FAIRFIELD – A female juvenile has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 7-year-old Jean Grey Irvin in rural Jefferson County earlier this year.

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at approximately 7:56 PM. The Jefferson County Communications Center received a 911 call from a residence south of Libertyville in rural Jefferson County, reporting that a female juvenile had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Law enforcement and emergency medical personnel arrived on scene at 8:03 PM, and Irvin was subsequently transported to the Jefferson County Health Center, then by air ambulance to the University of Iowa hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

According to the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, information provided at the outset of the investigation suggested that the gunshot wound was unintentional, but law enforcement conducted further interviews and analysis of evidence gathered from the scene, and the results of that investigation “established probable cause to believe that [Irvin’s] death was neither accidental nor self-inflicted, and that her death appeared to be intentional.”

On Thursday, August 13, a female juvenile, who was 14 years old at the time of the shooting, was charged with 2nd Degree Murder.

The juvenile has been taken into custody, and because she is a minor, the matter will proceed in the first instance in juvenile court. The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office said that they are reviewing whether the specific facts of the case make it appropriate to seek waiver of juvenile court jurisdiction in order to prosecute the defendant as an adult in district court, and that that decision will be made “shortly.”
