Boy raises money for border wall with hot chocolate stand

A 7-year-old boy in Texas has raised more than $2,200 for President Donald Trump’s border wall through a hot chocolate stand, but he and his parents say not everyone approves, with one person even calling the boy “little Hitler.”

The parents of 7-year-old Benton Stevens say their son wanted to start a fundraiser after watching Trump’s State of the Union address in early February, so he begged to set up a hot chocolate stand.

“Every day, he would get off the bus and say, ‘Mom, can we go do my stand?'” said Benton’s mother, Jennifer Stevens.

Benton set up Saturday and Sunday at an Austin, TX, strip mall in order to raise money for the proposed border wall. His older brothers helped him make signs stating the mission, and his mother helped him make the hot chocolate.

Benton and his parents say the reaction to the stand was mixed.

“A guy pointed at him in his car and then he said that we didn’t like brown people. I don’t understand that at all,” Jennifer Stevens said.

But Benton’s mother says when they explained the reactions to their son, it only “fired him up.”

“Some people were mad and calling me a ‘little Hitler’ and stuff, and some people were really happy,” Benton said.

According to his father Shane Stevens’ Facebook page, Benton’s efforts have so far raised more than $2,200.

Both Shane and Jennifer Stevens are members of the Republican National Committee and say they talk about politics with their children.

“People think he’s brainwashed,” said Jennifer Stevens. “Well, of course he supports Trump because we do, and he hears how we talk and this and that. Call that brainwashing, but I call it parenting because we instill our values in him.”

Benton says he wants to mail the money he raises for the wall to the president or go to Washington and give him the money in person.

Food poisonings prompt investigation after fundraiser feast

The Johnson County Public Health Department and the Iowa Department of Public Health are investigating reports of food poisoning following an event in Swisher.

The illnesses have been linked to the Swisher Men’s Club’s Game Feast Dinner this past weekend. The group’s facebook page says the fundraiser has been going on for 15 years and features dishes that include meat from animals that are often hunted.

The health departments are looking for anyone who may have attended the meal to try to track down the source of the illnesses. It’s asking attendees to email diana.vonstein@idph.iowa.gov with their contact information.

Johnson County Public Health Director Dave Koch said part of their investigative efforts have included taking part in a conference call with officials from the Iowa Department of Public Health on Tuesday.

Koch says part of the investigation will also include testing samples of the food that was served along with conducting tests on any individuals who think they may have contracted an illness.

It is unclear how many people may be claiming to be sick however the club posted the following message to their Facebook page which reads in part: “The Swisher Men’s Club is aware of a number of illnesses as a result of our Game Feast Dinner. We are actively working with the county and state health departments to determine the cause of these illnesses.”

Snow moderate to heavy Wednesday morning; tapering off by the afternoon

Most of eastern Iowa remains under a Winter Storm Warning as snow continues to fall through the morning hours.  Snowfall will be moderate to heavy at times through the morning and will have significant impacts on the commute.  By 3 p.m., very scattered snow showers or flurries will be the only thing left.

Most of the accumulation takes place before 9 a.m. on Wednesday.  Total accumulations will be range from 3 to 6 inches in most areas east of Decorah, to Waterloo and Oskaloosa. Points west of that line will see 6 to 8 inches.  This snow is much wetter and heavier and will be more difficult to shovel.

In addition, there could be a small amount of freezing rain toward the end of precipitation on Wednesday. That could cause a light glaze on untreated surfaces.  Winds could be gusty, as well, but the wet nature of the snow will limit blowing and drifting.

EXTENDED FORECAST:
Winters said the next system approaches the area over the weekend and could bring primarily rain to the area.

If you find yourself a little down in the dumps about celebrating Valentine’s Day solo, then stop what you’re doing and watch Hunter Hayes’ new video for “Heartbreak.”

The story moves along like an adorably lovesick version of the film Groundhog Day (even Hayes will agree,) but one crucial element is different for the Breaux Bridge, Louisiana native in his story, and that element is hope.

Because you can’t land a happy ending without hope, can you?

So just how did the very personal story of Hayes’ love life make it to his record?

“It’s one of my favorite songwriting stories I’ve ever been a part of,” Hayes tells CMT.com. “It started it in a journal, I left it unfinished until Gordie, Tawgs, and Simon took the conversation and gave me a place where it could become a song. I started journaling on a trip by myself to my ’future better half’ and became immediately aware of how important this message was to me.”

But it had to be a happy message, one of encouragement about the uncertainty of the future because that’s exactly how Hayes was approaching his romantic journey in real life.

And how he wanted to approach this music video, directed by Collin H. Duffy.  “We filmed everything in Los Angeles for this one over about two days,” Hayes said. “I’m confident I ran a marathon in those two days with all of the running shots I did. I couldn’t walk for a week.”

“I remember explaining my love life to Collin not as a series of relationships, but somewhat ’Groundhog Day’ but with a positive attitude. A sort of a get knocked down, get back up and keep going thing. I told him that optimism was one of the key elements. He told the story in such a brilliant way. I hope it gives people pure joy, happiness, and humor watching me spill coffee all over myself so many times.”

And hope for their own futures. Speaking of hope, if you were wishing for a new Hayes record, you should absolutely be optimistic.

“This is track three of a full-length project that isn’t out yet and at the moment that’s all that I can tell you…” he teased.

We do know, however, that a tour is on the way. Hayes recently revealed dates for his Closer To You Tour, which kicks off April 18 in Atlanta, Georgia.

“I don’t think a tour has ever meant so much to me.  It’s an exciting time not just because I’m going back on the road but I’m back on the road with the music from this new album which means the world to me.” he gushed.

Sen. Bernie Sanders says he’s running for president in 2020

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says he’s running for president in 2020.

The 77-year-old self-described democratic socialist challenged Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016 and told Vermont Public Radio on Tuesday that he planned to again seek the nomination.

Sanders has reshaped Democratic politics and earned a loyal following with his passionate defense of liberal proposals including free college tuition and single-payer health care. But he will face off against several other Democratic candidates who also want to appeal to the party’s base.

Still, Sanders’ name recognition, fundraising prowess and passion for liberal policies makes him a top-tier 2020 presidential contender.

Start looking for snow after 9 p.m. Tuesday and into Wednesday morning

Many areas of eastern Iowa will be under winter weather warnings and advisories Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the next storm system moves across the area.  Snow will start to fall mainly after 9 p.m. Tuesday with bands of heavy snow spreading throughout the area overnight.  Heavy snow will continue through the Wednesday morning commute. It’ll taper off to lighter snow by early Wednesday afternoon.  As the snow starts to end, freezing drizzle could fall and could create slick road conditions throughout the afternoon.

Most areas will see 3 to 6 inches with a corridor from Waterloo and points west seeing 6 to 8 inches.  This will be heavier, wetter snow as well leading to tougher removal when compared to the snow of this past weekend.  Plan on dry, quiet weather for Thursday and Friday. Precipitation could return for the weekend.
