Pres. Trump calls for bipartisanship, a hard line on immigration

Face to face with emboldened Democrats, President Donald Trump called on Washington to cast aside “revenge, resistance and retribution” and end “ridiculous partisan investigations” in a State of the Union address delivered at a vulnerable moment for his presidency.

Trump appealed Tuesday night for bipartisanship but refused to yield on the hardline immigration policies that have infuriated Democrats and forced the recent government shutdown. He renewed his call for a border wall and cast illegal immigration as a threat to Americans’ safety and economic security.

Trump accepted no blame for his role in cultivating the rancorous atmosphere in the nation’s capital, and he didn’t outline a clear path for collaborating with Democrats who are eager to block his agenda. Their opposition was on vivid display as Democratic congresswomen in the audience formed a sea of white in a nod to early 20th-century suffragettes.

Trump is staring down a two-year stretch that will determine whether he is re-elected or leaves office in defeat. His speech sought to shore up Republican support that had eroded slightly during the recent government shutdown and previewed a fresh defense against Democrats as they ready a round of investigations into every aspect of his administration.

Freezing drizzle continues Wednesday morning; another wintry mix on the way

Lingering freezing drizzle could create slick spots on the roads Wednesday morning. Several parts of eastern Iowa remain under winter weather advisories.  Another system is set to bring freezing rain and sleet.  A break in precipitation is likely from late morning through mid-afternoon Wednesday.

The next system will bring more precipitation including some snow overnight into Thursday morning. The entire system wraps up Thursday afternoon.  Total freezing rain and sleet accumulation will be 0.1″ to 0.2″ range in many areas.  For Thursday’s commute,  be careful of freezing rain that could create slick conditions and slow traffic.

Total snowfall over the northwest half will be in the 1 to 3-inch range, with locations from a Dubuque-Cedar Rapids line and southeast receiving 1 inch or less.

Temperatures fall with the gusty northwest winds on Thursday. Expect lows to be a few degrees below zero by Friday morning.

State of the Union Address tonight to highlight immigration, trade

Tuesday night is the night. President Donald Trump finally gets the opportunity to deliver his the State of the Union Address.  It was originally supposed to happen last week, but it was postponed because of the government shutdown.

The president’s second State of the Union Address is titled “Choosing Greatness,” and it will cover five major topics.

According to a senior administration official, they include:

-The president’s vision for a “safe and legal immigration system.” Although, it’s not certain if the president will declare a national emergency for building a wall on the border with Mexico.
-Protecting American workers. The administration says Americans have been hurt by decades of flawed trade deals, and the president will call on Congress to approve the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
-Investment in infrastructure — a topic the president has been talking about for years.
-Lowering the cost of health care and prescription drugs.
-Diplomatic and military efforts and the president’s desire to bring an end to “endless foreign wars.”

Tuesday’s speech comes as another shutdown looms if Congress and the White House can’t come to a funding agreement. The senior administration official says the president will call on Congress to “reject the politics of resistance.”

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will deliver the Democratic response. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says Abrams knows what working and middle class people go through.

Winter weather advisory issued for this afternoon

Driving could get slippery Tuesday afternoon (2/5).  The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory that takes effect at noon today until midnight.  Periods of snow, sleet and freezing rain will cause travel difficulties.  Several areas could see a glaze of ice.  There isn’t a lot of precipitation in the forecast–less than an inch of snow and sleet, plus one to two tenth of an inch of ice–but that’s enough to cause problems when driving. Drivers should plan on a slick commute Tuesday night, and some roads could be ice covered. The Ottumwa area is expected to get the highest amounts of precipitation. Expect a repeat of Tuesday on Wednesday…and Thursday.

Mahaska County Board meeting held yesterday

At a work session following Monday’s (2/4) regular Mahaska County Board meeting, the County Board met with officials from Oskaloosa and Pella and the South Central Regional Airport Agency.  The topic was how to deal with the loss of 220th Street if the airport is built.  220th is frequently used by farmers to get on to Highway 163.  But the plot for the proposed airport would remove 220th Street.  Mahaska County Board Chair Mark Groenendyk tells the No Coast Network what was agreed to at the work session.

“We’re looking at 235th Street (as an alternative).  They would like our secondary roads engineering department to come up with a rough physical number of dollars of what it would take to get 235th up to a farm to market road to handle the traffic required on losing 220th Street.”

It’s expected a rough estimate of the cost of creating an alternative for 220th Street will be ready in two weeks.  The Mahaska County Board, SCRAA officials and others will hold another work session on March 4.
