One person is dead after a two vehicle accident Thursday morning (2/14) in Keokuk County. The Iowa State Patrol says 49-year-old Matin McComas of Osceola was driving east on Highway 149 east of the Highway 21 intersection, when it crossed the center line and hit a pickup truck in the westbound lane driven by 27-year-old Alexander Rebling of Fairfield. McComas was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Rebling was not injured.

Area basketball playoff results

A heart-breaking end to Sigourney’s boys’ basketball season. In the Class 1A District 9 playoffs in Montezuma, The Savages rallied from a 12 point deficit Thursday (2/14) against Baxter to force overtime on a late three-pointer by Dustin Haines. Then in the final seconds of overtime, Sigourney led 52-49. Baxter’s Will Clapper scored to make it 52-51 and he was fouled on the play. Clapper missed the free throw, but Baxter’s Carter Nelsen scored with less than a second to play to give the Bolts a 53-52 victory. Dustin Haines had 22 points for Sigourney with teammate Spencer Magill adding 20. The Savages end the year 12-10.
Baxter goes on to play Montezuma in the Class 1A District 9 tournament. Montezuma routed Colo-Nesco 63-20 behind 19 points from Hunter Ray. Montezuma will host Baxter Tuesday night (2/19).
Also in 1A boys’ basketball: District 9: Lynnville-Sully over Collins-Maxwell 75-37, BGM over HLV 52-42. 1A District 8: Pekin defeated Holy Trinity 74-42. Pekin meets WACO Tuesday night. 1A District 11: North Mahaska defeated Twin Cedars 65-31; the Warhawks play Moravia Tuesday night in Ankeny.
Class 2A boys: District 9, EBF over Davis County 74-35 and Pella Christian downed Albia 84-41. EBF and Pella Christian face off for the District 9 title Tuesday night in Oskaloosa. 2A District 10: PCM defeated Chariton 47-39; PCM plays Van Meter for the District 10 title Tuesday night in Norwalk.
Regular season boys’ high school basketball from Thursday: Urbandale over Ottumwa 63-51, ADM defeated Newton 78-58, Fairfield over Knoxville 68-63, Mount Vernon over Grinnell 62-41, and Dallas Center-Grimes defeated Indianola 64-58.
On Friday night (2/15), the girls’ high school basketball playoffs resume. In 1A Region 5, Keota is at Montezuma. We’ll have that game on KBOE-FM with coverage at 6:45 and tipoff at 7. Also in 1A Region 5, Sigourney hosts Holy Trinity. 1A Region 4: Lynnville-Sully hosts Meskwaki Settlement School. 1A Region 6, North Mahaska’s girls take on Bedford in Chariton. It’s one and done for the Oskaloosa girls basketball team. Washington defeated the Indians 44-28 Wednesday night (2/13) in the opening round of the Class 4A Region 7 playoffs. Kaylee Johnson had six points to lead Oskaloosa; the Indians finish the year with a 2-19 record.
Also in Class 4A girls basketball last night, in Region 4, Bondurant-Farrar eliminated Newton 51-37. In Region 8, Norwalk defeated Knoxville 50-45; Norwalk plays at Pella Saturday night. In Class 5A, Ottumwa beat Des Moines Hoover 60-14; the Bulldogs play at Dowling Catholic in West Des Moines Saturday night.
In Class 1A girls: Region 4, Lynnville-Sully over Iowa Mennonite 53-45; Region 5, Montezuma routed Moravia 82-16, Keota over Moulton-Udell 50-33, Sigourney over Winfield-Mount Union 41-17. Region 6, North Mahaska over Southeast Warren 68-17.
2A girls Region 6: Pella Christian over Pekin 66-53. 3A girls Region 7: North Polk defeated PCM 64-35 and South Tama over Centerville 69-35.
The much-delayed boys district playoffs got under way Wednesday night (2/13). 1A District 9: Colo-Nesco over Tri-County 61-46. 2A District 9: Davis County over Van Buren 64-47 and Albia defeated Williamsburg 66-64. 2A District 10: Pleasantville beat Colfax-Mingo 76-45 and Chariton over Interstate 35 38-29.
There are more boys district playoff games on Thursday (2/14). There’s a 1A District 9 doubleheader in Montezuma with Sigourney against Baxter at 6:30, followed by Montezuma versus Colo-Nesco at 8. Luke Combs Admits to All the Feels

It’s an honor just to be nominated. But what if that nomination gets your hopes up, and then you don’t win? Enter a full range of emotions.
After the Grammy after-parties, Luke Combs posted a series of pictures on social media, basically sharing that the people in his life were the best awards an artist could win. But he admits, he didn’t always feel that way.
“I get to wake up this morning with a better outlook on life than when I went to bed last night. I can’t say that when the words “And the Grammy goes to…” didn’t have my name at the end of them, that it didn’t hurt, that I wasn’t mad, or that I didn’t want to win. Of course I wanted to win, everyone who is nominated for a Grammy wants to win, that’s just human nature.
“After a fun night of after parties mixed with feeling sorry for myself I realize something, how blessed I am, win or lose.”
Combs goes on to caption each of the six pictures of those blessings: his manager, his fans, his fiance, his friends and his band. Then he makes himself and his followers a promise.
“So the next time that envelope opens and “The Grammy goes to…” someone else, I’ll be OK with it, I won’t let it get the best of me,” he wrote, “because I am surrounded by the best people in the world every day and that is something truly worth cherishing. Awards are great. But I’m not gonna sit in my house 25 years from now and look at my CMA Award and be like, ’Man, that award is what makes me feel like my life has been well lived.’
“I know it’s gonna be the memories I made with the people I care about,” he’d said.
The Grammy Award for best new artist went to English singer-songwriter Dua Lipa.

A year after the Parkland massacre, 17 victims are being remembered

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre a year ago renewed the national debate on guns and school safety, turned some victims’ parents and surviving students into political activists and at least temporarily ended the local sheriff’s career.
But Thursday’s anniversary will primarily be about remembering the 14 students and three staff members who died in the third high-profile mass shooting in Florida since 2016. An interfaith service will be held at a Parkland park, near the school, to remember the victims.
Many Stoneman Douglas students arrived on campus Thursday wearing headphones and the burgundy #MSDStrong T-shirts that have become an emblem of the tragedy.
Outside the school, angel stakes for each of the 17 victims bordered the school’s landscaped sign. While absenteeism was expected to be high Thursday, freshman Matthew Sabia said he attended to show support and participate in activities.
“I want to show respect to what happened. The students who were here are probably sad and don’t want to think too much about it. We don’t really talk about it,” he said.
Classes were almost over last Valentine’s Day when authorities say a 19-year-old former student arrived on campus and began shooting. The rampage left 14 students and three school staffers dead.
Jogger Kara Cannizzaro stopped Thursday morning to pray at the memorial outside the school. She says “every single person of the community has been affected by this.”
Students also will perform service projects and observe a moment of silence and a non-denominational, temporary temple will open in neighboring Coral Springs for people to pay their respects. The structure will later be burned in a purification ceremony. Security throughout the community and at schools will be high.
“We don’t need (the anniversary) to remind us what happened. We live with it every day,” said businessman Andrew Pollack, whose 18-year-old daughter Meadow died in the attack. He met with President Donald Trump at the White House after the shooting and became an adviser to Gov. Ron DeSantis and his predecessor, Rick Scott. Other fathers like Fred Guttenberg and Manuel Oliver have become active in Democratic politics.
And victims’ relatives from both sides helped lead the successful push to remove Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. DeSantis suspended the Democratic sheriff last month, citing incompetence in his handling of the shooting. Israel is fighting the suspension in the state Senate and says he will try to win back the office in next year’s election.
The massacre also led some Stoneman Douglas students to form the group “March for Our Lives,” which holds rallies nationwide calling for tougher gun regulations and toured the country registering young adults to vote.
“It was the kids themselves that made Parkland an unusual shooting,” said Adam Winkler, a professor at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law and gun rights expert. Just in Florida, 49 people died in the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando and five died at Fort Lauderdale’s airport in 2017. There have been other notable mass shootings across the country during that period — at a Las Vegas concert, a Pittsburgh synagogue and a Texas high school. But none resonated politically like Stoneman Douglas.
“What we haven’t seen is a mobilization of the students in quite the same way,” Winkler said.
But Thursday will be mostly a day to push aside politics. Victims’ families who have spoken publicly say they will spend the day quietly, visiting their loved one’s grave or participating in low-key events like a community walk.
Winds pickup, wind chills drop Thursday; more snow by Sunday

Wind speeds increase and temperatures drop along with chances of a rain/snow mix on Thursday. Thursday starts out in the 30’s, but temperatures drop and winds pick up for the evening commute.
As this cold front moves across eastern Iowa, there is a slight opportunity for a rain/snow mix, though the impact on this looks very low. The wind and temperatures will be more noticeable than any precipitation that may fall briefly.
Wind chills dip below 0 degrees Thursday night and will stay that way through Friday night. The next system arrives in the form of snow by Sunday morning. It’s still too early to get an idea of accumulation totals.
It seems light to moderate accumulations are likely across Iowa and at the very least will cause some slick driving conditions again.
Meet Trixie the sweet Maltese mix

Trixie, the maltese mix, is our KBOE/KMZN Pet of the Week. Trixie, estimated to be about 3 years old, is a very sweet, cuddly, loving little gal who loves to be held and be loved on. Man arrested for stealing trucks

A man from Burlington was arrested in Eddyville for stealing two trucks from a construction site on consecutive days. The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office was told just before 8am Wednesday (2/13) that a utility truck had been stolen from 2686 Highway 63 in Oskaloosa some time during the evening hours. About 25 minutes later, the truck was spotted at the Eddyville Inn. Following an investigation, 47-year-old Robert Glenn Crabb of Burlington was arrested and charged with two counts of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. During the investigation, it was learned Crabb had taken a second truck from the same location on Monday night (2/11).
Oskaloosa and other area basketball games for tonight

No high school basketball last night. The winter storm has caused all the regular season and playoff games in the area scheduled for last night to be postponed or cancelled. Oskaloosa’s boys’ basketball game at Newton last night was cancelled and won’t be made up. Pella’s boys game at Mount Pleasant were cancelled, no word on a makeup date.
Tonight, Oskaloosa’s girls open the Class 4A region playoffs at Washington. We’ll have that game on KBOE-FM with tipoff at 7pm and pregame coverage at 6:45pm. And also tonight, Oskaloosa’s boys’ basketball team wraps up the regular season with a home game against Grinnell
Last night’s district playoff basketball games have been postponed. The boys’ 1A game with Tri-County at Colo-Nesco will now be played tonight (2/13) at 6pm. In 2A boys: Davis County plays Van Buren at 5:30pm in Albia, followed by Albia against Williamsburg at 7pm. Also in 2A boys, Pleasantville meets Colfax-Mingo at 6:30pm in Chariton….followed by Chariton hosting Interstate 35 at 8pm tonight.
Checking the girls’ district basketball schedule, in Class 1A, North Mahaska’s home game with Southeast Warren will be played tonight at 7pm—and you can hear it on KMZN AM and FM with coverage starting at 6:45pm tonight. Moravia at Montezuma, Moulton-Udell at Keota, Winfield-Mount Union at Sigourney and Iowa Mennonite at Lynnville-Sully will all be played tonight at 7pm. And in Class 2A girls, the Pella Christian versus Pekin game will now be played in Sigourney with a 5:30pm tipoff tonight.
