Heckethorn to claim self-defense at murder trial
An Ottumwa man accused of murder and attempted murder plans to claim self-defense at his trial.
Wapello County District Court records say the attorney for 19-year-old Jacob Heckethorn filed notices last week, as required by Iowa law whenever self-defense will be claimed. Heckethorn has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in the August 23 slaying of William Shettlesworth. He has also pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder. Police say he shot at but missed Dustin Greene on August 23 in Ottumwa and shot Clifford Collett Senior on August 16 in Ottumwa.
Police arrest student suspected of planning mass shooting
Police in California say they have arrested a middle school student who was planning to carry out mass shootings at two Napa schools.
Napa police said in a statement Monday that they thwarted the planned attacks on River Middle School and Vintage High School thanks to a fellow student who alerted authorities.
It says investigators arrested the 14-year-old suspect on Jan. 2 after they searched two homes and found evidence he was researching and planning a mass shooting.
The student remains in custody and was not identified.
The police department says it started investigating on Dec. 31 when a student told police a classmate who was planning the attacks threatened to kill him if he warned anyone.
FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE ANNOUNCE 2019 CAN’T SAY I AIN’T COUNTRY TOUR
Florida Georgia Line have announced the dates and cities for a massive 2019 tour. The duo’s Can’t Say I Ain’t Country Tour is set to launch in June.
Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley are set to release their fourth studio album, Can’t Say I Ain’t Country, on Feb. 15. They will embark on their tour in support of the new record on June 13 in Rogers, Ark. The tour runs through Sept. 28 before wrapping up in Irvine, Calif.
“We’re ready to party even bigger in 2019,” Kelley says in a press release. “Lots of pyro, energy, and good vibes, with a few surprises up our sleeves. And we’re so glad to be bringing our buddies along for the ride!”
Dan + Shay and FGL’s “Up Down” collaborator Morgan Wallen will join them on the road as support acts. Canaan Smith and Hardy will appear on select dates. “We can’t wait to get back out and play all of these new songs for you!” Hubbard exclaims. “It’s going to be fire!”
FGL have also revealed that FGL Fest will return on Sept. 7, 2019, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Florida Georgia Line are slated to perform, along with Dan + Shay, Nelly and Mitchell Tenpenny, with more acts yet to be announced. Tickets will go on sale to fan club members beginning at 10AM ET on Jan. 14, Citi Cardholders on Jan. 15 at 10AM ET and the general public via Ticketmaster.com, LiveNation.com, and IMS.com) on Jan. 18 at 10AM ET.
“Simple” was already a No. 1 hit from FGL’s upcoming album. They’ve also shared a song called “Colorado” online, and released “Talk You Out of It” to country radio. Florida Georgia Line were recently nominated for their first Grammy Award for their collaboration with Bebe Rexha on “Meant to Be.”

Wapello county man arrested after shooting
Wapello County law enforcement says a man drunkenly fired a rifle from the front deck of a camper trying to bag a deer, but instead shot a woman in her home. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the shooting happened Friday evening (1/4) outside Ottumwa. The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office says a 73-year-old woman was cleaning her stove when she heard a loud noise and felt pain to the back of her head. When she saw that she was bleeding heavily, she drove herself to Ottumwa Regional Hospital. Doctors later removed a bullet from the back of her head. Deputies arrested 34-year-old Lee Joseph Ryals of Chillicothe, whom they believe fired a rifle from the camper at a deer while he was drunk. Ryals is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and reckless use of a firearm. Conservation officers have also charged him with several hunting violations.
Oskaloosa school board meeting last night
The Oskaloosa School Board voted Tuesday (1/8) to spend $193,000 on a new security system. 194 cameras will be installed to cover all of the school district’s facilities. The Board also tabled proposed changes to the Elementary School’s leadership structure; Superintendent Paula Wright did not give details and said she is still gathering information. It was also announced Tuesday that Grade 3 through 5 Principal Tim Veiseth will step down at the end of the school year and that high school and middle school librarian Patricia ErkenBrack will retire at the end of the school year.
Oskaloosa boys basketball falls in the AP rankings
From first to fifth. After a two week break for the holidays, the Associated Press released its Iowa state boys’ high school basketball rankings Monday (1/7). Oskaloosa fell from first to fifth in the Class 3A poll after the Indians lost twice before the Christmas break. Both teams that beat Oskaloosa are also in the 3A poll: Pella is ranked fourth and Norwalk seventh. Oskaloosa’s next game is Friday night at home against Pella Christian; we’ll have that game on KBOE-FM and the No Coast Network.
In the AP’s Class 1A boys’ poll, Montezuma remains second with Lynnville-Sully receiving votes.
Monday night in boys’ high school basketball: EBF defeated Twin Cedars 80-22, North Polk edged Grinnell 75-74 and Pella Christian over Knoxville 80-39. Girls’ basketball: Sigourney defeated WACO 57-25, Pella Christian edged Knoxville 47-45 and PCM over Grand View Christian 71-29.

Thirteen country acts including George Strait are heading to the 2019 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Kacey Musgraves will kick off the concerts at Houston’s NRG Stadium Feb. 25. Additional headliners for that week include Prince Royce, Brooks & Dunn, Luke Bryan, Cardi B and Turnpike Troubadours. Strait will close the shows on March 17 with Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen.

Former Uber driver pleads guilty in deadly 2016 shooting spree
A Michigan man charged with killing six strangers between picking up rides for Uber pleaded guilty to murder on Monday, just before attorneys were set to interview jurors for his trial. Jason Dalton’s surprise move came about three years after the shootings, which occurred over the course of a few hours in and around Kalamazoo. Dalton pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder over his attorney’s objections, triggering a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance for parole on Feb. 5. “Yes, I’ve wanted this for quite a while,” Dalton replied when a judge asked if the pleas were voluntary.
The 48-year-old Dalton answered “yes” to a series of questions, admitting that he shot eight people at three locations. After his arrest, police quoted Dalton as saying a “devil figure” on Uber’s app was controlling him on the day of the shootings.
Four women were killed in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant: Barbara Hawthorne, Dorothy “Judy” Brown, Mary Lou Nye and her sister-in-law, Mary Jo Nye. Rich Smith and his 17-year-old son, Tyler Smith, were fatally shot while looking at a pickup truck in a dealer’s lot. Abigail Kopf, who was 14 at the time, was shot in the head during the restaurant shooting and survived. Tiana Carruthers was injured in a residential area.
Dalton had been deemed competent to stand trial and last week dropped an insanity defense. In court, he didn’t explain why he randomly shot eight people. Dalton, the father of two children, had worked as an insurance adjuster and had no previous criminal record before the February 2016 shootings. Prosecutor Jeff Getting said the motive behind the shootings is a question that “haunts us.” “Everybody wants to know,” he said during a news conference after the court hearing.
Defense attorney Eusebio Solis said he advised Dalton not to plead guilty. “But in speaking to Mr. Dalton, there are reasons” for the plea, Solis told Judge Alexander Lipsey. “There are personal reasons for him. He does not want to put his family through that, or the victims’ families, through the trial. It’s his decision.”
A gun shop owner said Dalton bought a jacket with an inside pocket designed to hold a gun just hours before the rampage. Shop owner Jon Southwick recalled Dalton “laughing and joking,” and giving a “one-armed hug” to the manager before making the purchase.
