Authorities say a 13-year-old was driving during a 100-mph chase

Authorities say a 13-year-old driver led officers on a chase that hit speeds of 100 mph (161 kph) in eastern Iowa.  She and five other young people in the van were taken into custody early Sunday after the van was stopped on the west side of Davenport.  The chase began in Blue Grass after the van was spotted by an officer checking a report of vehicle break-ins. The van was finally stopped after deflation devices punctured all four of its tires.

Authorities say the van was reported stolen in Rock Island, Illinois. The young driver was arrested. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

Snow emergencies in effect for most of Southern Iowa

The snow has finally stopped.  A blizzard hit southeast Iowa Sunday (11/25) with the Oskaloosa area heaviest hit.  The National Weather Service says 17 inches of snow fell in Oskaloosa, with 16 in University Park, 15 inches in Bussey, 14 inches south of Knoxville, 12 inches of snow in Sigourney, 11-point-6 inches northeast of Blakesburg and 11 inches in Albia.

Road crews have been busy plowing the streets around the region.  Roads may still be a bit slippery, so give yourself extra travel time.  The Iowa DOT says Highway 63 North of New Sharon is in seasonable driving condition, but south of New Sharon to the Missouri state line, Highway 63 is snow-covered. Also, Highway 163 from Oskaloosa to Monroe is snow-covered; Highway 92 from west of Oskaloosa to Keota is snow-covered; Highway 22 between Wellman and Thornburg is snow-covered; Highway 21 south of Thornburg is snow-covered; and Highway 34 from Ottumwa going west is snow-covered, with 34 east of Ottumwa being partially covered.

Meanwhile, a Snow Emergency remains in effect for Oskaloosa until further notice.  That means no on-street parking until the roads are cleared.  And Pella has a Snow Ordinance in effect; vehicles parked on a city street, alley or parking lot may be ticketed.

And several area schools are closed today: Oskaloosa, Albia, Cardinal-Eldon, Centerville, Chariton closed with no evening activities.  EBF, Knoxville, Melcher-Dallas, Ottumwa—including Seton Catholic closed. Pekin, Tri-County, Twin Cedars closed with no evening activities.  No classes today at William Penn University.  Indian Hills Community College is now closed at all locations.  Buena Vista University in Ottumwa is also closed today.

North Mahaska and Pella will both start two hours late with no morning preschool.

Also the Oskaloosa Senior Center is closed today.  Peek-A-Boo Point Child Care Center is closed.  No home-delivered meals today from the Albia Leisure Lounge.  The Christian Opportunity Center in Oskaloosa is closed.  All locations of River Hills Community Health Center will open at 11am.  And the Ottumwa Public Library will open at noon today, with today’s Music and Movement class cancelled.

Country stars performed at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade

Perhaps one of the most beloved Thanksgiving Day traditions is the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and this year’s celebration boasted no shortage of superstar country performances.   Kane Brown, Carly Pearce, Sugarland, Martina McBride, and Tegan Marie all headed to NYC to take a ride and perform on the famous route.

Brown rode on the float “Mount Rushmore’s American Pride” from the South Dakota Department of Tourism, while Pearce rode on the “Harvest in the Valley” float from Green Giant.  McBride rode Balsam Hill’s “Deck the Halls” float while  Sugarland was atop The Cranberry Cooperative float from Ocean Spray.  Also appearing on the parade route  performing this year were John Legend, Diana Ross and her family, Leona Lewis, Pentatonix and more.

Among the new floats to brigade this year were the sweet “Fantasy Chocolate Factory” from Kinder, “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” from Nickelodeon, “Santa’s Saint Bernards Save Christmas” from Elf Pets and the Elf on the Shelf, and a brand new “Tom Turkey” float from Macy’s, a redesign of the longest-running title float in the parade’s history.

One teen dead and two others injured after Alabama mall shooting

One teen is dead and two others have been injured following a shooting at an Alabama mall prior to Black Friday shopping.  Authorities say the shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, a nearby suburb of Birmingham.  Police say a fight between two teens, including an 18-year-old, resulted in a gunfire exchange.  One teen fled but was confronted by two Hoover police officers.

Captain Gregg Rector said at a news conference that a Hoover officer “did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene.”  The second teen was hospitalized in serious condition. Rector said a 12-year-old girl also struck by gunfire was hospitalized. Her condition was not immediately known.  The Riverchase Galleria said the mall was closed until 7am this morning.
