Lake Red Rock ice conditions are unstable
If you’re thinking about going on to the ice on Lake Red Rock, don’t. The US Army Corps of Engineers says ice has begun to form on the shoreline and bays around the lake—but ice conditions are unstable because of dropping water levels. Receding water levels can cause ice conditions to change quickly and the thickness of the ice can vary within short distances. So the Corps recommends staying off the ice on Lake Red Rock.
Oskaloosa boys’ basketball remains #1 in state 3A rankings

Pella also enters the 3A poll this week at number ten. And as fate would have it, the Indians will host Pella Friday night (12/21). But before that, Oskaloosa travels to Norwalk tonight (12/18).

GM says it has 2,700 jobs for workers slated to be laid off
The General Motors’ massive 14,000-person layoff announced last month might not be as bad as originally projected. The company said Friday that 2,700 out of the 3,300 factory jobs slated for elimination will now be saved by adding jobs at other U.S. factories. Blue-collar workers in many cities will still lose jobs when GM shutters four U.S. factories next year. But most could find employment at other GM plants. Some would have to relocate.
GM still plans to lay off about 8,000 white-collar workers and another 2,600 factory workers in Canada. In November, GM announced plans to end production at the U.S. factories and one in Ontario as part of a restructuring.
Legislators and President Donald Trump have hammered GM over the layoffs. GM says the factory hires were in the works before its announcement.

December 14th: On this day
On this day in 2013, Dwight Yoakam was involved in a mid-air scare after the plane he was travelling in began to billow smoke. The musician was travelling aboard a twin-engine Hawker 800 jet after performing at a birthday party in Canada’s Northwest Territories when the plane’s pilot reported an engine fire to air traffic control at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles and requested emergency services be placed on stand-by. The plane eventually landed safely and the fire crew discovered the engine was smoking, but not on fire.
Governor Reynolds was in Sigourney this morning
Governor Kim Reynolds visited Sigourney Friday morning (12/14), specifically to see a new donut shop in town. Oh Donuts is a unique donut shop, making whole grain and gluten-free donuts. The Governor gave a thumbs up to their donuts.
“What a great concept..not to mention that all of the ingredients are organic. The source all the ingredients locally and in the state of Iowa, which I think is amazing.”
Reynolds says her visit gave her an idea for 2019.
“I’d like to have a Startup Day at the Capitol and have start-up companies from all across the state come in and just talk about what they’re doing, what’s working, maybe what some of the barriers are so that the legislators have a chance to hear first-hand.”
Reynolds also got to try her hand at making donuts. She says it’s a skill that would make her more popular with her grandkids.
