Iowa star Caitlin Clark makes surprise appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live’

NEW YORK (AP) — Live from New York, it’s Caitlin Clark!

The Iowa star made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” during the show’s “ Weekend Update ” segment.

She said she first heard about the possibility at the Final Four although discussions had been ongoing for a couple of weeks.

“I didn’t know the script until I showed up and saw it, and was like this is very good,” Clark told the AP on Sunday. “Set them straight about women’s sports was pretty phenomenal. The crowd was great. Way more nervous than I get for a basketball game. A bucket list item.”

The Iowa star is in New York for the WNBA draft on Monday night, when she is expected to be the top pick by the Indiana Fever.

The NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer showed up after anchor Michael Che made a joke about Iowa retiring her jersey. Clark got the last laugh as Che then read some more jokes that Clark said she wrote that made fun of the comedian.

“A lot of cast members came up to me and were so excited I was there and said they always watched us,” Clark said. “Before they pushed me in on the chair my heart was beating through my chest.”

The Iowa native then delivered a heartfelt message about her basketball future, thanking many of the great players who came before her.

“I’m sure it will be a big first step for me, but it’s just one step for the WNBA thanks to all the great players like Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, the great Dawn Staley, and my basketball hero, Maya Moore,” Clark said. “These are the women that kicked down the door so I could walk inside. So, I want to thank them tonight for laying the foundation.”

Clark came back on stage at the end of the show, bringing her former Hawkeye teammates Kate Martin, Gabbie Marshall and Jada Gyamfi with her.

“It’s so cool, they got into New York City yesterday,” Clark said of her teammates. “The producer asked if they wanted to go up on stage at the end. They got a little shellshocked at first, but it’s cool that I can share these moments with them.”

Clark watched the first half of the show from the dressing room so as not to spoil the surprise for the fans. She got to see musical guest Chris Stapleton’s second performance from on the set after her appearance.

It’s been a busy week for Clark since her team lost to South Carolina in the national championship game in Cleveland. She went to Los Angeles to accept the John R. Wooden Award, had a rally at the Iowa arena to celebrate the team and now is in New York.

DNR says Walleye collection was successful

By Dar Danielson (Radio Iowa)

Iowa DNR spokesman Peter Hildreth says the annual walleye collection was successful.

“The goal is to collect enough fish to hatch 154.8 million walleye fry that will supply Iowa lakes and fish hatcheries,” Hildreth says. He says the eggs are removed from the walleyes and the fish are returned to the lake where they were caught to make room for the next night’s catch. “Our broodstock lakes have excellent wildlife populations and the timings have been perfect the staff have all the wildlife they need to fill the jars to get 1,738 quarts of eggs,” he says.

Hildreth says they worked on several different lakes. “Spent five nights at Storm Lake, four nights at Rathbun, two and a half nights on Spirit Lake, and two nights on Clear Lake. And in those short nights of efforts, like I said they collected all the wildlife they need to meet our goals,” Hildreth says. The fish will be stocked into Iowa’s lakes after growing to the proper size at the fish hatcheries.

Oskaloosa Schools Celebrates Success at FBLA State Leadership Conference

OSKALOOSA, IOWA — Seven Oskaloosa High School students from the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) made an impressive inaugural appearance at the recent State Conference, marking a significant milestone for the school’s new business extracurricular program.

Students representing OHS were Emma Adams, Cam Cassens, Kara Harman, Maci Huebschen, Isabelly “Izzy” Modesto, Raya Probst, and Taylor Six. The event, which gathered chapters from across the state, showcased the dedication and talent of Oskaloosa High School’s FBLA members. “We competed, and we put our name out there as a new chapter,” remarked Cam Cassens, a senior and FBLA advisor at Oskaloosa High School. “It was a privilege for our chapter to attend this conference and participate in various competitions at the state level.”

Kara Harman, a sophomore and another advisor of the FBLA chapter, highlighted the significance of the event. “Not every chapter could attend due to funding and logistical constraints. However, we were determined to make our presence known, and we did just that,” said Harman.

Despite being in its first year, the Oskaloosa High School FBLA chapter showcased exceptional performance at the State Conference. “We had one member who placed third in their event and several others who performed admirably, including myself,” stated Cassens. “Considering it’s our first year, we’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

Oskaloosa’s success with individual achievements includes Raya Probst securing 10th place in Introduction to FBLA, Isabelly “Izzy” Modesto earning 3rd place in Marketing, Kara Harman placing 9th in Introduction to FBLA, and Emma Adams achieving 8th place in Job Interview.

Noteworthy achievements include Kara Harman’s campaign for District 5 vice president, during which she articulated her values and vision for the future of FBLA chapters. Her efforts were commendable and reflected her leadership qualities.

The success of the Oskaloosa High School FBLA chapter can be attributed to its proactive approach and commitment to learning about business. “We’ve focused on fundraising activities to simulate real-world business scenarios, competed in various events, and even established our own storefront to raise funds for the chapter,” explained Harman.

Looking ahead, the chapter aims to expand its influence and continue its impressive trajectory. “We want to get recognized at not just the state level, but potentially at a national level as well,” expressed Cassens. “We’re also working on initiatives to involve middle school students, ensuring a pipeline of talent for the future.”

“We are incredibly proud of our students’ accomplishments at the FBLA State Leadership Conference,” said Ms. Mouton, FBLA Adviser. “Their dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm exemplify the spirit of excellence we strive to cultivate in our students. Congratulations to all our participants for their success!”

In addition to competing, students also participated in valuable workshops, which provided them with opportunities to network and collaborate with FBLA chapters from across the state.

With over 20 members currently involved in the chapter, Oskaloosa High School FBLA continues to thrive. Plans for upcoming events include a Family Fun Night for Headstart and a community service project benefiting the local animal shelter.

In addition to the remarkable achievements of the Oskaloosa High School FBLA chapter at the recent State Conference, it’s important to acknowledge the new organization’s financial challenges.

“Investing in the future of our students is paramount, and financial constraints shouldn’t limit their access to valuable opportunities like FBLA conferences,” emphasized Mouton. “We’re determined to overcome these challenges by seeking sponsorship from local businesses. Together, we can ensure that every student who wants to participate has the chance to do so, regardless of financial barriers.”

Looking ahead, the chapter aims to address this challenge by seeking sponsorship to offset costs for future events

Kansas City Chiefs’ Rashee Rice surrenders to police on assault charge after high-speed crash

GLENN HEIGHTS, Texas (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice surrendered to police Thursday on charges including aggravated assault after he and another driver of a speeding sports car allegedly caused a crash involving a half-dozen vehicles on a Dallas highway last month.

A spokeswoman for Rice’s attorney confirmed to The Associated Press that Rice turned himself in at the Glenn Heights Police Department. Rice is being represented by Texas state Sen. Royce West.

Rice was booked into the Regional Jail in DeSoto, and West said he was released on bond Thursday night.

In an emailed statement, West emphasized what he called Rice’s “continued cooperation with law enforcement.”

“Mr. Rice acknowledges his actions and feels deeply for those injured as a result of this accident,” the lawyer said.

Rice said last week on Instagram that he was taking “full responsibility” for his part in the wreck.

On Wednesday, Dallas police said arrest warrants had been issued for Rice, 23, for one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury.

West said previously that Rice was driving a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle when the crash happened March 30.

Theodore Knox, 21, was driving the other speeding sports car, a Corvette, police said, and arrest warrants were issued for Knox on the same range of counts as for Rice. Dallas police said Thursday night that Knox was not currently in custody.

Southern Methodist University said earlier in the day that, after learning of the arrest warrant, Knox had been suspended from its football team. Knox’s attorney, Deandra Grant, said her client was cooperating with law enforcement.

Police have alleged that Rice and Knox were speeding in the far left lane when they lost control, and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain collision.

Rice and Knox allegedly left following the crash without determining whether anyone needed medical attention or providing their information, according to police. Four people involved in the crash had minor injuries, police said.

Rice grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills and played college football at nearby Southern Methodist, where a breakout senior season in 2022 put him on the radar of NFL teams.

The Chiefs selected him in the second round of last year’s draft, and he became one of the few dependable options in their passing game.

The Wood Iron Grille’s final day of business is Friday, April 12. The new Elmhurst Grille will open on Wednesday, April 17, and will continue the tradition of high-quality service and menu items. While owners Michael Glesener and Matthew Gunn are transitioning out of the business, the rest of the team is continuing on with the Elmhurst Grille.

“We’re super thankful for our employees and our customers and are grateful for the huge outpouring of support over the past several weeks,” said Michael Glesener. “It’s been a real joy and honor to be a part of serving this community.”

EVOLVE Hospitality President Matt Jacobs said, “We’re looking forward to continuing to offer fare that customers know and love, with minor revisions to add a new spin to the menu. As we get started, we’ll first focus on great food and great service. In the coming months, we’ll work through interior updates and the dining experience. We’re known for the hospitality we deliver – and we can’t wait to add some personal touches to the new Elmhurst Grille.”

Glesener, Gunn, and Jacobs explained the short transition timeline. On Wednesday, April 10, the State of Iowa approved a liquor license for the new Elmhurst Grille. With that approval, the Wood Iron Grille liquor license expires on Sunday, April 14, and the Elmhurst Grille license is in effect beginning on Monday, April 15. The few days the restaurant is closed will allow for a full change over in ownership and training.

As shared previously, gift certificates will continue to be honored at the Elmhurst Grille.
