Carrie Underwood’s Greatest Hits: Decade #1 Certified Platinum

Carrie Underwood has earned a Platinum Certification for her first compilation record, Greatest Hits: Decade #1. What makes this accomplishment even more exciting is the fact that Underwood is the only country artist – and one of only six all-genre artists- to release a platinum album since the release of her Greatest Hits: Decade #1 record in December of 2014.

7th Grade Girls Pick Up Win Over Carlisle

The 7th grade girl’s teams returned to the court last night against Carlisle.
The A team picked up where they left off from Monday and continued to play hard and attack for the whole game to earn their first winning streak of the season! The girls played tough defense and becoming more confident with their post moves, which are things that we are focusing on in practice.  Maddie Haines led the way with 11 points. MaKenna Schaffner had 7 points. Emily Simon and Jillian Jennings added 6 and 5 points each. Kaylee Johnson and Lindy Slocum rounded out the scoring with 2 points a piece. The A team is now 4-5.
The B and C teams both worked hard but came up on the losing end of close games. These girls are continuing to improve their skills with each practice and we are able to see that in the games. They have become better in all the areas of the game, which we try to work on every day. The B team was led by Lindy Slocum with 6 points. Abby Braundmeier added 3 points. Paiven Knoot, Haley Iseton, and Abigail Vroegh rounded out the scoring with 2 points. The C team was led by Paiven Knoot with 4 points. MaKayla Covey added 4 and Keke Lawrence had 2. The B team is now 1-6 and the C team is 1-5.
The girls will be return to the court on January 21st when we travel to Newton.

Oskaloosa Falls To DCG In A Busy Thursday For Wrestling

Oskaloosa fell to Dallas Center Grimes, 59-18, in the Indians first home meet of the season.  Osky was wrestling without Jason Beebe, who is out with a skin infection. They were also without Kyler Salazar, who is nursing a foot injury, and Andy Bonilla. That forced the Indians to forfeit eight of the 14 weight classes handing the Mustangs 36 points. Osky did win three of the six contested matches as Josh Diehl at 120, Drew Sams at 138, and Callan Tomlin at heavyweight all won by fall. Osky travels to the Ankeny tournament on Saturday.

In other area wrestling results from last night Sigourney/Keota rolled to three wins beating Belle Plaine (63-9), HLV (63-10) and Lone Tree (66-18). Lynnville-Sully beat BGM (58-12) and edged Iowa Valley (37-36). Knoxville beat Centerville (54-15) and Davis County (48-24). Davis County edged Clarke, 34-33. PCM beat C-M-B, 48-32, but lost a close one to Saydel, 33-32. Norwalk beat Grinnell, 56-24. Ottumwa beat Des Moines Lincoln, 39-33. Pleasantville beat Wayne (45-18) and lost to SE Warren (45-26). Moravia beat Nodaway Valley, 38-12, but fell to Bedford/Lenox (54-15) and I-35 (60-12). Fort Madison beat Fairfield, 54-22. Washington beat Mt Pleasant (48-11) and New London (62-12).

Iowa Posts Record Corn, Soybean Crops

DES MOINES (AP) — It is a record year for Iowa and Nebraska crop farmers.

The final harvest report released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture says Iowa farmers brought in 2.5  billion bushels of corn, 4 percent higher than the 2009 record. Iowa has led the nation in corn production for 22 consecutive years. The average per-acre yield of 192 bushels also is a new record.

Soybean farmers did very well too, producing a record crop and the nation’s largest soybean bounty, beating out Illinois for the first time since 2012. At 554 million bushels, this year’s Iowa soybean harvest  exceeds the 2005 record by 5 percent. The per-acre yield also beat the 2005 record.

Nebraska also produced records with 1.69 billion bushels of corn and a 306 million bushel of soybeans.

Willie Nelson Is Dropping A George And Ira Gershwin Tribute Album

When Willie Nelson was presented with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for popular song during a ceremony in Washington D.C. last November, he revealed that he was working on a tribute album for George and Ira Gershwin. The album will be titled Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin, and it will hit store shelves on February 26th.

Loss Only Drops Navy And Gold One Position

Oskaloosa–Its lengthy win streak was snapped last week, but fortunately the loss did not provide much punishment to the Statesmen men’s basketball team as the NAIA released its third Division I rating Tuesday.

William Penn (14-2, 7-1 Heart) went 1-1 last week and only fell to #6 with 184 points.  Avila (Mo.) joins WPU in the top 25 at #23, while Central Methodist (Mo.) and Benedictine (Kan.) are receiving votes at #27 and #28 unofficially.

Pikeville (Ky.) regains the #1 slot with 217 points and six first-place votes as former #1 and new #2 Georgetown (Ky.) (one first-place vote) lost; there are now no undefeated programs left in NAIA Division I.  Columbia (Mo.), with the last two first-place nods, is tied for second, while LSU Alexandria and Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) round out the top five.

William Penn is home Thursday to host Central Methodist in Heart action at 7:30 p.m.

Statesmen Tear Through Under-Manned Yellowjackets

Lamoni–The William Penn wrestling team took advantage of a trio of forfeits as it defeated Graceland 40-9 in dual-meet action Tuesday.

WPU (2-1) sprinted to a 6-0 edge as John Altieri (Fr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) pinned Juan Dominguez in 3:57 at 125 pounds.

Jeremy Andujar (So., Tampa, Fla., Biology) added to his team’s edge at 133 pounds with a 5-2 victory against Khamin Crow.  The 141-pound match went to Graceland (1-4), but 149-pounder Kionte Crocker (So., Brandon, Fla., Industrial Technology) started a run of six-straight wins for the visitors as he won by fall over Brandon Seward in a time of 1:35.

Christian Padilla (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Secondary Education) pounded Dakota Britt in a 15-3 major decision at 157 pounds and then Johnny Hopper(So., Basehor, Kan., Psychology), Tyler Foubert (Fr., Gibson, Iowa, Business Management), and Cody Jones (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) all received forfeits at 165, 174, and 184 pounds.

197-pounder Chris Rodriguez (Fr., Tampa, Fla., Sociology) wrapped up the Statesmen scoring with an 8-5 overtime triumph versus Deon Williams.

Iowa Justice: Judicial System Is Tackling Racial Disparity

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court says the state is making progress in addressing racial disparity in its criminal justice system.
Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady says more than 700 judges, magistrates and other judicial branch staffers received training last year that helps them recognize implicit biases that may contribute to racial disparity. He says three Iowa counties are working on pilot projects that try to eliminate racial disparity in the juvenile justice system.
Cady spoke to the Iowa General Assembly on Wednesday during the annual Condition of the Judiciary address.
The Judicial Branch is seeking more than $190 million in funding for the fiscal year that begins in July, a 4 percent increase. Gov. Terry Branstad recommended that request in his budget proposal released Tuesday.
