Forever Stamps now 55 cents

The price of a Forever Stamp is now 55 cents.

The nickel increase is the largest hike since 1991 when the stamp went from 25 to 29 cents.

The United States Postal Service is also increasing the cost of priority mail by 5.9 percent.

The postal service lost nearly $4 billion in 2018, reportedly from lower mail volume and pension and health care costs.

Body of missing Marshalltown teen found Sunday morning

A missing Marshalltown teenager was found dead, Sunday morning, officials said in a news release.

The body of Corey Brown, 13, was found around 10:45 a.m. in what officials described as a “secluded area on the west side of Marshalltown.”  “At this time, there is no evidence or information that indicates criminal activity is connected to this missing person/death investigation,” said Police Chief Michael Tupper in the release. “However, this is still an active investigation and all possible scenarios will be thoroughly investigated.”

Tupper said no other public information was available at the time of the release but that authorities would inform the public when additional details were available.

“The Brown family requests everyone honor and respect their privacy,” the chief said. “The family wishes to thank the Marshalltown/Marshall County community for all of their support during this difficult time.”

Tupper said the family also appreciated help from public safety personnel and volunteers who worked to find Brown following his disappearance, January 22.

Rescuers heard missing 3-year-old calling out for his mother

It took three harrowing days for a search team to find Casey Hathaway alive.

Facing heavy rain, gusty winds and low visibility, rescuers and law enforcement combed the difficult Craven County, North Carolina, terrain — focusing on up to 1,000 acres of heavily wooded areas.

On day three, a tip led the search team to a spot where they were able to hear the 3-year-old calling out for his mother, Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes told reporters at a news conference Thursday night.

They followed his call 40 to 50 yards into the woods, through water, to find Casey tangled in vines and thorns, Hughes said.

He was cold, authorities said, but alive and responsive.

Casey was playing with two other relatives in his great-grandmother’s backyard Tuesday, but didn’t come inside when the others did, CNN affiliate WTVD reported.

His family searched for him for 45 minutes before calling 911, Hughes said.

“He was walking in the woods back there and we can’t find him,” his great-grandmother told the 911 dispatcher. “The other ones come through the house but left him there and he walked off somewhere and we can’t find him.”

Tuesday’s Mahaska County Board meeting

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors wants to talk further with the County’s compensation board before voting on pay increases for elected officials.  At Tuesday morning’s (1/22) meeting, the County Board discussed various proposals.  Board Chairman Mark Groenendyk said he favored a three percent across the board increase for elected officials, while Supervisor Steve Parker favored a 5.3 percent increase for the County Sheriff, a four percent raise for the County Attorney and smaller raises for the remaining elected officials.  The County Board voted to table the matter and ask the compensation board to meet and have a proposal ready for the County Board to consider by their next meeting on February 4.  But four of the six members of the compensation board must agree to hold a meeting, so there’s no guarantee the County Board will get a new proposal.

Dead steer found, animals rescued in Monroe County

Animal rescue officials say they’ve found a dead steer and rescued seven other ailing animals from a rural Monroe County property.  The Animal Rescue League of Iowa says in a news release that its response team helped Monroe County officials rescue three horses, one burro, a steer and two dogs that were left in freezing weather with no food, water or shelter. One dead steer was found on the property. The group says two of the horses were underweight and the steer was suffering pain from neglected hooves and a hind injury. The burro’s halter had been on so long it had rubbed the hair away and had to be cut off.  Charges are pending against the animals’ owner.
