Lisa Uphold Named a 2018 ‘100 Great Iowa Nurse’

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – Mahaska Health Partnership Keokuk County Hospice Nurse Lisa Uphold has been named to the 2018 listing of “100 Great Iowa Nurses.”

Uphold will be honored with other recipients at a special ceremony recognizing National Nurses Week on Sunday, May 6 in Des Moines. This year’s nominees were nominated by colleagues, patients, doctors, friends and family members representing over 40 Iowa counties.

The field of nominees were narrowed to 100 by a panel of reviewers, including nursing professionals, and previous honorees based off of the nominee’s concern for humanity, contribution to the profession, leadership and mentoring.

Since she joined MHP in 2013, Uphold has proven to be an outstanding example for fellow nurses. “Lisa has focused her work in nursing not only on providing the highest quality care possible, but also on passionately teaching others about the benefits of hospice care,” said MHP Director of Home Health and Hospice Travis Johnson, who nominated Uphold for the award.

“Lisa does her job very well, while also taking time to advocate for what she cares most about. The care she provides is not just technical. It’s heart-touching, emotional and spiritual care,” Johnson continued. “Lisa takes the time to get to know the individual characteristics of each patient and of each family member she works with.”

Uphold said she loves the work she does and feels honored to be recognized. “There are so many other wonderful nurses who do great things every day,” Uphold stressed.

In the winter of 2017, Uphold was assigned to care for a patient who had a unique situation and had no electricity at home. Johnson applauded Uphold’s willingness to go above any beyond for the patient.

“Lisa worked tirelessly to track down new vendors who could help meet this patient’s unique needs,” Johnson explained. “Despite the many challenges, Lisa built a strong bond with the family and after the patient passed, they invited her to the visitation, dinner and funeral. Lisa was invited not just as a caregiver, but as part of the family.”

Sugarland Debut New ‘Bigger’ Track

Sugarland has shared another song off their upcoming album Bigger, and this time it’s the title track.

The song certainly portrays a positive message, focusing on rising above troubled times, with Jennifer Nettles singing in the chorus,  “Don’t give up / You’re more than enough / Believe me love / You’re gonna be bigger.”

The song is the second track released from the album, which is set to drop June 8, 2018.

  • ONE MORE THING! While most people would consider Sugarland’s Kristian Bush a pretty cool guy, his kids may not agree. Kristian says he was worried about how his daughter would deal with Sugarland’s return while she was at school and she basically didn’t care. “She’s like, ‘Dad, they don’t care. My friends don’t listen to you,’” he shares. Although things are different for his son, who says kids are now waving at him in the halls, telling dad, “I think my social collateral just went up.”

Bentley Tabbed as First Men’s Volleyball Coach in William Penn History

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – William Penn University Athletics Director Nik Rule announced on Friday that Luke Bentley has been hired as the school’s first-ever Head Men’s Volleyball Coach.

Bentley comes to WPU from fellow Heart of America Athletic Conference institution Clarke University where he served as an assistant men’s coach the past two seasons. While at Clarke, he guided the Pride to a 32-27 overall record (11-9 Heart). The team held a top-10 ranking in the NAIA in 2016-2017.

Bentley guided one player to All-America status, while three were first-team all-Heart selections. Five others received either second-team or honorable-mention recognition. One individual was also named Heart Attacker of the Year, while two garnered Defensive Player of the Year laurels.

“We are proud to have Luke Bentley as the first men’s volleyball coach at William Penn University,” Rule said. “He has invested a lot of time into understanding the college game in the NAIA and the Heart of America Athletic Conference as his vision developed for the impact he could make as a coach. As he shared the future of his vision and how he believed it could impact William Penn University, it became very clear that he was the perfect fit. We are excited about the future of this program under the leadership of Coach Bentley.”

Bentley was also the Head Girls’ Volleyball Coach at Maquoketa HS in 2017 and led two players to all-conference awards.

“I could not be more excited for the opportunity to lead the William Penn Men’s Volleyball program,” Bentley said. “It is a very exciting time in collegiate men’s volleyball and to have a University like William Penn recognize that and take advantage of it means there are some great things going on here. The entire athletic department, including Athletics Director Nik Rule, have been amazing since the beginning of this process. It shows what a special place William Penn really is.”

A 2013 graduate of Manchester University (Ind.) with a degree in K-12 Health and Physical Education, Bentley also earned his Master’s of Education degree (concentration in Athletic Administration) from Central Methodist University in 2016.

Bentley was a student coach for the women’s team at Manchester from 2009-2013 and a graduate assistant coach with the Central Methodist women from 2015-2016. During his tenure at CMU, the Eagles combined for a 62-16 record (36-6 in 2016), and he coached two first-team all-Heart performers in addition to three second-teamers and one all-region honoree. CMU posted a 3.67 Team Grade Point Average in 2016 which ranked third in the NAIA.

He will also bring experience at the high school level at Patagonia HS (Ariz.) from 2013-2015 as well as the club level with the Santa Fe Vipers (Mo.) from 2015-2016; both were with the girls’ teams.

Bentley has coached at numerous high school and collegiate camps, most notably at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan.

“The hiring process for this position was very competitive; we were very impressed with the depth of candidates who applied, from head coaches of other NAIA and NCAA D-II programs, to top assistants at all levels,” Rule said. “We were fortunate to have a group of finalists who were passionate about the sport and wanted to be a part of our family, and in the end Coach Bentley rose to the top as the right fit for WPU.”

Men’s volleyball is one of three new sports recently added to William Penn’s intercollegiate offerings. The program will play its first matches in the 2019-2020 school year with 2018-2019 serving as a recruiting season for Bentley. He will be expected to fill a varsity lineup in 2019-2020 and have both a varsity and JV squad by 2020-2021.

The NAIA currently does not sponsor men’s volleyball as a championship sport. It is in invitational status (eight-team national tournament next week) with 34 schools offering it, including six in the Heart (Clarke, Culver-Stockton, Graceland, Grand View, Missouri Valley, and Mount Mercy). Due to ample participation, the Heart does offer a conference championship. The NAIA plans to have 40 teams to reach championship status.

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa was recently named one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States, according to The Chartis Center for Rural Health.

“This achievement is very gratifying and validates our daily commitment to providing the best healthcare possible to our community, while maintaining an efficient and effective facility,” said MHP CEO Kevin DeRonde.

“Mahaska Health Partnership physicians and staff are dedicated to being a trusted community health partner and we are truly honored for this national recognition. Being recognized by the healthcare industry’s most comprehensive rating of US hospitals speaks to our team members’ ongoing commitment to our patients and the communities we serve.”

MHP joins 13 other Iowa hospitals on the list which are located in Atlantic, Audubon, Cherokee, Decatur, Estherville, Guthrie Center, Harlan, Le Mars, Missouri Valley, Orange City, Osage, Sac City, and Winterset. According to Becker’s Hospital Review, the hospitals included in the list are top performers in managing risk, achieving higher quality, securing better outcomes, increasing patient satisfaction and operating at a lower cost than their peers.

MHP scored in the top 100 for Critical Access Hospitals on iVantage Health Analytics’ Hospital Strength INDEX®. The INDEX, now in its eighth year, leverages 50 rural-relevant indicators across eight pillars to provide the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural provider performance. Results are the basis for many of rural healthcare’s most prominent awards, advocacy efforts and legislative initiatives.

“The Hospital Strength INDEX provides a true benchmark for helping rural providers to better understand performance levels and identify areas of improvement,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader of The Chartis Center for Rural Health. “When we look across the spectrum of rural-relevant INDEX indicators, the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals are establishing a new standard for how to deliver higher quality care to their communities despite an unpredictable healthcare environment.”

The Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals play a key role in providing a safety net to communities across America – and the INDEX measures these facilities across eight pillars of hospital strength: Inpatient Share Ranking, Outpatient Share Ranking, Cost, Charge, Quality, Outcomes, Patient Perspective and Financial Stability.
