By Sam Parsons

The 28th Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America came through Oskaloosa yesterday. Over 150 motorcycle riders made a pit stop at Kelderman Manufacturing on Highway 92 and racing fans got to meet a few racing legends, including Richard Petty and Kenny Wallace, all while having the opportunity to donate to the charity that the ride benefits: Victory Junction.

Petty said that the city of Oskaloosa had rolled out the red carpet in ways that even he wasn’t used to.

Victory Junction President and CEO Chad Coltrane has been touring with the riders. He said that the charity ride was the single largest source of donations for the camp every year, and highlighted some of the good work they do.

Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt spoke briefly at the event and read a proclamation from the city of Oskaloosa that May 6, 2024, would be known as Kyle Petty Charity Ride Day in the city.

Tom Brady’s Netflix roast features lots of humor, reunion between Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Three months before Tom Brady gets roasted by critics as Fox Sports’ top NFL analyst, he took his share of barbs from comedians, former teammates and his longtime coach Sunday night during a made-for-streaming comedy live event on Netflix.

And it is safe to say after the one liners and jokes Brady heard during three hours of “The Greatest Roast of All Time” at The Forum, he will do just fine.

“It’s like a football game. You run with a game plan, and then you get to see kind of how the strategy goes, and then you adjust on the fly,” Brady said before the event. “This is what a locker room has been like for me for all these years. So it’s not like I’m used to people not making fun of me.”

Comedian Nikki Glaser, whose monologue was among the funniest of the night, termed the roast as “the comedians’ Super Bowl” and how the competition level was ramped up because everyone wanted to one-up each other.

Brady sustained more blitzes and pressure than he did during an average NFL game as an impressive lineup of comedians, former teammates and opponents took the stage . Host Kevin Hart said before the event that no topic was off limits, and Hart went on the offensive early with jokes about Brady’s ex-wife, Gisele Bündchen.

“Gisele gave you an ultimatum. She said you retire or we’re done. When you got a chance to go 8-9 and all it will cost you is your wife and your kids, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” Hart said, referring to Brady coming out of a brief retirement in 2022 for one more season.

The only time Brady objected to a joke was when Jeff Ross made a reference to Patriots owner Robert Kraft and massages. In 2019, Kraft originally received a misdemeanor charge that he paid for sex at a Florida massage parlor. Prosecutors later dropped the charge after courts blocked the use of video from cameras installed by police inside the massage parlors.

Brady walked up to Ross and said in his ear “don’t say that (stuff) again”, but it was clearly caught on the microphone and heard by those watching the roast at home. It was not heard by those in attendance.

Later, Kraft and former Patriots coach Bill Belichick did a shot together on stage after some coaxing from Hart.

Belichick was fired in January after 24 seasons with the Patriots, and a lot has been written about friction between the six-time winning Super Bowl coach and owner over the past couple years.

After joking about this being like a reunion and “unlike many family reunions there are some people I am desperately trying to avoid”, Kraft praised Belichick for what the two accomplished.

“I want to say this is the greatest coach in the history of the game that did what no one else has done. And having Tom Brady and him was the greatest honor the good Lord gave me,” Kraft said.

It wasn’t the first shot (of alcohol) that Belichick took. Rob Gronkowski got Belichick and Brady to do a shot together after his monologue. Gronkowski celebrated by spiking his shot glass.

Belichick appeared at the beginning of the roast during a pre-taped segment when he told Brady that he was “starting the roast” instead of Drew Bledsoe. Brady replaced Bledsoe in 2001 when Bledsoe was injured in a Week 2 game against the Jets and led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl title that season.

“For all of you out there who think about who’s responsible for the Patriots success during the time Tom and I was together — was it Tom or me — in reality the truth of the matter was it was both of us because of me,” Belichick said.

Brady did have some fun at Belichick’s expense though near the end of the show.

“I’ve been out of the game for a minute, so I’m curious, how many Super Bowl rings have you won since I left?,” Brady said. “Maybe it’s not just the guy on the sideline. When I go to the Indy 500, I don’t ask the winning driver, `Hey, you gassed up your car?;”

Hart said before the show that he thought Brady was in a great mindset going into the event. Brady did come in well prepared, going over his monologue with a group of people, including those at Fox Sports.

“You have to be able to laugh at yourself and I love that he is doing in this forum,” Hart said. “I love that he is embracing the things that some people think he runs away from. It is a celebration of greatness and we are doing it in a fun way.”

Bledsoe also said that Brady has had a sense of humor, but that this was a different stage.

“I thought he was very brave. There’s plenty of material to make fun of him on,” Bledsoe said. “The truth is when you’re a professional athlete, roasting each other is kind of what we do every day in the locker room. And so, you better have thick skin going in. Now, people get to laugh along with it.”

OTTUMWA — Shortly after midnight on May 3, 2024, the Ottumwa Fire Department was requested by the Centerville Fire Department to assist with a boat rescue. Sony Pictures and private equity firm interested in buying Paramount for $26 billion, AP source says

CULVER CITY (AP) — Sony Pictures and the private equity firm Apollo Global Management have expressed interest in buying Paramount Global for $26 billion, according to a person familiar with the details.

Sony would be the majority shareholder and Apollo would have a minority stake, according to the person, who requested anonymity because details of the offer have not been made public.

The Sony-Apollo offer was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The Journal reported previously that Apollo had made an offer to buy Paramount on its own but Paramount’s board had concerns about the bid, including whether it could arrange financing for a deal.

The Journal and others have reported that Paramount is considering a possible merger with Skydance, David Ellison’s media company that has helped produce such Paramount releases as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.”

Earlier this week, New York-based Paramount said that Bob Bakish would step down as CEO of the film, television and multimedia company, to be replaced by a troika of executives who will form a new “Office of the CEO.”

Governor requests quick federal disaster declaration for 9 counties after tornadoes

By Dar Danielson (Radio Iowa)

The Governor is requesting an expedited Presidential Disaster Declaration for nine Iowa counties hit by the severe storms and tornadoes on April 26th.

The governor is asking for funding from FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program and access to the U.S. Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Program for Clarke, Crawford, Harrison, Mills, Polk, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Shelby, and Union Counties. At least 24 tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down.

The request says the towns of Crescent and Minden in Pottawattamie County saw the most damage. One person died from injuries suffered in the Minden tornado, the town’s water plant was destroyed, and over 50% of the homes were damaged, leaving an estimated 30,000 cubic yards of debris from demolished homes and trees.

The FEMA program provides recovery assistance to homeowners, renters, and businesses for housing, personal property replacement, medical expenses, and legal services. The SBA Disaster Loan Program provides homeowners, renters, businesses, and most nonprofit organizations in the affected counties whose property was damaged or destroyed by this disaster, the ability to apply for low-interest disaster loans.

The governor has also requested funding to conduct hazard mitigation activities for the entire state.

Ottumwa Man Arrested After Pit Bull Attacks Child

OTTUMWA — On May 1, 2024, at approximately 7:03 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department received a 911 call from 1508 Chester requesting an ambulance for a 9-year-old female victim who had been attacked by a dog.  Police and emergency personnel responded and determined that the 9-year-old girl had been attacked by a pit bull inside this residence.

The victim was transported to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center where she was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics via air ambulance for treatment for her injuries.  The child suffered severe injuries to her face, head, right arm and shoulder, and hand, as a result of the dog attack.

The dog was transported to a local vet office and euthanized.  Remains of the dog also had to be sent for rabies analysis due to the animal not having proper vaccinations.

The owner of the pit bull admitted that the animal was a pit bull mix that he had since it was a puppy.  As a result of the investigation, police arrested Bradford Allan Henry, age 48, of 1508 Chester, Ottumwa.  Henry turned himself in to the police department at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 2nd.

Henry was charged with the following City of Ottumwa Local Ordinances: Animals Which Bite and Keeping Dangerous Animals.  Both of these offenses are simple misdemeanors.  Henry was taken to jail and posted bond and was released.

So the public is aware, the victim in this case was familiar with the family and this dog.  This child did nothing wrong on this day to justify the actions of this animal.

OTTUMWA — In cooperation with the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Delta Dental, Kick It Forward, and Musco Lighting, the Ottumwa Community School District will add three more soccer mini-pitches to the community this summer.

With the installation of Musco Mini-Pitch System™ solutions at Douma Elementary School, James Elementary School, and Pickwick Early Childhood Education Center, the community will now have access to nine mini-pitches, each providing a safer and more enjoyable place for children and families to enjoy the health and team-building benefits of sports.
“The addition of these mini-pitches to our school district has increased community usage of our facilities, brought together our neighborhoods, and unified the community,” said Ottumwa School District Superintendent Michael McGrory. “We’re grateful for our partners for helping us provide these resources that allow kids and families to get outdoors and stay active.”
Each mini-pitch is equipped for basketball and a faster-paced variant of soccer called futsal. They come with built-in goals, fencing, lighting, benches, custom surfacing, and ADA-accessible no-barrier access. Existing mini-pitches are at Wilson, Liberty, Horace Mann, and Eisenhower Elementary Schools, as well as Evans Middle School, which has a double mini-pitch.
“The district has set the gold standard when it comes to investing in their community and students,” said Matt Sahag, founder and president of the nonprofit Kick It Forward. “If you want to search for a soccer ecosystem, look no further than the Ottumwa School District.”
Ed Foster-Simeon, president and CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation, added, “We are thrilled to partner with Musco, Delta Dental, and Kick It Forward to bring three more mini-pitches to Ottumwa. These mini-pitches will provide a safer place for the community to play and gather while also ensuring more children have opportunities to benefit from our game.”
Musco has installed more than 300 mini-pitches in the U.S., with a growing footprint in local communities like Ottumwa. The company is collaborating with U.S. Soccer Foundation in the Foundation’s goal of bringing 1,000 mini-pitches to the U.S. by the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
