False report of sexual assault investigated

An investigation by the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office determined a reported sexual assault didn’t happen.  Last Thursday (10/18), the Sheriff’s Office received a complaint by a 13-year-old boy from Fremont. The boy said he’d been sexually assaulted at his home by a 23-year-old woman three weeks earlier.  During the investigation, Sheriff’s officials interviewed the boy a second time and he admitted to making up the story.  The boy has been charged with filing a false report of an indictable offense to a law enforcement agency.  That is a serious misdemeanor and it has been filed with juvenile authorities.

Oskaloosa volleyball ended their season last night

Oskaloosa’s volleyball season is over.  The Indians were swept at Clear Creek-Amana last night in the Class 4A Region 7 semifinals.  The scores were 25-14, 25-21 and 25-21.  Oskaloosa Coach Jen Comfort says her team played some good volleyball in a very competitive match.  Three seniors graduate, but Comfort says there’s plenty to work with for the future.

“It’s always hard to lose three seniors, but I think we have some really good building blocks here, the foundation is strong. And girls that you’re not seeing on the court playing are working really hard behind the scenes and really getting ready.  Girls like Jessica Schlessleman, she’s going to be a senior next year,  she hasn’t seen the court much, but she’s working her tail off in practice every single day to make us better. There’s girls like her, the whole group, and the freshman class are ready, just chomping at the bit, ready to play Osky volleyball.

Freshman Faith DeRonde had 11 kills for the Indians, junior Taylor Wills had nine.  Clear Creek-Amana’s Calia Clubb had 13 kills plus three blocks for the Clippers.  Oskaloosa ends the year with a 12-19 record.

Clear Creek-Amana will play Pella for the 4A Region 7 title next Monday.  Pella defeated Carlisle three sets to one in Tuesday’s other semifinal.  Pella will host that region title game on Monday (10/29).

Image of iceberg captured by NASA looks like a perfect rectangle

Usually when we think of icebergs, we don’t imagine perfect geometric shapes.  But that’s exactly what NASA captured in an image posted on Twitter of an iceberg in what appears to be the shape of a perfect rectangle.  The image was captured during a flight for Operation IceBridge, the largest airborne survey of Earth’s polar ice.  It even has a name: A tabular iceberg, a type of iceberg both broad and flat.  “The iceberg’s sharp angles and flat surface indicate that it probably recently calved from the ice shelf,” according to a statement from NASA.

The iceberg is believed to have broken off from the Larsen C ice shelf, where a giant iceberg the size of Delaware calved last year. The iceberg represents one trillion tons of ice.  NASA’s IceBridge mission will use instruments to map Arctic and Antarctic regions annually. They conducted flights over Greenland between March and May, and will continue flying over Antarctica through November.
