ALBIA – An Albia man who was accused of placing a hidden camera in a salon and watching people using a tanning bed has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges.

The Albia Police Department announced in June that officers had arrested 49-year-old Kevin Zaputil after the discovery of a hidden camera inside Just Teasin’ Hair Salon. The camera was reportedly disguised as an electrical outlet and had been positioned to observe a part of the salon that included a tanning bed. Zaputil had been serving as the primary contractor for the space and authorities said he placed the camera in the salon at some point in 2023.

On June 23, Zaputil was charged with Stalking – Using Technological Device, a Class C Felony, as well as three counts of Invasion of Privacy, an Aggravated Misdemeanor. Court documents show that two additional counts of Invasion of Privacy were filed against him over a week later.

Court records also state that, when interviewed by law enforcement, Zaputil admitted to placing the camera and to seeing multiple people, including a minor, disrobe through the camera. He added that he deleted content from the camera on his phone, but that the content would still be viewable on a secondary phone. Zaputil also denied sharing any videos recorded by the camera.

Last week, Zaputil pleaded not guilty to all charges. His jury trial date is scheduled for October 13.
