Matt Kenseth takes the AAA 400 Drive For Autism

Matt Kenseth held off a late charge from Kyle Larson on Sunday afternoon at Dover International Speedway to claim his first victory of the season, capping Toyota’s weekend sweep of all three races at “The Monster Mile.” Matt Crafton won Friday’s Camping World Truck Series race and Erik Jones followed with a victory in Saturday’s X-FINITY Series event. Kenseth led the final forty-seven laps on Sunday, nipping Larson at the checkered flag by eighteen one-hundredths of a second. It’s his thirty-seventh career victory and third at Dover. Kenseth’s last Cup Series win had come in New Hampshire last fall, twenty races ago. He started tenth on Sunday and led briefly during the first half of the race before taking control down the stretch.

The race was red-flagged for more than eleven minutes after Jimmie Johnson’s transmission failure triggered an eighteen-car accident along the frontstretch less than fifty laps from the finish. Johnson, at the front of the field on a restart, could not get his car into third gear and up to speed. Martin Truex Junior drove into the rear of Johnson’s Chevrolet and the contact sent cars spinning across the track. Attrition left just fourteen cars running on the lead lap at the finish, a season low in the Sprint Cup Series. Larson led eighty-five laps en route to his second-place finish.

Rookie Chase Elliott ran third with Kasey Kahne and Kurt Busch completing the top five. Pole sitter Kevin Harvick led a race-high 117 laps, all in the first half, before fading to fifteenth place – enough to keep him atop the regular-season point standings.

Osky Students Visit State Capitol

DES MOINES — Students from teacher Mrs. Braida’s fifth-grade class at Oskaloosa Elementary School toured the historic office of Secretary of State Paul Pate at the Iowa State Capitol Friday.
“We just wrapped up our unit on Iowa History, and we enjoyed the opportunity to see the great things we’ve learned about at school,” said Braida.

They were provided an informational tour of the office by Secretary Paul Pate’s staff, which included examining the original handwritten Iowa Constitution, exploring the Capitol’s three-story vault and learning about the rich architectural history of the Iowa Secretary of State’s Capitol Office.

“Iowa has one of the most impressive state capitols in the country,” said Secretary Pate. “It is a historical treasure all Iowans should visit.” The Secretary’s Capitol Office is open for public tours on weekdays 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., separate from or in conjunction with a State Capitol Tour. City of Oskaloosa Releases Statement Regarding Local Option Sales Tax

Oskaloosa residents continued a tradition of using their pennies to invest in the community and quality of life by passing the LOSST ballot measure May 3 with 61{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} voter approval. Revenue from the one-cent tax will be used for investments in a new recreation and early childhood education center, public streets, trails and associated infrastructure over the next 20 years.
“Residents have been indicating support for the recreation & early childhood education project and roads for over a year and a half,” said Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt. “Tuesday’s ‘yes’ vote means we’ll continue to collect the penny tax for another 20 years, for investment in a new city building to serve area citizens from birth to age 100 by providing indoor recreation and early childhood education services.”
While the ballot measure passed in most areas of Mahaska County, residents in unincorporated Mahaska County and Fremont voted not to approve the one-cent sales tax on May 3, which means it is not collected or distributed in those areas of the county. The option tax revenue is distributed based on population to areas where the referendum was approved.
Option Tax History
The penny has been in existence since 1994 in Mahaska County and has been used to fund community facility improvements including the Law Enforcement Center, the Oskaloosa Public Library and construction of a new elementary school.
“The penny has been used by the community over the years to fund major capital investments that improve the quality of life for residents and help support the tax base,” said Krutzfeldt. “Using a sales tax penny means we avoid property tax increases while providing high quality facilities and services.”
Moving the Project Forward
The City of Oskaloosa will receive an estimated $11 million in revenue to be used on the project, based on population and approval of the measure. The Oskaloosa Community School District has pledged $7.5 million in capital funds using it’s SAVE penny which is restricted to facility infrastructure projects. The City of University Park, which approved the ballot by a 70{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} margin, has also pledged 10{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of its penny toward the recreation and early childhood education center project.
The City will begin working immediately with the School District, and other stakeholders to begin refining plans for the recreation and early childhood education center project. The first step in the process will be to further understand the community needs and how they mesh with available resources.
“Voters approved renewal of the penny with the expectation we would pursue development of the center. We are committed to pursuing the project on behalf of area families,” said Tom Richardson, President of the School Board. “An estimated 320 children and 120 employers daily are depending on the early childhood education services,” he said.

“We recognize that employees and families are making choices on where to live based on community amenities and quality of life. They’ll choose to drive for work to have better amenities for their family to use during their free time,” Krutzfeldt said. “Continuing to use our pennies to invest in infrastructure, recreation, and education helps position us to be the community of choice.”

Next Stop Dover International Speedway

Next stop Dover International Speedway for Sunday’s Triple-A 400 Drive for Autism, the twelfth race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series. Going back to last fall, Kevin Harvick has won two of the last three races on one-mile ovals including a dominating victory when the series last visited Dover during the 2015 post-season Chase. Harvick returns atop this year’s regular-season standings, enjoying a four-point advantage over Kyle Busch … And speaking of Busch, his crew chief – Adam Stevens – will sit out Sunday’s race while serving a suspension for violating NASCAR’s new lug-nut rule last weekend at Kansas Speedway. Todd Berrier, who holds the title of director of inspections at Joe Gibbs Racing, will call race strategy for the defending Sprint Cup champion.
