Talks on government shutdown continue on Sunday
White House officials and congressional aides are returning Sunday to talks on how to get the government reopened, though they wrapped up the first round of weekend talks without a breakthrough.
President Donald Trump tweeted: “Not much headway made today.” The president later tweeted that he planned to go to his retreat at Camp David, Maryland, on Sunday morning to discuss borders security and other topics with senior staff at a separate meeting.
Democrats agreed there had been little movement Saturday, saying the White House did not budge on the president’s key demand, $5.6 billion to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Kid Rock stirs more controversy with planned bar sign in Nashville
Singer Kid Rock has hit another sour note with some in Nashville, this time over a large sign planned for his recently opened bar.
News outlets report the 20-foot-tall (6-meter-tall) neon sign will feature a giant guitar in which the base of the instrument is intentionally shaped like a woman’s buttocks. Metro Council approved the necessary aerial encroachment to allow for construction and installation of the sign. Mayor David Briley signed into law the council resolution authorizing the sign Friday. But its approval didn’t sit well with several council members, who called the sign tacky and bemoaned that Lower Broadway has steered further away from a place for family fun.
In November, Kid Rock’s profane comments on live TV got him booted from leading the Nashville Christmas Parade.

Oskaloosa Boys’ basketball wins and the girls’ take a loss
Oskaloosa’s boys’ basketball team snapped their two game losing streak in a big way Friday night (1/4). The Indians scored a 63-53 win at Indianola….with senior forward Cole Henry sparking the offense. The Northern Iowa recruit had a career high 43 points.
“To be honest with you, I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. I don’t even think half of my points were isolations, they were all…my teammates throwing me amazing passes. I had so many uncontested layups and dunks tonight, it’s not even funny.”
After the game, Oskaloosa Coach Ryan Parker said his team renewed its focus on its big men: Henry, who is 6 foot 10 and Xavier Foster, who is seven feet tall.
“Before Christmas break, we sort of got away from that. We started just shooting the ball and everybody that was open started shooting the ball and shots weren’t falling and we kept shooting and shooting and shooting. Not that we don’t have great shooters on this team, but that’s not necessarily our strength. Our strength is 6’10 and 7′.”
Oskaloosa’s boys are now 8-2 on the season and 4-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
In Friday’s girls’ matchup, Indianola defeated Oskaloosa 60-19. Emma Kelderman had five points for Osky, who are now 2-9 overall and 1-5 in the Conference. Oskaloosa’s boys and girls will be off until Friday night (1/11), when they host Pella Christian.

CHRIS JANSON’S GUITAR WAS STOLEN, AND HE NEEDS HELP
Chris Janson is calling on his fans to ask for help in recovering a precious guitar that has been stolen from him. The “Drunk Girl” singer turned to Facebook on Thursday (Jan. 3) to post a photo of himself with a custom-made acoustic guitar, writing, “Over the Holiday break, my custom Fender guitar was stolen out of the car, after playing the Opry. If ANYone sees or hears about it, please notify local PD and ME! Thanks y’all.”
The rising singer-songwriter is a regular at the Grand Ole Opry, and he performed as part of the Opry at the Ryman series on Dec. 14 and again on Dec. 22. He says he’s not interested in punishing the person who stole his guitar as much as he’s interested in the safe return of the instrument.

Thrift store sells vintage items to help animals in need
A Heartland thrift store is now open to help animals in need. Patty’s Animal Thrift Store recently opened in Fairfield. “It was started in honor of my dear friend Patty Miller who passed away in May of 2017 very unexpectedly,” said trustee Pam Brackenbury.
It was Patty’s love for animals that inspired the shop and its cause. “Her parents were animal lovers, the whole family. She had a goose named Colonel when she was a very young girl. [She] spent her life taking care of strays and sick animals—anything that crossed her path. She was a volunteer at the Blank Park Zoo up in Des Moines where she lived. She could just never walk away from an animal in need,” she explained.
The proceeds that come from the merchandise sold will help animals directly. “It’s going to go to groups in rural Iowa that are dedicated to animal rescue and a lot of these groups are very small and are struggling for funds and so we’ve decided to focus there,” Brackenbury said.
In the shop, you’ll find a variety of unique items like one-of-a-kind mugs and vintage toys. “Patty had, like I said, a 50-year collection and part of it has already gone to auction, but we have a lot of stuff left, stuff in storage still even. We do have a vintage room here in the store,” said Brackenbury.
Despite its recent inauguration the shop has already started to help some animal rescue organizations. “We were able to send $1,000 to Heartland Humane Society over in Ottumwa,” she said. Patty’s Animal Thrift Store is located at 50 S. 9th St. across the Family Video store in Fairfield. It is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Patty’s Animal Thrift Store accepts just about all kinds of donations that could be sold to save a defenseless animal in need.
Heartland residents have already donated items. Clothes, large appliances, furniture and toys are not accepted due to space limitations.
