Automakers recall 1.7 million cars with fatal airbags
Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler Vans, Mercedes and Ferrari are recalling about 1.7 million vehicles to replace potentially deadly air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. of Japan.
The inflators can hurl shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least 23 people have died from the problem worldwide and hundreds more were injured.
The moves, announced Friday by the U.S. government, are part of the largest series of automotive recalls in U.S. history. About 10 million inflators are being recalled in the U.S. this year, with as many as 70 million to be recalled by the time the whole mess ends late next year.
Ford, Honda, Toyota, and Fiat Chrysler already released their 2019 Takata recalls totaling more than 5 million vehicles.
Richland man pleads not guilty to shooting at a Sheriff’s Deputy
A man from Richland will go on trial in June for firing a shotgun at a Keokuk County Sheriff’s Deputy. 72-year-old Michael McClure has pleaded not guilty to assault on a peace officer with a firearm, going armed with intent and reckless use of a firearm. According to a criminal complaint, back on January 6, McClure called 911 to say there were several people in his yard. When Deputy Sheriff Jeff Runnells arrived and knocked on McClure’s door, a shotgun blast came from inside the house. Runnells says it missed him by about four feet. McClure is free on $5000 bond; his trial is scheduled to start June 18.

Oskaloosa basketball last night
Rian Yates made two free throws with 2-point-8 seconds to play to give Oskaloosa’s boys a 50-49 win at Pella Christian Thursday night (2/7). The Indians had trailed Pella Christian by ten points late in the second quarter before battling back in the second half. Yates had 23 points for Oskaloosa; Josh Van Gorp had 12 for Pella Christian. Oskaloosa’s now 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Saturday afternoon (2/9), the Indians host Norwalk; it will be Senior Day. The boys’ game tips off at 4:30 on Saturday.
Oskaloosa’s girls’ basketball team lost at Pella Christian 55-34 Thursday night. Marleigh Denburger had 11 points to lead Oskaloosa, while Emma Huisman had 16 for Pella Christian. Oskaloosa’s girls’ will host Norwalk on Saturday. Once again that is Senior Day. Brad Paisley Announces 2019 World Tour
Giddy up, Brad Paisley fans and get excited: the superstar has just announced a 2019 World Tour.
Kicking off May 30 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the tour will cross the country until Sept 22, and then cross the pond for dates in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and more.
Joining Paisley on the tour are rising stars Chris Lane and Riley Green. Lane’s star continues to rise, boasting Gold and Platinum level single certifications, two Top 10 albums and 850 million+ combined streams. Green burst onto the scene with his Dann Huff-produced EP In A Truck Right Now and now boasts over 71 million streams.

Born on this day in 1962 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was Garth Brooks, country singer, who had the 1991 US #1 album Ropin’ The Wind which spent 70 weeks on the US chart, and the 1994 UK #13 single “The Red Strokes.” Brooks is the biggest selling artist of the 90’s with over 60 million sales. According to the RIAAhe is the second best-selling solo albums artist in the United States of all time behind Elvis Presley (overall is third to the Beatles and Elvis Presley) with 128 million units sold.
Plan on a messy commute Thursday
Meteorologists say to plan on a slow commute Thursday morning. Expect reduced visibility and slick roads as precipitation falls during the morning commute. The morning wintry mix will wrap up by mid-afternoon across much of the area.
On top of a layer of sleet and ice, most areas will wind up around 1 to 3 inches of snow with a narrow axis of 3 to 6 inches possible mainly northeast of Waterloo. The winds will gust to 40 mph causing temperatures to fall. A wind chill advisory will be issued Thursday night into Friday morning. Wind chills could drop to the -20s. Friday and Saturday are on track to be quiet. Snow returns on Sunday.
Wisconsin officer shot during warrant over firearms, drugs
Milwaukee police say an officer shot and killed on the city’s south side was part of a unit that was conducting a search warrant on someone wanted for illegally selling firearms and drugs.
Officer Matthew Rittner was a tenured member of the department’s Tactical Enforcement Unit.
Sgt. Sheronda Grant said in a news release Wednesday night that Rittner and the other officers announced themselves as police and that the suspect fired several rounds. Grant said the 35-year-old Rittner was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital, where he died.
She said a 26-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested. It wasn’t clear Wednesday night whether he has been charged.
Rittner, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, began his career as a police aide in 2001.
One UTV recovered and one man arrested in Ottumwa
One down and one to go. The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an Ottumwa man in connection with the theft of a UTV over the weekend. 22-year-old Dallas Tapley was arrested Tuesday morning in connection with the theft of a UTV last Saturday from a home in rural Wapello County. The UTV was found Monday at a residence on Bluegrass Road in rural Wapello County. Tapley is charged with first degree theft, possession of meth, assaulting a police officer, interference with official acts and possession of drug paraphernalia. Tapley is in the Wapello County Jail on $30,000 cash bond.
Wapello County law enforcement is still looking for whoever stole another UTV late last week. Last Thursday, a Polaris High Lifter UTV was reported taken from a residence on 180th Avenue in rural Wapello County. It was found the next day in northern Davis County and has been returned to its owner.
