OSKALOOSA, IOWA — Seven Oskaloosa High School students from the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) made an impressive inaugural appearance at the recent State Conference, marking a significant milestone for the school’s new business extracurricular program.
Students representing OHS were Emma Adams, Cam Cassens, Kara Harman, Maci Huebschen, Isabelly “Izzy” Modesto, Raya Probst, and Taylor Six. The event, which gathered chapters from across the state, showcased the dedication and talent of Oskaloosa High School’s FBLA members. “We competed, and we put our name out there as a new chapter,” remarked Cam Cassens, a senior and FBLA advisor at Oskaloosa High School. “It was a privilege for our chapter to attend this conference and participate in various competitions at the state level.”
Kara Harman, a sophomore and another advisor of the FBLA chapter, highlighted the significance of the event. “Not every chapter could attend due to funding and logistical constraints. However, we were determined to make our presence known, and we did just that,” said Harman.
Despite being in its first year, the Oskaloosa High School FBLA chapter showcased exceptional performance at the State Conference. “We had one member who placed third in their event and several others who performed admirably, including myself,” stated Cassens. “Considering it’s our first year, we’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished.”
Oskaloosa’s success with individual achievements includes Raya Probst securing 10th place in Introduction to FBLA, Isabelly “Izzy” Modesto earning 3rd place in Marketing, Kara Harman placing 9th in Introduction to FBLA, and Emma Adams achieving 8th place in Job Interview.
Noteworthy achievements include Kara Harman’s campaign for District 5 vice president, during which she articulated her values and vision for the future of FBLA chapters. Her efforts were commendable and reflected her leadership qualities.
The success of the Oskaloosa High School FBLA chapter can be attributed to its proactive approach and commitment to learning about business. “We’ve focused on fundraising activities to simulate real-world business scenarios, competed in various events, and even established our own storefront to raise funds for the chapter,” explained Harman.
Looking ahead, the chapter aims to expand its influence and continue its impressive trajectory. “We want to get recognized at not just the state level, but potentially at a national level as well,” expressed Cassens. “We’re also working on initiatives to involve middle school students, ensuring a pipeline of talent for the future.”
“We are incredibly proud of our students’ accomplishments at the FBLA State Leadership Conference,” said Ms. Mouton, FBLA Adviser. “Their dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm exemplify the spirit of excellence we strive to cultivate in our students. In addition to competing, students also participated in valuable workshops, which provided them with opportunities to network and collaborate with FBLA chapters from across the state.
With over 20 members currently involved in the chapter, Oskaloosa High School FBLA continues to thrive. Plans for upcoming events include a Family Fun Night for Headstart and a community service project benefiting the local animal shelter.
In addition to the remarkable achievements of the Oskaloosa High School FBLA chapter at the recent State Conference, it’s important to acknowledge the new organization’s financial challenges.
“Investing in the future of our students is paramount, and financial constraints shouldn’t limit their access to valuable opportunities like FBLA conferences,” emphasized Mouton. “We’re determined to overcome these challenges by seeking sponsorship from local businesses. Together, we can ensure that every student who wants to participate has the chance to do so, regardless of financial barriers.”
