Rihanna promises a ‘jam-packed’ Super Bowl halftime show

PHOENIX (AP) — Rihanna is putting in the work ahead of her Super Bowl halftime show, focusing so hard on what she promises will be “a jam-packed show” that her upcoming birthday and Valentine’s Day almost slipped her mind. At a press conference Thursday ahead of Sunday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, the music superstar and new mom said her appearance — her first live event in seven years — feels “like it could have only been now,” adding “At the end of the day, if it flops or it flies, my name has to stand by that.”

DNR: January Water Summary Update

DES MOINES – The start of 2023 was encouraging for water resources in Iowa.  Precipitation for the month was 1.82 inches, nearly double the normal moisture.  All of Iowa’s reporting stations reported near to above-average precipitation.  The US Drought Monitor remained largely unchanged for the month.  Streamflow, soil moisture, and shallow groundwater conditions are showing some improvement, but continued above normal precipitation is needed.

“January was the third month in a row of above-normal moisture for Iowa, which is the trend we need to see.  Continued wetter than normal conditions are needed throughout the winter and spring months to significantly improve drought conditions in Iowa,” said Tim Hall, Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ coordinator of hydrology resources. “Average monthly precipitation typically increases each month until July, so we are hoping to see diminishing drought designation in the months ahead.”

Disney to cut 7,000 jobs in Iger’s company ‘transformation’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Walt Disney Co. says it will cut about 7,000 jobs as part of a “significant transformation” announced by CEO Bob Iger. The job cuts amount to about 3% of the entertainment giant’s global workforce and were announced Wednesday after Disney reported quarterly results that topped Wall Street’s forecasts. Iger returned as CEO in November following a challenging two-year tenure by his handpicked successor, Bob Chapek. The company says the job reductions are part of a targeted $5.5 billion cost savings across the company. In its latest results, solid growth at Disney’s theme parks helped offset tepid performance in its video streaming and movie business.

Special traffic enforcement planned for Super Bowl weekend

By Pat Powers (Radio Iowa)

There’ll be lots of parties this weekend for the big game and there will also be plenty of patrol cars on the road looking for drunk and impaired drivers.

Sergeant Paul Gardner of the Iowa State Patrol says an extra enforcement effort is planned to try and get everyone home safely. “In 2022 there was a spike in deaths across the country with 244 people killed in traffic deaths and the 12-hour period during and after the Superbowl game,” Gardner says. He says a study of the similar time period one weekend later showed 187 deaths.

Gardner says the increase in Superbowl Sunday deaths was also linked to drunk driving.  He says 46 percent of those during the Superbowl Sunday night who were killed in traffic crashes, alcohol was a contributing factor. Gardner says they don’t want to see the weekend end on a bad note.

“Our plan is to have everyone make it to the end zone– which is home safely — and your MVP, your most valuable player in this case is going to be a sober designated driver to get home safely,” Gardner says.

Gardner says if you are hosting a party, make sure all your guests have a way to get home if they have been drinking.

Ottumwa City Council Approves Maximum Property Tax Dollars for FY24

By Sam Parsons

The Ottumwa city council met earlier this week and held a public hearing for the city’s maximum property tax dollars for FY24.

City administrator Philip Rath walked the council through the numbers, which ultimately reflect a 0.02% increase in the maximum tax levy. He said that the levies for the general fund, emergency levy, and Bridge View Center are already maxed out, but that the rest of the changes were based on projections, such as a projected 8% increase in property insurance costs.

The council also discussed their proposed ordinance regarding UTV usage within the city of Ottumwa. The ordinance has been in the works since November, and the final version of it allows for UTV usage with some stipulations, including that they may only be operated on city streets with a designated speed limit of 35 mph or lower, and during the snow season, they may only be operated on streets that have not been plowed. Other regulations include the disallowance of operation on city trails, parks, sidewalks, or on an operating railroad right-of-way. The first reading of the ordinance was passed and the second reading will be held at the council’s next meeting on February 21.

And the council approved a request from the police department to apply for a grant to help purchase 40 body-worn cameras. The grant, which would be through the Small Rural Tribal Body Worn Camera Program, would reimburse the city for half of the purchase price. The request was approved unanimously.
