Mahaska County Supervisors Talk Roads, Memorial Day

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met for a very brief meeting Monday morning.

The main topic of the day turned out to be the secondary roads budget.

Dave Shanahan with Mahaska County Secondary Roads spoke with the Supervisors about a budget amendment that was needed before the new fiscal year that begins in July.

Chair Willie Van Weelden had several questions regarding why certain roads and items are being done before the items that are being brought up for the amendment.

According to Van Weelden, there are a few roads that have been recently serviced despite there being a lack of traffic on the road.

Shanahan explained that those are still listed as “Class A” roads, meaning that those roads have a higher priority than some of these other projects. He also said that if the Supervisors have questions on why certain roads are at Class A status, they can go through a process to have that lowered to a lower classification.

The vote passed on a 2-1 margin, with Van Weelden voting against, believing the remaining budget money could be enough if used wisely before July.

The Board also approved the use of the Mahaska County Courthouse flag poles for the Memorial Day Observance on the square. This event will be on the square for the first time. It was held at Forest Cemetery previously.

The Board also held a public hearing regarding a new ordinance, which is establishing a policy for construction and reconstruction of county roadways. This is something that Shanahan said all counties are doing and it is mainly to state that Mahaska County is following the Iowa Department of Transportation code.

The next scheduled meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors will be held on Monday, May 16, at the Mahaska County Courthouse. The meeting will be called to order at 9 AM.

Branstad, Democrats Criticize Each Other On Water Quality

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad and Democratic lawmakers are blaming each other for failing to pass legislation on water quality initiatives.

The Republican governor said Monday he’s disappointed the Democratic-controlled Senate didn’t approve a water quality funding bill passed in the Republican-majority House. The Legislature adjourned Friday.

Branstad, Republicans and Democrats proposed different bills amid a lawsuit by the Des Moines water utility that put a spotlight on farm runoff. Democrats criticized a GOP plan to use existing state dollars. Republicans shot down proposals by Democrats to raise the sales tax or use surplus money.

Branstad’s own plan to use money from an education infrastructure fund wasn’t supported by Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal said in a statement Monday the GOP plans would have diverted money from education funding.

Brad Keselowski Snapped Carl Edwards’ Two-Race Winning Streak

Brad Keselowski snapped Carl Edwards’ two-race winning streak on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, surviving a near-record number of cautions to notch his second victory of the season and take a firm hold on one of the sixteen spots available in the post-season Chase. Keselowski started seventh and led a race-high forty-six laps, including the final seventeen trips around the sprawling Alabama oval. The last of the day’s ten caution periods unfolded in Keselowski’s rear-view mirror with the checkered flag in sight. The accident along the frontstretch involved seven drivers including Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth. The ten yellow flags were one shy of the Talladega track record of eleven that was set in April 2004. Forty-one of the race’s 188 laps were run under caution, with a pair of major multi-car accidents disrupting the afternoon.

Less than thirty laps from the finish, Kurt Busch tapped Jimmie Johnson to trigger a twenty-one-car melee, more than half the starting field. Twenty laps later, a twelve-car incident on the backstretch took out Kenseth, who had led thirty-nine laps. Earlier, with the race at its halfway point, Chris Buescher took the brunt of a seven-car crash that ended with his Number-34 Ford barrel-rolling three times after contact from Michael Annett. None of the drivers involved in the numerous accidents were seriously injured … Edwards’ hopes for a third straight victory were finally dashed when he blew a right-front tire and collided with Dale Earnhardt Junior, saddling Edwards with a thirty-fifth-place finish … The race ended under caution with Kyle Busch grabbing second place. Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray and rookie pole sitter Chase Elliott completed the top five.
