Mahaska County Board meeting held yesterday

At a work session following Monday’s (2/4) regular Mahaska County Board meeting, the County Board met with officials from Oskaloosa and Pella and the South Central Regional Airport Agency.  The topic was how to deal with the loss of 220th Street if the airport is built.  220th is frequently used by farmers to get on to Highway 163.  But the plot for the proposed airport would remove 220th Street.  Mahaska County Board Chair Mark Groenendyk tells the No Coast Network what was agreed to at the work session.

“We’re looking at 235th Street (as an alternative).  They would like our secondary roads engineering department to come up with a rough physical number of dollars of what it would take to get 235th up to a farm to market road to handle the traffic required on losing 220th Street.”

It’s expected a rough estimate of the cost of creating an alternative for 220th Street will be ready in two weeks.  The Mahaska County Board, SCRAA officials and others will hold another work session on March 4.

Why the Super Bowl Halftime Show isn’t Ready for some country

Country music and the NFL have long enjoyed a cozy relationship — from Hank Williams Jr., Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill serving as longtime NFL theme performers to Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw reaching #17 on Billboard’s Hot Country chart. But when it comes to the Super Bowl, the alliance ends before the coin toss.

Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks, Underwood and Luke Bryan have all sung the National Anthem at the most watched television event of the year in the U.S., but since 1994 no halftime show has exclusively featured country acts. That year, Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker, Clint Black and The Judds — and a cavalcade of line dancers — performed from Atlanta’s Georgia Dome in a revue named “Rockin’ Country Sunday.”

Furthermore, aside from Shania Twain — who was a full-fledged pop crossover act by the time she shared the stage with No Doubt and Sting in 2003 in San Diego — no country act has performed during halftime in a quarter of a century.

The blackout continues with Sunday’s game at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, when Tim McGraw will debut his new single, “Thought About You,” during Super Bowl Llll’s pre-game festivities, but Maroon 5 and guests Travis Scott and Big Boi will play the halftime spectacular.

“This could be the biggest performance of an artist’s life as far as reaching a huge audience in one fell swoop,” says veteran Nashville label executive John Zarling. “It’s a shame that for nearly three decades now, there’s not been one single artist in the country format [other than Twain] that had the opportunity to be part of that moment.”

And what a moment it is. Though halftime performers don’t get paid for their 12 minutes of glory, they often score a monumental gain in sales and streaming. Following her 2017 halftime show, Lady Gaga saw a whopping 1,000 percent increase in her digital album and song sales, according to Nielsen. Other performers use their appearance as a platform to introduce new material or, as Madonna did in 2012, immediately afterward announce a world tour.

The NFL declined to comment, but a music industry executive who has consulted with the league believes “the NFL hasn’t booked a country act recently because they don’t think country plays internationally.”

The Super Bowl’s international audience is significant.  An estimated 160 million viewers worldwide watched the 2017 game, according to IBC.com, accounting for almost 50 million viewers outside the U.S. (111.3 million people watched domestically, according to Nielsen).

While country’s profile is rising internationally thanks to increased touring outside the U.S. and events like C2C Festival, which brings country headliners to London, Glasgow and Dublin (and expands to Berlin and Amsterdam this year), country artists generally do not have the global following of their pop, rock and hip-hop counterparts.

The Patriots defeated the Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl last night

For those who may have dozed off … the Patriots have won the Super Bowl.

New England topped the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in a game that dragged the high-def NFL back to the days of black-and-white TV. It was the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in the 53-year history of the game.

Tom Brady captured his record sixth NFL title by throwing for 262 yards, without a touchdown. The Patriots matched the Steelers for most Super Bowl wins, with six.

Julian Edelman caught 10 passes for 141 yards; he was the day’s only consistent offensive threat.

Brady engineered the game’s lone touchdown drive -a five-play, 69-yard march punctuated by an over-the-shoulder, 29-yard throw into the hands of tight end Rob Gronkowski. On the next play, Sony Michel scored on a 2-yard plunge with 7 minutes to play for a 10-3 lead.

But the real stars of this game were the New England defenders, who smothered Rams quarterback Jared Goff, holding him to 229 yards that felt like less.

After New England’s score, Goff moved the Rams down to the New England 28 with 4:30 left. But the third-year quarterback threw one up for grabs near the end zone and cornerback Stephon Gilmore stepped in front for the interception.

Rivera murder trial moved to September

A new trial date has been set for the man accused of the abduction and stabbing death of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts in Brooklyn.  On Friday (2/1), a judge set trial for 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera on September 3 in the Poweshiek County courthouse in Montezuma. Trial had been set for April 16. Defense attorneys said they needed more time to go through a massive investigation file from prosecutors. Rivera is charged with first degree murder in the killing of Tibbetts, a University of Iowa student who disappeared while out for a run July 18 in her home town of Brooklyn. Investigators recovered her body a month later in a cornfield. A medical examiner has said Tibbetts was stabbed to death.  Rivera is a Mexican national who has been accused of being in the country illegally. He worked at a dairy farm a few miles from where Tibbetts disappeared.

Oskaloosa senior injures hand

A loss for Oskaloosa High’s boys’ basketball team.  Senior forward Cole Henry was injured during Thursday’s (1/31) practice.  Indians Coach Ryan Parker explains what happened.

“He complained that his hand hurt.  Part of it, I think was, he caught a lob, hit the hand against the rim and came down with his hand hurting.  He went a couple more possessions and finally told me that he couldn’t do it any more.  So we sent him to the doctor.”

And what did the doctor say?

“A broken hand….(he’ll) be out probably close to three weeks.”

Henry is averaging 20.7 points a game along with 11.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists….and he has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Northern Iowa next year.  The Indians play at Pella tonight (2/1).  We’ll have the Oskaloosa boys’ and girls’ games on KBOE-FM; coverage starts at 6, girls’ game at 6:15 and the boys’ game around 7:45.
