EXTREME HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT TODAY AND TOMORROW

Extreme Heat Warning In Effect Today and Tomorrow

DES MOINES – An extreme heat warning is in effect for our area through tomorrow.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines issued an extreme heat warning for most of central Iowa, which is in effect until 9pm tomorrow evening. The NWS in the Quad Cities likewise issued an extreme heat warning for southeast Iowa, which remains in effect until 10pm tomorrow evening.

Dangerously hot conditions are expected today and tomorrow, with heat index values above 100 expected, along with nighttime lows not falling below the mid to upper 70s. Extreme heat will persist through much of the week, potentially including the 4th of July weekend.

Officials encourage those in the area to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside: wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, and try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Do not leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
