On this day in 2006, The house where Johnny Cash lived for 35 years was bought by Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb. The rustic house near Nashville, Tennessee went on the market in June 2005 with an asking price of $2.9m (£1.7m). Gibb said he planned to preserve the house to honour the Cash memory. Unfortunately Gibb’s ownership of the house was short-lived. In April 2007, the house burned to the ground. Gibb was having the house renovated when a flammable spray sealer caused fire to break out during construction.

Thrift store sells vintage items to help animals in need

A Heartland thrift store is now open to help animals in need. Patty’s Animal Thrift Store recently opened in Fairfield. “It was started in honor of my dear friend Patty Miller who passed away in May of 2017 very unexpectedly,” said trustee Pam Brackenbury.
It was Patty’s love for animals that inspired the shop and its cause. “Her parents were animal lovers, the whole family. She had a goose named Colonel when she was a very young girl. [She] spent her life taking care of strays and sick animals—anything that crossed her path. She was a volunteer at the Blank Park Zoo up in Des Moines where she lived. She could just never walk away from an animal in need,” she explained.
The proceeds that come from the merchandise sold will help animals directly. “It’s going to go to groups in rural Iowa that are dedicated to animal rescue and a lot of these groups are very small and are struggling for funds and so we’ve decided to focus there,” Brackenbury said.
In the shop, you’ll find a variety of unique items like one-of-a-kind mugs and vintage toys. “Patty had, like I said, a 50-year collection and part of it has already gone to auction, but we have a lot of stuff left, stuff in storage still even. We do have a vintage room here in the store,” said Brackenbury.
Despite its recent inauguration the shop has already started to help some animal rescue organizations. “We were able to send $1,000 to Heartland Humane Society over in Ottumwa,” she said. Patty’s Animal Thrift Store is located at 50 S. 9th St. across the Family Video store in Fairfield. It is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Patty’s Animal Thrift Store accepts just about all kinds of donations that could be sold to save a defenseless animal in need.
Heartland residents have already donated items. Clothes, large appliances, furniture and toys are not accepted due to space limitations.
A former Osky cop gets April trial date

A former Oskaloosa police officer charged with domestic abuse will face jury later this spring. Janay Pritchett faces three misdemeanor counts, including Display or Use of a Weapon. On Thursday, a judge set Pritchett’s trial for April 9 in Montezuma. Pritchett’s trial has been moved from Mahaska County to Poweshiek County on a change of venue; she remains on administrative leave from Oskaloosa Police.
Pritchett was arrested in May of last year after a fight with her girlfriend. According to court records, the girlfriend told investigators she and Pritchett were arguing. Pritchett then kicked her in the chest, pulled a pocketknife and cut her on the left side of her neck and the threatened to shoot her. The most serious charged is an aggravated misdemeanor. Pritchett could face up to two years in jail.
Her next scheduled court date is a March 7 pre-trial conference.
Union sues GM, says laid-off workers should replace temps

The United Auto Workers union is accusing General Motors of violating a national contract by using temporary workers instead of employing full-timers who were laid off from its factories. The union filed a federal lawsuit in Cleveland alleging that GM has temporary workers at its pickup truck plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The lawsuit says GM has about 1,000 workers on layoff from several factories who should be working at the plant. The UAW says its contract with GM requires it to hire the laid-off workers, including 690 at a small-car plant in Lordstown, Ohio, which is scheduled to close in March.
The legal move is another sign of acrimony between GM and the union ahead of negotiations on a new contract that will start this summer. GM’s contract with the union expires on Sept. 14.
GM wouldn’t say how many temporary workers are employed in Fort Wayne, but the company says it started the process late last year to bring in about 50 laid-off Lordstown workers. About 35 will be working in Fort Wayne by the end of January, GM said in a statement. The company said it’s talking with the union about staffing in Fort Wayne, and it declined further comment. In November, GM announced plans to shutter five factories this year as it adjusts to lower demand for cars.

Also tonight, our Game of the Week on KMZN AM & FM features EBF hosting Centerville. Erick Zamora will have the play-by-play of the boys and girls doubleheader starting at 6:30pm tonight.

TOBY KEITH TO PERFORM AT OKLAHOMA GOVERNOR’S INAUGURATION

Toby Keith is kicking off a new year with a performance in his home state. The country star — an Oklahoma native — will be on hand to sing at the inauguration of the newly elected Oklahoma Governor, Kevin Stitt, on Jan. 14.
Keith will be joined by “Best Shot” singer Jimmie Allen, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the Cherokee Youth Choir at the Oklahoma City inaugural ball. Tickets are $250 for what is a black-tie event. The Oklahoma City inaugural ball is one of three events being held in January in Lawton, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla., to celebrate the newly-elected Republican governor.
Keith recently released a new song, “Don’t Let The Old Man In.” The song is featured in Clint Eastwood’s latest film The Mule and serves as the lead single off Keith’s forthcoming album. According to a press release, Keith spent some time with Eastwood last May at the actor’s golf tournament in California. While the two men shared a golf cart, their conversation turned to what Eastwood was working on next.
“Funny you should ask,” Eastwood told the country star, “I am leaving tomorrow to shoot a movie for three months called The Mule.” Keith asked the 88-year-old how he keeps up such a schedule at his age, to which Eastwood replied: “I don’t let the old man in.” The song was born.
In addition to new music on the horizon, Keith’s 2018 served as the celebration of his debut single “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and first album. Released 25 years prior, the single and self-titled debut album were remastered, retitled Should’ve Been a Cowboy and re-released last year. “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” was the most-played country song of the 1990s.
US average for gasoline seen peaking at $3 a gallon in May

A price-tracking service says the national average for gasoline will surge to about $3 a gallon by May before easing the rest of 2019.
GasBuddy predicted Wednesday that the full-year average price will settle at $2.70 a gallon, about 3 cents lower than 2018. The U.S. average is about $2.22 a gallon now, down 70 cents from three months ago due to lower oil prices.
GasBuddy predicts prices will rise this spring as OPEC cuts oil production and the U.S. economy remains strong, generating demand for gasoline. Oil prices climbed Wednesday. Benchmark U.S. crude rose 2.5 percent to $46.56 a barrel in afternoon trading in New York. International Brent crude was up 2.2 percent to $55 a barrel in London.

An Eddyville woman has been arrested for identity theft. The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office says 31-year-old Virginia Mitchell was arrested around 6:40 Tuesday night (1/1) and later charged with identity theft and having stolen credit cards.
