Pennsylvania corrections officials say Bill Cosby will serve his sentence at a new state prison in the Philadelphia suburbs. The Department of Corrections provided details of Cosby’s incarceration Wednesday, one day after the 81-year-old comedian was sentenced to three to 10 years for sexual assault. Cosby will serve his time at SCI Phoenix, about 20 miles from his gated estate. The $400 million prison opened two months ago. He’s being housed in a single cell near the infirmary. Corrections Secretary John Wetzel says the prison’s long-term goal is to place Cosby in the general population. Under prison policy, he’ll be allowed phone calls and visits and will get a chance to exercise. Wetzel says the prison is “taking all of the necessary precautions” to ensure the celebrity’s safety.

Oskaloosa volleyball takes a loss to Pella last night
Oskaloosa High’s volleyball team gave Pella all it could handle last night (9/25). The Indians won the first set 25-21, before the sixth-ranked Lady Dutch took the next three sets 25-18, 25-13 and 25-21 to win the match. Oskaloosa Coach Jen Comfort liked what she saw from her team.
“I was very proud of the effort that the girls gave and I thought it was a good team effort. I really challenged them on their energy and their effort and I think that came through and it showed with our execution. So definitely proud of the Indians on our side of the net.”
Faith DeRonde had 13 kills and Taylor Wills added 12 for Oskaloosa. Pella was led by senior Emily Holterhaus with 24 kills plus 8 blocks. Oskaloosa’s next game is next Tuesday night at Indianola.
Two candidates for Iowa House District 70 spoke at forum last night
Two of the three candidates for Iowa House District 79 spoke at a public forum in Oskaloosa Monday night. Republican Dustin Hite and Libertarian Nicholas Ryan took questions at Penn Central Mall. Hite was asked if he would roll back the privatization of Medicaid.
“I think the privatization of Medicaid started with all the best of intentions and that was to decrease the cost to Iowa taxpayers. As you know, sometimes we do things and the results aren’t what we expect them to be. And when that’s the case, I think we as elected officials owe it to our constituents to have an open mind.”
When asked about eminent domain, relating to the proposed airport for Oskaloosa, Ryan said eminent domain has purposes—for building critical infrastructure like roads and power lines. But he doesn’t see the airport as a critical infrastructure project.
“But I think that particularly with Chapter 28E of the Iowa Code and Chapter 6A, which deals with condemnation proceedings, I think that we can do a lot better.”
Democratic candidate Samantha Klein did not attend. There’s another candidate forum tonight (9/25) at 6:30 at Penn Central Mall in Oskaloosa. This one features the four candidates for Mahaska County Supervisor: Republicans Steve Parker and Steve Wanders, Democrat Paul DeGeest and petition nominee Scott Van Veldhuizen.

Ben & Jerry’s creating “take back Congress” flavors
The founders of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in Bernie Sanders’ home state are putting their ice cream expertise to work to support seven congressional candidates they call progressive. Vermont’s Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are working with political action committee MoveOn to create ice cream flavors that reflect each candidate. They are asking for help in naming the flavors. Cohen says he will then make by hand about 40 pints of each to be raffled off to support the candidates. The candidates are Jess King in Pennsylvania, Lauren Underwood in Illinois, Aftab Pureval in Ohio, J.D. Scholten in Iowa, Ammar Campa Najjar in California, Stephany Rose Spaulding in Colorado and James Thompson in Kansas. Cohen says they all support “Medicare for all, debt-free public college and getting big money out of politics.”
