DES MOINES – The heat advisory for our area has been extended through tomorrow evening, and has even been upgraded to an extreme heat warning for some areas.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines previously issued the advisory for portions of central and south central Iowa, including Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Wapello, Appanoose, Davis, Poweshiek, and Jasper counties, through this evening; it will now be in effect through 7:00 PM tomorrow. 

The NWS in the Quad Cities this morning upgraded the advisory to an extreme heat warning for portions of southeast Iowa, including Keokuk, Jefferson, and Washington counties. That remains in effect until 7:00 PM on Friday.

For areas affected by the heat advisory, heat index values of up to 103 are expected. For areas impacted by the extreme heat warning, that number could go up to 105. 

Officials advise those in the impacted areas to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside: wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, and try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
