Shryock Claims Hawkeye Dirt Tour First at Osky

The Southern Iowa Speedway hosted the Southern Iowa Fair Races sponsored by KBOE Radio and Mahaska Bottling Company. 92 Cars checked in including 32 Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA Modifieds.

Also the second class of the Southern Iowa Speedway Hall of Fame was inducted at intermission. This year’s class included Jim Brown, Dean Sylvester and Danny Wallace.

Feature Winners were Kelly Shryock (Hawkeye Dirt Tour), Daniel Hilsabeck (IMCA Stock Cars), Jason McDaniel (IMCA Northern SportMods), Dale Porter (IMCA Hobby Stocks) and Bill Whalen (IMCA Sport Compacts).

First feature of the night was the 18 lap Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature event and it was Daniel Hilsabeck grabbing the lead early from his outside front row starting spot. Hilsabeck knew there was a very intense battle for position behind him as Nathan Wood, Todd Reitzler, Mike Hughes, Cayden Carter, Zack Vanderbeek, Damon Murty and Derrick Agee all battled for 2nd on back. Hilsabeck maintained the lead with Wood in second when the only race caution came out on lap 15 for Trent Barker in turn one. Hilsabeck held on to take his second win at Osky. Hughes grabbed second away from Wood. Murty and Reitzler was fourth and fifth respectively.

Curtis VanDerWal and Frank Packer started on the front row of the 16 lap KBOE Radio IMCA Northern SportMods feature event. VanDerWal grabbed the early lead but just after the completion of lap one the caution came out when Jake McBirnie spun in turn one collecting a few others. On the restart, VanDerWal saw Packer, Cory Van Zante, Aaron Osweiler and Jason McDaniel right behind him by the end of lap two it was McDaniel in the race lead. McDaniel and the field saw the caution come out on lap ten when Frank Packer lost a driveshaft in turns three and four. McDaniel went on to take his 3rd win ahead of VanDerWal, Brayton Carter, Van Zante and Aaron Osweiler.

Because the possibility of rain moving in the 25 lap Hawkeye Dirt Tour for the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature event was moved up in the program. Ricky Thornton Jr, fresh off from winning the Dakota Classic Tour redrew the pole and took advantage early by taking the lead. Thornton’s time out front leading was short lived because Kelly Shryock grabbed the lead away on lap three just before the caution came out. Shryock continued to pave the way when the caution came out again on lap five for Zach Less, Jason Murray and Jimmy Gustin in turn four. Shryock saw Cayden Carter move into second on the restart. Shryock held on to take his first Hawkeye Dirt Tour win and became the fourth different tour winner at Osky in consecutive years. Strickler grabbed second away from Carter on lap 22. Carter finished third, Colt Mather was fourth and Hunter Marriott was fifth.

Dale Porter wrestled the lead away from Danny Thrasher in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature. Porter led from start-to-finish and held off several challenges from Thrasher to take his second win at Osky. Griffiths, Greene and Jared Stephens rounded out the top five.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts feature, originally scheduled for ten laps but mother nature had other plans for this feature. Trent Orwig led the first three laps before Bill Whalen took the lead away on lap four. As the field came to complete lap five the call was made to go checkered making it an official race with Bill Whalen picking win number four. Orwig, Shawn Havel, Larry Hopkins and John Girdley was second through fifth.
