Retiring NASCAR Cup driver Kasey Kahne turned down an approach from leading team Stewart-Haas Racing for 2019. Autosport revealed earlier this month that Kurt Busch and sponsor Monster Energy will be leaving SHR to replace Jamie McMurray at Ganassi next season. Kahne, who has ended up at the midfield Leavine Family Racing team this season after losing his Hendrick seat, announced on Thursday that he will retire from full-time NASCAR racing despite his current team offering him a new two-year deal. Multiple sources have confirmed that SHR recently approached Kahne about Busch’s seat, but Kahne said he had already made up his mind about retiring. A spokesperson for Kahne declined to comment on the SHR interest. In his retirement message on social media, Kahne said he had “thought about this decision for many months, if not longer”.

Human remains found Tuesday at the creek where teenager Jake Wilson was last seen
Recreational kayakers’ discovered human remains in an area of Jake’s hometown authorities said they had searched more than a dozen times. Those remains were found Tuesday in and around Wolf Creek. Jake, an autistic teenager, told his family he was going for a walk near the creek before he vanished April 7. Authorities declined to say Thursday exactly where the remains were found. Investigators with the FBI and the state medical examiner’s office were assisting local authorities in forensically processing the area that search crews had combed up to 30 times previously. “If this is Jake, it’s not enough to (just) recover him for this family,” Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson said during a news conference in the city’s fire station. “We want to know how” he died.
La Porte City Police Chief Chris Brecher said it could take a couple of weeks to get DNA testing results from the remains. When asked if the remains could be those of Jake, Brecher said told reporters: “With what we have found, it’s consistent (with) what we’re looking for.” The remains were found downstream from where Jake was expected to have gone that evening, officials said. Since the remains were found, authorities have been working to clear the area to locate, hopefully, more definitive evidence. Brecher said the creek’s water level has lowered substantially since Wilson, 16, disappeared, and authorities believe that is what allowed the kayakers to make their discovery. Later in the news conference, the sheriff also mentioned the changes in the creek’s conditions, adding: “Why we didn’t find it very early on, I don’t know.”

Colorado husband charged in killing of pregnant wife, 2 young daughters after they were reported missing
A Colorado man has been charged in connection with the killing of his pregnant wife and two young daughters after the mother and their little girls went missing earlier this week. Shanann Watts, who was 15 weeks pregnant, and the couple’s daughters, Celeste, 3, and Bella, 4, were reported missing Monday by a family friend, according to police in Frederick, about 35 miles north of Denver. The FBI and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation joined local police on the missing persons case, and authorities Wednesday night announced the arrest of Watts’ husband, Chris Watts. Family friends who stood by the husband said they were shocked to hear of his arrest. Chris Watts had initially told reporters that his wife, 34, disappeared without a trace, leaving her purse and keys at home. Yesterday he confessed to killing all three of them and told authorities he could take them to where he buried the bodies. The bodies of all three females have been recovered and identified. Chris Watts, 33, was booked on three counts each of first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence.
Aretha Franklin dies of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76
Aretha Franklin, whose riveting voice made her a titan of American music, died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76 on Thursday, her niece, Sabrina Owens confirmed. Her death follows several years of painstakingly concealed medical issues, which led to regular show cancellations and extended absences from the public eye. Franklin was one of the transcendent cultural figures of the 20th Century. Raised on an eclectic musical diet of gospel, R&B, classical and jazz, she blossomed out of her father’s Detroit church to become the most distinguished female black artist of all time, breaking boundaries while placing nearly 100 hits on Billboard’s R&B chart — 20 of them reaching No. 1. The Queen of Soul, as she was coronated in the 1960s, leaves a sprawling legacy of classic songs that includes “Respect,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Chain of Fools,” “Baby I Love You,” “Angel,” “Think,” “Rock Steady,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Freeway of Love,” along with a bestselling gospel catalog.
Born in Memphis on March 25, 1942, Franklin moved at age 4 to Detroit when her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, took over duties at New Bethel Baptist Church. Turmoil set in early: Her mother left Detroit for Buffalo, N.Y., when Aretha was 6, and died four years later.
Still, Franklin grew up in an environment ideal for nurturing her skills. Her charismatic father was a preacher and singer with a national reputation, with sermons that became top-selling records and a gospel revue that toured the country. That brought important musical figures into the young singer’s orbit, including household guests such as James Cleveland, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King and Sam Cooke. Growing up on Detroit’s northwest side, she was a childhood friend of Smokey Robinson.
She became a singing prodigy at New Bethel, and her sisters, Carolyn and Erma, also honed their gospel skills. But it was Aretha who steadily emerged as the standout, and by age 14 she was accompanying her father on his gospel travels.

Murder conviction upheld in Ottumwa

Davila’s appeal claimed prosecutors improperly introduced evidence of drug use and that prosecutors suggested Hernandez was asleep when he was shot. But the appeals court says the prosecution won the case because of strong evidence. Davila is serving a 50 year sentence.
