Next stop Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, which will feature Sunday’s season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400, where NASCAR will crown its sixty-seventh Cup Series champion. Ford Championship Weekend will also feature season finales in both the X-FINITY and Camping World Truck Series. But the headliner is Sunday’s four-hundred-mile Chase wind-up, where The Championship Four – Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Junior – will vie for the title that goes to the highest-finishing driver among that group.

For Gordon, the weekend is sure to be an emotional ride. It’s his final season in the Sprint Cup Series and his final race before transitioning into the broadcast booth for FOX Sports.

Gordon entered the post-season Chase as the Number-13 seed in the sixteen-man field but has consistently worked his way through the last nine races – winning earlier this month at Martinsville Speedway to secure a berth in this weekend’s Championship Round.

Iowa Department Of Human Services Says More Than 17,200 Active Medicaid Providers

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say more than 12,000 Medicaid service providers have signed necessary paperwork to offer care under the state’s proposed privatization plan.
Governor Terry Branstad’s office said Thursday the four private companies scheduled to oversee Medicaid services on January 1st signed the contracts since November 1st.
The Iowa Department of Human Services says there are more than 17,200 active providers available to offer Medicaid services.
Senator Joe Bolkcom, a Democrat from Iowa City, said the figure shows low participation. He and other Democrats have been public about seeking a delay of the switch. They question the state’s preparedness, while Branstad and other state officials have said Iowa will be ready on time.
Iowa’s $4.2 billion Medicaid program provides care to low-income and needy people, including children and disabled individuals.

 

Oskaloosa 8th Grade Boys Open Season With A 47-14 Win

The Oskaloosa 8th Grade Boys traveled to Grinnell Tuesday night and came back with a split. Oskaloosa won the “A” game 47-14 and came up just short in the “B” game losing 33-28.

In the “A” game, Oskaloosa started slow and then was able to build a 21-10 halftime lead. The Indians came out in the second half with a little more fire and turned numerous Grinnell turnovers into points. Oskaloosa played a full-court trapping man defense which helped put the game out of reach early I the second half. Tyler Miller led the way with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 8 steals. Reese Sarver scored 9 points with Noah VanVeldhuizen next at 8 points and 8 rebounds. Xavier Foster and Iszak Schultz each scored 7. Foster pulled down 5 rebounds and Schultz pulled down 4 rebounds and 5steals. Colton Butler and Walker Newman rounded out scoring with 2 points each. The Indians committed 17 turnovers and will need to improve on that when they meet Pella on Monday, November 23rd.

Oskaloosa dropped a close 33-28 decision in the “B” game. Sullivan Tighe led the scoring with 10 points while Dalton Deney was next with 6 points. Collin Bambrook chipped in 4 points and Austin Adams, Andrew Scholes, Kaden Bambrook, and Owen Gordon each scored 2 points. Treyton Schilling was the leading rebounder with 4.

William Penn Victorious In League And Road Opener

Marshall, Mo.–Three players eclipsed the 20-point mark and the Statesmen men’s basketball team survived both its first road test and first battle in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with a 92-83 win over Missouri Valley Wednesday.

William Penn (5-1, 1-0 Heart), which has won five games in a row, defeated the defending Heart Tournament champions with superior shooting (47.7{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}-46.8{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}) and rebounding (41-33).  To claim the victory, the team was forced to overcome serious foul trouble (four starters and a reserve player finished with at least four fouls) and also the absence of key player Steven Roundtree (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla., Physical Education) (coaches decision).

The Vikings (1-2, 0-1 Heart) led by a 6-2 tally 4:04 into a slow-moving contest, but the navy and gold opened it up with a 16-6 run.  MVC rallied right back to lead 22-21 only to see the visitors reel off 14 of the next 16 points.  WPU’s margin was trimmed to four at halftime, 48-44.

The home squad continued to chip away, eventually claiming a trio of one-point leads early in the second stanza.  Fortunately, another pro-WPU stretch followed as a 57-57 tie with 16:13 to go turned into a 69-60 Statesmen advantage with 12:22 still on the clock.

William Penn’s lead ballooned to as big as 14 points before a mini 7-0 Viking run in the final minutes brought them within five with 30 seconds left.  The Statesmen, who finished 19-for-26 at the charity stripe, put the proverbial cherry on top with four successful free tries at the end.

Antonio Levy (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) owned sharpshooter status Wednesday, pacing WPU with 23 points by going 8-for-12 from the field (5-for-8 3-PT).

He was joined in the 20-point crew by Brady Burford (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) and Dondre Alexander (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Physical Education), both of whom recorded double-doubles.  Burford finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks, while Alexander posted 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Charles Knowles (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) added seven points off the bench and Josh Caldwell (Sr., Denver, Colo., Physical Education) contributed six more. Jake Guenther (Sr., Altoona, Iowa, Secondary Education) scored five points in only three minutes of action as well.

Capitalizing on its foe’s mistakes also steered the Statesmen to the ‘W’.  WPU had 14 turnovers, but forced MVC into 16 turnovers which were converted in 22 points.

“This was the best we have played all year,” Head Coach John Henry said.  “This is a tough place to win; they had a loud and intense crowd.  We kept our composure and made plays all night.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host Avila in Heart action at 4 p.m.

Keith Urban Exhibit Opens Tomorrow At Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum

The exhibit showcasing Keith Urban’s life and path to Nashville is set to open at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum tomorrow. The “Keith Urban So Far…” exhibit will run through May of 2016 and will represent Urban’s life and career with historic and priceless memorabilia from his own collection.

Top Two K&N West Teams Penalized After Phoenix Weekend

The first- and second-place teams in last week’s season-ending Casino Arizona 100 NASCAR K-and-N Pro Series West race at Phoenix International Raceway have been penalized. During post-race inspection on November 12th, it was discovered that the cover on the oil reservoir on Todd Gilliland’s race-winning Toyota was not properly bolted shut.

Gilliland and car owner Bill McAnally were each docked thirty championship points. Crew chief Seth Smith was fined thirty-five thousand dollars, suspended for three races and placed on probation for six months.

Also during post-race inspection, a shock absorber on William Byron’s second-place Chevrolet didn’t extend six inches in the allowable time span of ninety seconds. Byron and car owner Justin Marks were each docked twelve championship points.

WPU Program Partners With KYOU

OSKALOOSA—William Penn University’s Digital Communication program has teamed up with KYOU Fox-15 in Ottumwa to develop a two-year partnership. This partnership will allow students to gain hands-on experience with producing a nightly news broadcast.

In November 2014, the general manager of KYOU visited the WPU campus and watched the Communication Research Institute (CRI) produce its newscast with a student crew. After several meetings between WPU Administration and KYOU executives, a partnership was established in July 2015.

KYOU has employed seven WPU students to assist in producing nightly news programs and has begun practicing for these broadcasts in the newly upgraded studio in the Musco Technology Center (MTC) on the Oskaloosa campus. According to Digital Communication Program Director Matt Wagner, this experience for students is unique to other colleges and programs in Iowa.

“This partnership is a demonstration of the strength and value of  Penn’s Digital Communication program under the direction of Matt Wagner,” states John Ottosson, President of William Penn University. “While we believe this is a valuable service for the citizens of Ottumwa and southeastern Iowa, from an educational perspective it is invaluable to our students. This is a unique opportunity to allow our students to work for and be part of a professional team through KYOU and will strengthen their resume as they move forward in their careers.”

KYOU and William Penn University hope to launch their partnership and productions later this fall. KYOU news can be viewed on Channel 17 in Ottumwa.

Cheverolet Wins Another Manufacturers’ Championship

Dale Earnhardt Junior’s victory in last weekend’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Raceway clinched the 2015 Sprint Cup Series manufacturers’ title for Chevrolet – its thirteenth straight and thirty-ninth overall. Chevy drivers have rolled up fifteen wins this season – including three by Earnhardt – and built an insurmountable sixty-nine-point lead entering the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Toyota has also clinched the manufacturers’ title in the Camping World Truck Series. It’s a tight race in the X-FINITY Series with just five points separating first-place Ford from second-place Chevrolet. Toyota is third, twenty points off the pace heading into Saturday’s season-ending Ford EcoBoost 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Ice & Snow… Take It Slow

OSKALOOSA, IOWA – Winter weather will happen – ready or not – and it’s never too early to remind everyone “Ice and Snow…..Take it Slow.”
The Oskaloosa Police Department reminds citizens when winter weather conditions become severe with freezing rain, sleet, ice or snow fall which cause difficult travel conditions, the City Manager has the authority to declare a snow emergency within the city. The announcement will be made through the City’s website at www.oskaloosaiowa.org and local media outlets and will give the date and time the snow emergency begins. Citizens can also sign up to receive e-mail or text alerts when a snow emergency has been declared. Go to the city’s web page and located on the lower left-hand side of the front page is a “Notify Me” button. Fill out the necessary information and a e-mail/text alert will be sent when a snow emergency has been declared.
When a snow emergency is declared, no on-street parking is allowed. If you leave your vehicle parked on city streets during a snow emergency, you may receive a $25 parking ticket and/or your vehicle could be towed at your expense. Citizens who do not have off-street parking available to them may park their vehicle(s) in the city parking lots within the central business district. Once the street is plowed you should remove your vehicle from the city parking lot so the street department can plow the lots. On-street parking is allowed again only after the full width of the street has been plowed, or the snow emergency has been cancelled.
The City of Oskaloosa has prepared a brochure for residents which is available on the City website and through City Hall – 220 South Market Street, Public Works – 804 South D Street, or at the Mahaska County Law Center – 214 High Avenue East. The brochure contains frequently asked questions along with important information for citizens. Remember when a snow emergency is declared, no on-street parking is allowed until the full width of the street has been plowed or the snow emergency is cancelled.
Eventually, winter weather will arrive, prepare now and remember “Ice and Snow….Take it Slow”.
