Local Softball Teams Looking To Punch Ticket to State Monday Night

While it has not been a kind postseason to several area softball teams this year, there are still a few of squads looking to punch their ticket to the state tournament this evening.
On the Mahaska Zone Network, you’ll hear the Sigourney softball team looking for an upset against the #2 team in Class 1A, New London. That game will take place in Ottumwa tonight at Huston Field, and the first pitch will be delivered at 7 PM. Our pregame on 104.9 FM KBOE and kboeradio.com will begin at 6:45, with Katelyn Buckalew and Emery Songer on the call. Sigourney enters the contest 26-11, but will need to play a very good game to knock off the 29-2 favorites from New London.
Also in Class 1A tonight, Region 6 will determine its representative at state, and Lynnville-Sully will be looking to get the job done to get back to Fort Dodge. The 34-3 Hawks had to walk-off in their last game to get to this point, but the 5-4 win was good enough against Martensdale-St. Marys on Friday. They will play Murray, who pulled an upset on Wayne in Corydon last week. Murray enters a sizeable underdog in terms of the bracket, but have a very impressive 27-4 record entering tonight’s game despite being unranked. That game takes place in Pleasantville at 7 PM tonight.
In Class 3A, Prairie City-Monroe is looking to get a big upset as well, as they’ll take on the #1 team in the state in Solon. That game is in Grinnell tonight at 7 PM as well.
Upsets have been the name of the game so far, especially in regards to our area teams, as top seeded Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Pella Christian, and Oskaloosa all fell in their regional brackets last week. They were far from the only teams in their classes to get knocked off prematurely, however.
In Class 4A, Saturday night was a rough one for favorites, as #2 Indianola was upset by Pella, 4-0, and #5 Carlisle was knocked off by Boone, 5-3. Throw in #4 Oskaloosa’s loss and the fact that #3 Winterset is facing #7 Norwalk tomorrow in their regional final, there will at most be only four of the top eight ranked teams in the state in Fort Dodge playing for a state title.
In Class 2A, #2 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and #6 Pella Christian both were beaten, so these results show that really anything can happen when this time of the year comes in all sports.
Police Plan To Ticket Motorist Who Crashed into Southern Iowa Stadium Building

Police say they plan to ticket a motorist who crashed into a southern Iowa stadium building.
The Ottumwa Courier reports that the driver went through a chain-link fence at Schafer Stadium in Ottumwa on Saturday and struck the facility’s newest building.
Ottumwa Police Sergeant Noah Aljets says the car was traveling between 35 and 40 miles per hour just before the crash. Aljets says the building wasn’t seriously damaged.
Aljets says it isn’t clear why the driver kept going straight into the fence instead of turning into a nearby parking lot.
The driver, who wasn’t identified, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
Mahaska Little League Boys on to State

The Mahaska American 9 & 10 year old All-Star team wrapped up the District 4 championship last week and will advance to the State championship July 25 – August 1 in Davenport. The team ended up with an 8-0 record in district play.
On Monday, the 6th, they travelled to Lynnville-Sully and won 20-2. Lynnville-Sully’s pitchers struggled, giving up 18 walks in the game. American had five hits in the game, paced by Trey Miller’s single and double. Kamden Criss and Braxton George also had doubles and Luke Fynaardt had a single to round out the attack. Braxton George pitched 3 innings of no-hit ball to pick up the win. He had no walks and struck out two. Cael Butler gave up one hit in one inning of work to close out the game.
After a bye on Tuesday, the team travelled to Newton. The game would end up being played as the championship game, as neither team had lost in pool play and no other teams could catch the winner. The game was a classic pitcher’s duel between American’s Braxton George and Newton’s Turner
Williams. The two teams traded runs in the first, with American’s run coming via Logan Hoskinson scoring on a wild pitch. Newton struck next in the top of the 4th, scoring a run on a walk followed by a two out single from Luke Thomason. The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the 5th, when American finally broke into the scoring column again. With one out, Kamden Criss drew a walk.
After a foul out to the catcher, Logan Hoskinson drew another walk. With Williams reaching his pitch limit, Brody Bauer was brought in to pitch to Braxton George. George flared a single just out of the reach of the shortstop to bring home both runners for a 3-2 lead. Logan Hoskinson came in a got the final three outs for the save.
George pitched 5 innings, giving up 5 hits and two walks while striking out 4. His two run base hit ended up being the only hit for American, to go along with 6 walks.

IMCA Harris Clash is July 16 at Knoxville

Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods return to Knoxville Raceway for the 24th annual Harris Clash next Thursday, July 16.
Top prize for the Modifieds is $2,000 while Northern SportMods run for $1,000 to win.
Twenty-four cars will qualify for the Modified feature, which doubles as a Hawkeye Dirt Tour event; one past champion’s provisional will be given to the most recent winner who is licensed and competing in weekly IMCA events but who does not qualify.
IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, home region, Allstar Performance State and Hawkeye Dirt Tour points will be awarded for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier.
The Modified feature will be 25 laps and pay a minimum of $250 to start. The Northern SportMod feature is 20 laps.
Pit gates open at 3 p.m., the draw closes and the drivers’ meeting starts at 6 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7:15 p.m. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $8 for students, $4 for kids ages 6-12 and free for children five and under. Pit passes are $30.
Anyone between the ages of 12 and 17 must have a waiver, signed by a parent or guardian, to get into the pit area. That waiver form can be downloaded from the Knoxville Raceway website and must be printed in color. The person the waiver is intended for must be present at time of sign-in.

Oskaloosa Fire Dept. Respond To Fire On C Ave West

The Oskaloosa Fire Dept. responded to a house fire in the 500 block of C Ave West late Saturday night. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Fire Chief Mark Neff says no injuries occurred.

I-80 Speedway’s Silver Dollar Nationals set for July 17-18

The biggest auto race of the year in the State of Nebraska is coming to I-80 Speedway near Greenwood next Friday and Saturday, July 17-18. The best dirt late model and modified drivers in the country will be on hand racing for a purse of over $185,000. The event attracts fans from across American and beyond.
The event is a crown jewel event of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series which will be co-sanctioning the late model portion with the Lucas Oil MLRA. The modified portion of the program is sanctioned by the United States Model Touring Series (USMTS).
Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, has won both USMTS features in each of the last two years to dominate the Silver Dollar Nationals action. Terry Phillips and Jason Hughes won in 2012 while Kelly Shryock and Jeremy Payne were the winners during the inaugural event in 2011.
Action gets underway on Thursday night with open practice for the Lucas Oil Late Models and the USMTS Modifieds as well as a complete racing program for the MalvernBank.com SLMR Super Late Models, Nebraska 360 Sprints and B-Mods.
Friday’s action concludes with a new event featuring a race with three six-lap segments and on Saturday night the non-qualifiers will be racing in the Belt Bash for $3,000 to win and $300 to start.
The two-night affair will be the final two events in the MSD Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports. Sanders is the current points leader with Cade Dillard, Grant Junghans, Ryan Gustin and Jesse Sobbing completing the top five.

In 2013, three days after being admitted in the hospital for viral cardiomyopathy after a viral upper respiratory infection, Randy Travis underwent emergency brain surgery after suffering a stroke at the Heart Hospital at Baylor Plano in Texas. Since then, Randy has slowly been recovering and is relearning how to write and play the guitar, according to his wife Mary Davis.

Sanders in driver’s seat to become USMTS $100,000 man

After a grueling Southern Speedweek to open the month of June, the drivers and crews of the USMTS are currently on a two-week vacation or testing their meddle elsewhere before roaring back full force for the final half of the 2015 campaign next Friday and Saturday, July 17-18, at the 5th Annual Silver Dollar Nationals at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.
Earlier this year, United States Modified Touring Series officials announced a record-shattering points fund with a possible $150,000 payout to the 2015 USMTS National Champion.
“This is something we have wanted to do for some time now, but you have to have the support from drivers, fans and sponsors to make it work,” said USMTS President Todd Staley. “Not only are the drivers who compete in the USMTS the best of the best, but this is proof that our fans and marketing partners are the best of the best too.”
If any driver could to secure all four regional championships and the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental, he or she would collect the coveted $110,000 bonus to make the total take as much as $150,000.
That dangling carrot was pulled away two weeks ago when Rodney Sanders clinched the Double H Bands Southern Region points title. With USMTS Rookie of the Year contender Austin Arneson capturing the MVT Gulf Coast Border Region back in early March, it meant the four-region sweep was no longer possible.
What Sanders did, however, was solidify himself as the lone man in line for a possible $100,000 payoff if he can stay near-perfect through the end of September.
Winning three regional championships plus ‘The Hunt’ will net a driver $35,000 plus a $65,000 bonus for a total payday of $100,000. Beyond that, two regional triumphs and the USMTS National Championship could earn somebody $30,000 plus a $20,000 bonus for $50,000 total.
With one regional crown already on his head, Sanders is in the driver’s seat in the two remaining regional battles. In the MSD Central Region, Sanders holds a 47-point lead over Cade Dillard with just two races remaining. Sanders has already mathematically clinched the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region with just one race remaining on Tuesday, July 21, at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Now all the 25-year-old from Happy, Texas, has to do is come out on top in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental and capture his third straight USMTS National Championship.
