GOLIAD, Texas (Feb. 11) — The long-awaited, much-anticipated season-opening event for the United States Modified Touring Series kicks off Thursday night at the Shady Oaks Speedway and RacinDirt.com will be there to bring the action into the living rooms of those who can’t be there.
The USMTS Casey’s Cup Series powered by S&S Fishing & Rental will open its 18th season at the 1/3-mile high-banked dirt oval in Goliad, Texas, for the first of four straight tripleheader weekend affairs for USMTS Winter Speedweeks 2016.
With bright sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s and upper 70s forecasted for all three days, fans are sure to see some incredible action once again from Shady Oaks Speedway.
Racing action will kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. USMTS Modifieds will be racing for $2,000 to win and Limited Mods paying $400 to win. Grandstand prices are $15 for ages 13 and up with kids 12 and under free and pit passes will be $35.
Friday night racing starts at 7:30 p.m. with USMTS Modifieds racing for $3,000 to win, Limited Mods going for $500 to win and Mod Lites racing for $300 to win. Grandstands are $20 for 13 and older with 12 and under free and pit passes $40.
On Saturday, the first heat race takes the green flag at 6 p.m. with USMTS Modifieds paying $4,000 to win, Limited Mods paying $650 to win, Mod Lites $400 to win and $400 to win for the Pure Stocks. Grandstand tickets are $20 for 13 and older with 12 and under free and pit passes $40.
When the dust had settled one year ago, it was Steve Whiteaker Jr., Dereck Ramirez and Ryan Gustin claiming the first three checkered flags of the season. USMTS Winter Speedweeks resumes at the Heart O’ Texas Speedway near Waco, Texas, Feb. 18-20. From there, it’s on to the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., Feb. 25-27, and then wraps up at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., March 3-5.
Each show will pay $2,000, $3,000 and $4,000 to win, respectively, and will comprise the first dozen events in the expanded 17-race USMTS Production Jars Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports.

Vickers For Stewart?

The Associated Press is reporting that Brian Vickers will soon be named to replace the injured Tony Stewart for upcoming events at Daytona International Speedway, including the season-opening Daytona 500 on February 21st. Stewart-Haas Racing would not confirm Wednesday’s report and has a press conference scheduled Friday morning. On January 31st, Stewart suffered a serious back injury in an all-terrain-vehicle accident while vacationing in California. He was driving dune buggies in a group with other NASCAR drivers and was injured as he reportedly landed hard after a jump.
Stewart is now recovering from surgery, which was performed February 3rd. There is no announced timetable for his return. Vickers made just two starts last season with Michael Waltrip Racing before being sidelined by a recurrence of blood clots and must be medically cleared by NASCAR before returning to competition.

KNOXVILLE, IOWA (February 10, 2016) – Next Thursday’s free and open-to-the-public forum at the National Sprint Car Museum is entitled “Sprint Car 101: Remembering Cheryl Glass, Rajo Jack & Charlie Wiggins.” The program, to be hosted by former educator Laci White and historian Larry Ball, Jr., will start at 7 p.m. on the museum’s second floor. It will conclude with the screening of Todd Gould’s documentary “For Gold & Glory.”
Laci White said today, “I can’t thank Tom Toutz enough for planting the seed with us to present this type of program during Black History Month. I also want to thank photographer John Mahoney for providing us with some photos of the late Cheryl Glass, and attorney Larry Ball, Jr., for making the presentation on both Charlie Wiggins and Rajo Jack. Finally, I want to thank Clayton Taylor at WFYI Public Media in Indianapolis for allowing us to screen Todd Gould’s award-winning film. This is going to be a fun night where we celebrate the lives of three black sprint car racers.”

Ottumwa Police Introducing Automated Speed Enforcement

The Ottumwa Police Department is introducing automated speed enforcement to the streets of Ottumwa. Ottumwa is using the new technology as a tool to enforce posted speed limits with the goal of reducing the amount of speeding violations and increasing the safety of the community.
The City of Ottumwa has partnered with RedSpeed™ USA Corp. of Lombard, Illinois to equip the Police Department with a mobile enforcement vehicle equipped with speed monitoring cameras. The vehicle uses radar to measure the speed of every vehicle that passes the camera within the enforcement zone. If a passing vehicle exceeds the speed limit, the equipment photographs and documents the violation. After the violation is reviewed and approved by an Ottumwa Police Officer, a citation, including the violation photos and the vehicle’s speed, will be sent to the registered owner.
Ottumwa Police Chief Tom McAndrew said, “Speeding is one of the issues we hear about often. I believe this equipment will help deter dangerous driving behavior. RedSpeed provides the vehicle and equipment at no cost to the local taxpayers.”
The Ottumwa Police Department will be training with the equipment and testing the system for the next 30 days. During this time, the vehicle will be parked at various locations around town monitoring traffic speed. No citations will be issued during this time, only warnings.
The locations for enforcement and additional information about the program will be posted on the City of Ottumwa website at cityofottumwa.com.

Statesmen Dip Two Spots To #9

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s basketball team has taken some hits over the last few weeks, but is still a top-10 team as the NAIA released its seventh Division I rating Tuesday.
The Statesmen (19-5, 12-4 Heart), who have split their last six games, dropped into a tie for #9 with Biola (Calif.) at 182 points. Fellow Heart foe MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) improves to #17, while Peru State (Neb.) falls one slot to #18. Avila (Mo.) is again in the receiving votes section, unofficially 31st in the NAIA.
LSU Alexandria remains #1 with 250 points and nine first-place votes. Georgetown (Ky.), Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) (last first-place vote), Pikeville (Ky.), and Columbia (Mo.) round out the top five.
William Penn is home Wednesday, hosting Culver-Stockton (Mo.) in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 7:30 p.m.
