Oskaloosa Girls’ Regular Season Comes To An End

The Oskaloosa Girls’ Soccer team ended their regular season with a hard fought 2-1 loss at 8th ranked Pella last night. Much of the first half was dominated by Pella’s offense as they had numerous shots on goal, however Osky goal keeper Sandra Blom stood her ground denying the Dutch over and over until late in the half when Pella was able to score twice taking a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The second half was a much different story however, as an inspired Osky team came out fighting and never gave in holding the 8th ranked Dutch scoreless while creating several of their own scoring opportunities. Only one found the back of the net however when Ashley Brockman had a charge toward goal then passed the ball off at the last second to Kinsey Cook who scored the lone goal with Brockman getting the assist. Blom was credited with 12 saves.

Oskaloosa Coach Greg Walter said he was very proud of how the girls didnt fold up at halftime and just play defense but instead chose to give Pella a fight and played well as a team in the second half.

Oskaloosa ends the regular season at 7-7 and is now off until the opening round of the Class 2A Regional Tournament on Friday May 29th when they will host Ottumwa at 6pm. Oskaloosa beat Ottumwa 6-0 earlier this season.

You can hear live coverage of that game on AM 740/ 99.5 FM KMZN and kboeradio.com with Jamie Brockman and Jeff Reif. The winner will move on to face Pella in the semifinals.

Wiliam Penn’s Yang Named Honorable-Mention All-American

Maggie Yang (Sr., Chino, Calif., Biology) concluded undeniably the best career in William Penn women’s golf history as the NAIA Women’s Golf All-America Teams were announced Monday.

Yang was named to the Honorable Mention squad as a total of 45 players were honored (15 each on the first, second, and honorable-mention groups). It is the second All-America accolade earned by the program as Demi Coertze (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Digital Communication) was a Third-Team pick last year.

“I am happy to end my last season on a successful note,” Yang said. “We have been working hard all year and it has paid off. I am very proud of all the girls and we could not have done this without the support from our coaching staff, family, and friends. The program has come a long way and I am looking forward to what the future has in store for us!”

The Midwest Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Year, the senior guided the Statesmen to their second-straight league title as well as second-consecutive NAIA National Championships appearance.

Yang was not only her team’s best player at a 77.6 stroke average, but also the most consistent; she posted 19 rounds (out of 25) in the 70s (low of 71). The senior tallied three tournament titles, had a total of 10 top-10 finishes, and tied for 33rd at NAIA Nationals.

“Maggie had a phenomenal career here at William Penn,” Head Coach Nik Rule said. “I cannot think of a better way for it to end than being recognized as one of the best players in the country; it is well deserved. She took a chance four years ago and we shared a dream of making this program one of the best in the country. Today, that dream has become a reality and she deserves some of the credit for that. She will forever be a Statesmen.”

Brandon Miller, Head Coach of national champion Northwood (Fla.), was named NAIA Coach of the Year.

Reoccurring Items the Theme at Oskaloosa City Council Meeting

The Oskaloosa City Council met for its regularly scheduled meeting Monday night at the Council Chambers in City Hall, and multiple reoccurring items were the theme.

There was a study session that began an hour before the meeting for Rohrback Associates to give the council a presentation on the new fire station addition and renovation. The presentation was complete with a model, a powerpoint with computer generated pictures of the interior and exterior, and a timeline for the project. The architects said there were no major changes since the last time they spoke with the council, but just wanted to give them an update. They hope to begin construction in the fall of this year, and hope to be completed with the entire project by August of 2016.

In the regular meeting, the council began by hearing public comments. RD Keep updated the council on the Oskaloosa Bark Park, which is now open in a limited capacity while the team finishes the construction and the addition of benches and other items around the park. Keep said he hopes for a full dedication to take place sometime in June.

The council also heard about the potential changes to the Downtown Farmer’s Market. The Market is moving to the square for both days, both Tuesdays and Saturdays, this year. The idea would be that it would be a more festive atmosphere, which would require a section of the west side of the square to be closed to traffic. There was no decision made regarding this topic at this time.

The council then jumped into the regular agenda, and unanimously approved the voluntary annexation of a few parcels of land by Carbonado Road, which will allow the city to get a grant to help repair a bridge and the road. The parcels are on the northeast side of town.

The next item involved installing sidewalks down both sides of Highway 92 from Casey’s and Community First Credit Union down to Gateway Church of the Nazarene and Wal-Mart. The estimated cost is $912,650 for both sides. The council unanimously approved adding the two sidewalks to the 6.2 million dollar Walk, Run, Ride Oskaloosa initiative that was discussed a few meetings ago.

In other business, City Manager Michael Schrock told the council that Hardee’s has pulled back their interest to build a new property and reopen a restaurant in Oskaloosa, claiming it is not financially possible for them to support that particular store. Schrock then urged two items for the council to think about: acquiring the old Hardee’s building, and still acquiring a spot next to KFC for future vendors.

The council discussed this at length, and agreed it was a good idea to acquire the old Hardee’s building to address its appearance along the corridor of A Ave. in the busy section of Oskaloosa. The council also thought it was a smart idea to complete the talks with JC Penney, Penn Central Mall, and the other involved parties to acquire the same space of land just west of KFC to make it a green space for the time being until a new opportunity comes along. Both items will be addressed in full to make official decisions at the next council meeting.

Next, City Manager Schrock needed to have the council receive and file his project list for May 2015. This passed on a 6-1 vote, with Council Member Jason Van Zetten voting against, saying there were too many mixed up priorities and there needed to be adjustments to the active list.

In the reports following the agenda, Schrock also stated that there was a bid of $30,000 to acquire the vacant lot adjacent to the liquor store on A Ave. East, and the council should think about listening to future bids regarding that piece of land.

Finally, the council went into a closed session to review the performance of City Manager Michael Schrock and address his contract. After discussion, the council voted to raise Schrock’s pay to $125,000 per year and award him a $4,000 bonus.

The next meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council is scheduled for June 1 at 6 PM at City Hall in Oskaloosa.

Mahaska County Board Of Supervisors Meeting Discusses Country Life Health Care Facility Closure

Business regarding the closure of the Country Life Health Care facility was the headlining topic at Monday morning’s Mahaska County Board of Supervisors meeting.

The item on the agenda called for discussion of inventory disposal of the beds, dressers, and other living items that are housed in the facility. At the last Supervisors meeting in April, there was discussion regarding the idea that the Christian Opportunity Center could have some of the items as they work with placing three of the residents to help get them started.

According to Chair Mark Doland, the terminology of the motion is what will allow this to occur.

“We cannot gift property, but we can, as the board, make a legislative finding during an open meeting that there is a public purpose to be served by the property being in possession of the previous tenants, that is Country Life.”

The Board spoke with Julie Bak of the Christian Opportunity Center, and ironed out more details, including making a point to have a list of what items will be taken by each resident. Also, a coordinator placing three other Mahaska County residents asked if it was possible to have the same rules in place for the other residents that are not being placed by the COC. The Board decided unanimously that it was a good idea to open it up to all people being displaced in Mahaska County from the Country Life facility. This includes helping these residents with their first month’s rent at their new location.

Country Life is scheduled to close to residents by June 30, and will be officially closed for business at the end of September.

In other business, the Board went into an agreement with Marion County to get assistance from county attorney Ed Bull as Mahaska County looks to replace Amy Zenor at the same position. Supervisor Mike VanderMolen, who is also an attorney, set up the arrangement. Zenor has resigned to take an attorney position in her home county of Clay County. This passed on a 2-1 vote, with Vice Chair Willy VanWeelden opposing due to being left out of that decision making process to enter the agreement.
Other happenings in the meeting:

– The Board unanimously approved reviving the Courthouse Security Committee, which was formed but never met several years ago. This was done at the request of Mahaska County Sheriff’s Deputy Don DeKock.
– The Board unanimously approved setting July 6th as the date for a public hearing regarding setting up a committee to discuss the one-cent tax proposal.
– The Board passed a voluntary annexation in Oskaloosa by Carbonado Road, which was already city property.
– The Board heard an idea about the Farmer’s Market moving back to the square this year, proposing the road would be closed on the north half of the west side of the square to create a more festive atmosphere on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
– The Board heard from maintenance manager Troy Bemis regarding a raised crack in the sidewalk in front of the courthouse, which will be addressed soon for safety reasons.
– The Board discussed having a hazardous waste policy adjusted. Wapello County has not been allowing Mahaska County hazardous waste to be dumped, which was the prior agreement. VanderMolen believes Mahaska County should create their own policy, as they are one of only eight counties in Iowa without one.

The next scheduled meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors is June 1st in the third floor conference room at the Mahaska County Courthouse on the square in Oskaloosa.

Oskaloosa Girls’ Tennis Eliminated In Second Round Of Team Regionals

The Oskaloosa girls’ tennis team won their first round team regional on Saturday against Knoxville at Central College in Pella. This match-up was tight the entire way. The teams were knotted up 3-3 after singles. The match would go down to the wire at #1 doubles but our new doubles team of Brooke Caves and Macy Scharff stormed back from a set down and clinched the win at #3 doubles. This would set-up a rematch with Pella in the afternoon session and a chance to advance to the round of 16.

Unfortunately, Oskaloosa lost another heartbreaker to Pella 5-4. The Indians had several chances to win this match but it slipped away. The teams split the six singles matches 3-3 and then Osky dropped 2 of 3 doubles matches. Head Coach Josh Bandstra said the girls played hard and he was very proud of their effort.

Pella moves on to face Cedar Rapids Xavier in Iowa City this Saturday for a trip to the first round of the state tournament in Class 1A Region 4. Grinnell shutout Pella Christian to move onto the regional final against either Marion or Mount Vernon-Lisbon. That match was suspended due to weather on Saturday, and will be finished this afternoon.

The girls’ regional individual meets begin for tennis this Thursday for qualification to the state tournament next month.
