APPEALS PANEL RESCINDS JOHNSON PENALTY

Appeals Panel Rescinds Johnson Penalty

The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has rescinded the penalty that was assessed to Jimmie Johnson’s Number-48 Sprint Cup Series team last month after it had received written warnings from NASCAR after both Charlotte race weekends.T

he first warning stemmed from an issue with alteration of a side skirt on Johnson’s Chevrolet. The second warning followed an inspection violation. The penalty announced May 27th, was to be assigned the last choice in the selection of a pit stall for the following race at Dover. The three-member panel heard Johnson’s appeal on Tuesday.

In announcing the decision, NASCAR said there was a preponderance of evidence regarding the situation with the side skirt but that there was conflicting evidence supporting the inspection violation, which was what led to Johnson’s team getting a second straight warning. As a result, the panel rescinded the penalty, and Michael Waltrip Racing has swapped crew chiefs between its two Sprint Cup Series teams. Brian Pattie will now be working with driver David Ragan on the Number-55 Toyota with Billy Scott taking Pattie’s place on the “15” entry to work with Clint Bowyer.

With the second half of the regular season now underway, Bowyer and Ragan are seventeenth and twenty-third in the point standings, respectively, with a combined four top tens.
