuesday.

Rents are starting to come down, but the trend may not hold

NEW YORK (AP) — Rents are starting to come down after spiking to record levels this past summer, but experts are uncertain if the slowdown will continue. Christopher Mayer is a professor of real estate at Columbia Business School. He says people looking for an apartment now might have a better experience than they did in May or June. The national median asking rent was up 14% in July over July the previous year. That’s the smallest annual increase since November 2021. Experts say the market could slow further toward the end of the year, but there’s still a lot of uncertainty.

Soybean conditions improve despite warm, dry week

By Jared Strong (Iowa Capital Dispatch)

Last week was very dry in Iowa, with the northwest quadrant of the state having little or no rain, according to the state’s weekly weather summary.

Yet, soybean conditions improved and corn was unchanged from a week ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Tuesday. Corn and soybeans were both rated 66% good or excellent in that report, a 3-percentage-point increase for beans.

The state averaged about a quarter inch of rain, which is less than a third of what is normally expected. The heaviest rainfall last week was in an area that is already sufficiently wet: More than 2 inches fell in far eastern Iowa.

The state also averaged about 1.4 degrees above normal temperatures. The trend of higher temperatures and lower rainfall amounts is expected to continue this fall.

The state as a whole is the driest it has been all year, according to a recent U.S. Drought Monitor report. An updated report that takes the arid past week into consideration is due Thursday.

Southeast Iowa currently has the driest soil, the USDA report said. Less than 20% of topsoil and subsoil in that region have adequate moisture for crops. In northeast Iowa, more than 85% of soil has adequate or surplus moisture.

Cedar Rapids Man Arrested on Charges from Wapello County Related to Inappropriate Text Messages

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office announced that after an investigation lasting over a month, a 19 year-old Cedar Rapids man has been arrested on charges related to inappropriate text messages sent to a 12 year-old girl.

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office reports that in July, the Ottumwa Police Department received a complaint from a family regarding their 12 year old daughter receiving inappropriate messages from someone over social media and via text messages on their cell phone that was possibly from an adult male. Police was granted permission to take over the social media account of the child and the child’s phone and continued communicating with the male.

Police were able to identify a suspect and also determined that the suspect resided in Cedar Rapids. During this investigation the suspect sent the victim illicit photographs of himself and also requested the victim send him nude images.

On Tuesday, the suspect was arrested in Cedar Rapids on his charges from Wapello County.

As a result of this investigation, Austin Jacob Kilberger, age 19, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested and charged with Sexual Exploitation of a Minor with Cause to Engage in Act, Enticing a Minor under age 13 with Sexual Exploitation, and Telephone Dissemination of Obscene Material to a Minor. Kilberger was transported to the Wapello County Jail where he is being held with a bond amount of $22,000.

Search ends for 9 missing in Northwest floatplane crash

WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — The search for nine people who were missing after a floatplane crashed in the waters northwest of Seattle has been suspended. The body of a 10th person was recovered by a good Samaritan on Sunday. The U.S. Coast Guard says all next of kin had been notified of Monday’s decision to suspend the search. The Coast Guard says the Northwest Seaplanes flight left Friday Harbor, a popular tourist destination in the San Juan Islands, and was headed to Renton Municipal Airport, the company’s base. The plane went down in Mutiny Bay off Whidbey Island, northwest of Seattle. The NTSB is sending a seven-person team to investigate.

National Alliance on Mental Illness exec says 988 working well in Iowa

By O. Kay Henderson (Radio Iowa)

The executive director of the Iowa chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness says while the 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has melted down in some other states, that hasn’t been the case here. NAMI Iowa’s Peggy Huppert says that’s because the two crisis response services in eastern Iowa that have been handling 988 since it launched in July had been fielding suicide prevention calls and texts for some time.

“They were used to working together,” Huppert says. “And were used to working together with local law enforcement and other providers across the state.”

Foundation 2 Crisis Services in Cedar Rapids is handling Iowa phone calls to 988. CommUnity Crisis Services in Iowa City is handling text messages to 988 and has been contracted to handle texts from other states that aren’t being answered quickly. Goals set for 988 include responding to a text or answering a phone call within 30 seconds. In July, the average pick-up time in Iowa was 18 second for phone calls.

“I’m really impressed with that,” Huppert says. “We do want to have people call for help and get immediate help.”

Being able to text the 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is critical, according to Huppert. “If you’re under a certain age, that’s just how you communicate, so we absolutely have to have that capability,” Huppert says.

CommUnity recently reported a 788% increase in the text messages it answers from Iowans and other states. CommUnity is a national back-up center for texts to the 9-8-8 National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Foundation 2 Crisis Services in Cedar Rapids answered more than 1100 suicide hotline calls from Iowa in July. That’s 55% above the monthly average from January through June.

Indians Pull Away Late, Get First Win of Season at Knoxville

A week after a heart-wrenching defeat at the hands of the Ottumwa Bulldogs, the Oskaloosa Indians needed a spark to right the ship. Early in their road tilt against the Knoxville Panthers, it didn’t look like that spark would be presenting itself.

The Indians and Panthers spent the first quarter mostly faltering on offense. The Panthers saw junior quarterback Noah Keefer connect on a 30 yard completion to senior Konnor Leslie in the first quarter to put their offense in the red zone, but just two plays later, a well-executed hit by junior James Woods on senior running back Andon Trout jarred the ball loose and the Indians recovered to get the ball back. The first quarter ended without a score for either team.

Enter: Waylon Bolibaugh. The star senior wideout sat out the first quarter for the Indians but wasted little time making his mark. Less than 1 minute and 20 seconds into his time on the field, Bolibaugh hauled in a deep heave from junior QB Trevor Willett and rendered the unfortunate members of the Knoxville secondary helpless as they watched him scamper by, all the way to the end zone for a 51 yard score. Freshman kicker Linus Morrison, who was just called up to varsity this week, tacked on the extra point to make it 7-0.

The Osky defense responded to the explosive play on the other side by forcing a punt, but the good times didn’t last; a fumbled exchange on a handoff saw the Indian offense give the ball back to the Panthers. Keefer promptly launched a 35 yard completion down the sideline to TE Koby Higginbotham to put the Panthers on the doorstep before RB Ruger Kendall punched it in from one yard out. Kicker Luka DeJong missed the PAT wide left and the score was 7-6 Indians. The first half ended two drives later without either team mustering a notable effort on offense.

The third quarter was a dragged-out affair. Each team committed a slew of penalties and had issues getting the correct personnel on special teams. It wasn’t until there were under 5 minutes left in the quarter when lightning struck once again for Trevor Willett and Waylon Bolibaugh, who connected on a very similar scoring play to their connection in the first half: Willett launched a 50-50 pass that Bolibaugh outplayed his man to bring in, Bolibaugh made a man miss, and was off to the races for a 55 yard touchdown. Morrison added the PAT to make it 14-6 with 4:42 remaining in the 3rd.

The Indians defense completely shut the Panther offense down in the second half. Noah Keefer had completed 3 of 7 passes for 74 yards in the first half, but began the second half 0/8, and Andon Trout was unable to find running room in the interior of the defense. The Indians’ front 4 routinely got excellent penetration and the linebackers were frequently called upon to blitz, making it count far more often than not.

Midway through the 4th, Willett and Bolibaugh completed the hat trick. On a drive that started on their own 8 yard line, Willett connected on a quick pass to junior WR AJ Lawrence, who had sat out the first half, on a 39 yard catch and run that saw 15 yards tacked on the end via a personal foul. Another personal foul – this time, a facemask – on the next play, a 7 yard run by sophomore RB Dom Piersel, had the Indians in business. Three plays later, Willett lobbed a pass to the end zone for Bolibaugh and he gathered it for his third touchdown of the night, a 25 yard score to make it 21-6 with 6:44 remaining.

The Indians’ defense held on from there, and AJ Lawrence picked off backup QB Brenden Woolsey at the Panthers’ 35 yard line and answered a house call to put an exclamation point on the victory. The Indians won by a final score of 28-6.

The Indians (1-1) continue their non-district schedule at Burlington next week. The Panthers (0-2) will travel to Carlisle.

Fed is hoping August hiring report will show slowdown

WASHINGTON (AP) — Raging inflation has so scrambled the economy that it’s come to this: If Friday’s jobs report for August were to show a significant hiring slowdown, the Federal Reserve — and even the White House — would likely welcome it. The government is expected to report that employers added 300,000 jobs last month, according to a survey of economists by the data provider FactSet. That would be down sharply from a blockbuster gain of 528,000 in July and an average of about 440,000 over the past three months. A weaker pace of hiring should help moderate wage increases and lift hopes that inflation pressures are starting to ease.
