Mark Wills inducted into the Grand Ole Opry

What makes Mark Willis’ music timeless is he knows that anyone will fall for a good story. He continues to perform songs that set the scene and takes listeners on journeys that span years in seconds; like he does in the Romeo and Juliet setup in the romance that plays out in his 1996 breakout hit, “Jacob’s Ladder”

“I think the art of storytelling was huge back then,” Wills tells CMT of ‘90’s country music. “I think if you get down to it, that’s what country music fans want now. I think they want to get back to great stories.”

Wills also believes his solid storytelling songs such as “I Do (Cherish You),” “19 Somethin’,” and “Back at One” are what got him an invitation to the Grand Ole Opry. He was formally inducted Friday night (Jan. 11) at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

“I am so glad that they waited until this time in my career,” Wills adds. “I think as a young person, I would have been honored to have been an Opry member, but I think as we season in our lives things become more important to us. They become more treasured.

“It was a whirlwind back at the beginning of my career. As I look back on my career, and I look back on the hits that I’ve had, and as I’m embraced by the Opry family by being their newest member, I think it makes me more appreciative of it today than it would have if I were a 24-year-old kid.”

Wills is working on new music that will be released later in the year.

“There is a big influx of ‘90s-inspired music out there, and I do feel honored to have been a big part of that,” Wills says. “So, what I’m looking at doing today is revitalizing that ‘90s country sound with 2019 production.”

January 14: On this day

On this day in 1976, Glen Campbell’s signature song “Rhinestone Cowboy” was up for nominations for a Grammy Award for Best Country Song as well as for Record of the Year, (but didn’t win). Written by Larry Weiss, Campbell first heard the song on the radio during a tour of Australia and decided to record it.

Officials continue to search for missing Clayton County teen

Officials with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office continue to ask for the public’s help as they continue to search for a missing 16-year-old girl.

Jody Palmer, 16, of rural Colesburg, disappeared at around midnight on January 5. On Saturday, investigators announced they want to talk to anyone who may have been in contact with Jody in the weeks leading up to her disappearance.

The search for Jody, which now includes investigators from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, has turned up little information. Officials said information they collected indicate she may have traveled east out of the state of Iowa. However, they said she might be attempting to travel to California.

If you have any information in the case, you are asked to call the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office at 563-245-2422.

Judge declines to dismiss Ben & Jerry’s lawsuit

A judge has ruled against Ben & Jerry’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit alleging the ice cream maker misleads consumers about its environmental practices.

Vermont Public Radio reports a Washington, D.C., associate judge ruled the lawsuit “alleges facts sufficient to advance a plausible claim.”

The lawsuit filed in July by the Organic Consumers Association claims Unilever, the parent company of Ben & Jerry’s, uses advertising to create a false perception that the ice cream maker is “committed to a clean environment and high animal welfare standards.”

The nonprofit says most of the milk used in the ice cream doesn’t meet its standards for animal care, and farms supplying the company are polluting lakes.

A Ben & Jerry’s spokeswoman has declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Missing Wisconsin girl found alive; suspect in custody

A 13-year-old northwestern Wisconsin girl who went missing in October after her parents were killed has been found alive, authorities said Thursday.

The Barron County Sheriff’s Department said on its Facebook page that Jayme Closs has been located and that a suspect was taken into custody.  Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said the sheriff’s office in Douglas County, about 70 miles north of Barron County, located the girl. A suspect was apprehended a short time later. The statement did not say where Jayme was found or give any further information about the suspect.

The sheriff’s office plans to hold a news conference this morning to discuss the case. Gillian Drummond, a spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Department of Justice, and Leonard Peace, a spokesman for the FBI in Wisconsin, declined comment Thursday evening. Both agencies have been involved in the search for Jayme.

Jayme Closs has been missing since her parents, James and Denise Closs, were found shot to death Oct. 15 in the family’s home near Barron. Investigators said Jayme was quickly ruled out as a suspect.

Detectives pursued thousands of tips, watched dozens of surveillance videos and conducted numerous searches in the effort to find Jayme. Some tips led officials to recruit 2,000 volunteers for a massive ground search on Oct. 23.

Fitzgerald said in November that he kept similar cases in the back of his mind as he worked to find Jayme, including the abduction of Elizabeth Smart, who was taken from her Salt Lake City home in 2002, when she was 14 years old. She was rescued nine months later with the help of two witnesses who recognized her abductors from an “America’s Most Wanted” episode.  “I have a gut feeling she’s (Jayme’s) still alive. I’ve always been a glass half-full kind of guy,” Fitzgerald said at the time.

Barron Mayor Ron Fladten said Thursday night he hadn’t heard any details about Jayme’s discovery yet but was overjoyed at learning she is alive.  “There was a lot of discouragement because this took quite a while to play out,” Fladten said. “A lot of people have been praying daily, as I have. It’s just a great result we got tonight. It’s unbelievable. It’s like taking a big black cloud in the sky and getting rid of it and the sun comes out again.”

He acknowledged that Jayme may not be the same person she was before she disappeared.  “I hope that she’s in good shape,” the mayor said. “She’s no doubt been through just a terrible ordeal. I think everybody wishes her a good recovery and a happy life going into the future.”

The notification that Jayme had been found came just four hours after Fitzgerald had taken to Twitter to debunk a report that she had been found alive near Walworth County. Douglas County, where Jayme was found, is hundreds of miles northwest of Walworth County.
