NEWTON – A fire that broke out at a Newton apartment building on Sunday is currently under investigation.
According to the Newton Fire Department, crews responded to Somerfield Apartments on Sunday after receiving reports of smoke and flames coming from a closet and smoke filling the lower floor. They made entry upon arrival and quickly extinguished the fire.
A second alarm then brought mutual aid from the Colfax, Baxter, and Kellogg Fire Departments, as well as the Colfax Ambulance. After the fire was successfully suppressed, crews conducted overhaul and investigation of the scene.
The fire resulted in all residents of the complex being displaced for the night. Several will remain displaced until building repairs are completed.
Jasper County Emergency Management assisted on scene and coordinated with the American Red Cross to provide support for the displaced residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
