Stuff The Bus Happening On July 31st

It’s almost time to Stuff the Bus! – Those familiar “yellow school bus” boxes will start disappearing from donation sites this week, but if you miss them don’t worry, you can still donate to Operation Backpack!

On Friday, July 31st, all donation boxes will make their way to the North Hy-Vee parking lot, where community members will have one last chance to donate supplies for Operation Backpack. The bus will be in the parking lot from 11am -1pm. Donating is quick and easy – come visit us on your lunch break!

As the donation boxes are filled, they will be used to literally stuff the bus!

In the weeks after Stuff the Bus, United Way, SIEDA, and Salvation Army volunteers will use the supplies to start putting backpacks together. In the past three years volunteers have put together and handed out around a thousand backpacks to needy students in the Oskaloosa area! These bags ensure the students are prepared and confident for the school year, and help them get more out of their education.

Operation Backpack Applications are also due July 31st. If you haven’t picked one up yet, visit the United Way office at 500 High Avenue West in Oskaloosa. Applications should be turned into SIEDA at 114 North Market Street in Oskaloosa on time to ensure your student gets a backpack. After all applications are processed, applicants will be contacted with a pick-up date and time. This year’s pickup dates will be August 17th-19th.

These events are only successful with the support of the entire community. Whether it’s donating or volunteering, both Operation Backpack and Stuff the Bus are great opportunities to make an impact in your Oskaloosa community. If you would like to help in preparing Oskaloosa students for school this year, or for information on Operation Backpack and Stuff the Bus, contact the United Way of Mahaska County at (641).673.6043 or by email at uwmc.coordinator@gmail.com.

Luke Bryan Weighs In On Confederate Flag Debate

Georgia boy Luke Bryan recently weighed in on the debate over the Confederate Flag. He said, “Where I grew up, I never understood the Confederate Flag t obe a negative thing, but if the Ku Klux Klan is going to walk around an turn the Confederate Flag into their deal…, it’s become a symbol of racism to a majority of people. And we live in a country where we have to listen to people’s opinions and work it out.”

Sprint Cup Win List Holding At 11

With Kyle Busch’s victory Sunday at Indianapolis, the list of Sprint Cup Series race winners this season holds steady at eleven with six races remaining in the regular season – but Busch is not yet eligible for the post-season Chase since he is outside the top thirty in points.

Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Junior, Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson have clinched spots on the 2015 Chase Grid. Post-season berths will go to the sixteen top eligible drivers based on race wins. If there are fewer than sixteen race winners in that group, then the field will be filled based on regular-season point standings.

The list of drivers who won last year but are still without a victory in 2015 includes A-J Allmendinger, Aric Almirola, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne … The six highest-placed non-winning drivers in the standings today are Jamie McMurray, Gordon, Ryan Newman, Paul Menard, Kahne and Clint Bowyer – who leads Almirola by thirty points for what would be the final Chase berth.

Ottumwa Police Apprehend Armed Man

On Monday, the Ottumwa Police Department received a report of two persons possibly being armed near the intersection of East Main and North Street in Ottumwa.  Officers began to check the exterior of 2121 East Main for one of the suspects.  While checking the residence, a male identified by police as Lorenzo Langarcia age 21, exited the front of 2202 E. Main and began to walk in the direction of officers.
Langarcia observed officers approaching and then ran back into the residence of 2202 E. Main.  Ottumwa Police Officers established a perimeter of the residence and obtained a search warrant to search the residence for Langarcia.  Additional police personnel were called in to assist in the apprehension of Langarcia.
Langarcia was eventually found hiding in an attic portion of the residence and taken into custody on his outstanding arrest warrants for:
· Controlled Substance Violation, a Class D Felony
· Eluding
· Violation of Probation, Original Charge Delivery of Methamphetamine
· Violation of Probation, Original Charge Carrying Weapons
· Violation of Probation, Burglary 1st Degree
After Langarcia was taken into custody, several members of his family became upset and approached officers causing a disturbance.  Langarcia’s mother, identified as Reynalda Camacho, age 57, of 2202 E. Main, was arrested and charged with 2 Counts of Assault on a Police Officer, both serious misdemeanors.  These charges are a result of Camacho grabbing a hold of one officer and later spitting on another officer.  Langarcia is being held in the Wapello County Jail with a $152,000 cash only bond. Camacho was released on a police citation for her charges.  When officers were conducting their initial search for Langarcia, officers observed firearms and ammunition inside the residence.  Officers subsequently obtained a 2nd search warrant to search for and seize the firearms and any additional contraband inside the residence.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Sanders On Top Of The World again

If there was any question as to whether or not Rodney Sanders is currently the best dirt modified driver in the world, Saturday’s performance at the 5th Annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Red Tail Tackle should settle the issue.

Sanders, who already owns nearly every coveted trophy the sport awards its champions, just keeps adding more hardware to his collection and placed a second WMDTC globe on his shelf with a dominating performance in Saturday’s two-part, 80-lap finale at the Deer Creek Speedway.

With second- and third-place finishes in Thursday and Friday’s preliminary features, the 25-year-old phenom from Happy, Texas, earned the pole position and led the field to the green flag Saturday night.

A former track champion at the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval in Spring Valley, Minn., Brandon Davis of Medford, Minn., led the first lap of the first segment from the outside of the front row with Terry Phillips and Sanders giving chase.

Sanders quickly disposed of Phillips and then powered past Davis to lead the eighth of 30 laps. He never trailed again and cashed $5,000 for his efforts.

In between the two halves, crew members for all 30 main event starters were given the opportunity to make any changes they could within a ten-minute window.

When the horn sounded to resume racing, Sanders led the pack to the start of the 50-lap second-round battle.

Three cautions midway through the race kept his chasers within striking distance, including Jason Hughes who captured the 2013 World Championship as well as Friday night’s preliminary feature.

Hughes stalked Sanders for the last 20 laps, but Sanders would not be denied the $15,000 top prize, bringing his total take to more than $20,000.

“I just concentrated on keeping the car up front and running straight laps and keeping my tire under me,” an elated Sanders said in victory lane. “We just had a great car and I can’t thank everyone that helps me out enough. This is awesome.

“I caught lapped traffic and was kind of looking to see where they were running but they were all over the place so I really didn’t know where I needed to go, so I was just trying to keep my momentum up. I never saw anybody but I heard them a little bit. I was just trying to do what I was doing and not slip up.”

While Sanders claimed his second WMDTC title in a row, it was also the second straight year that Hughes was the second driver to cross beneath the checkered flag here.

“Didn’t quite have enough for the 20 car, but hats off to them; they did a hell of a job this weekend,” said Hughes, who finished third behind Sanders and Davis in the first segment. “They’ve had a great year-couple of years-so they worked hard and earned it.

“We’re not too happy with second,” Hughes said, smiling. “It’s the first loser. I seen the back of his car a couple times last weekend, and we need to get up there and get the win. We’ll get him some time or another.”

Phillips, a former Featherlite Fall Jamboree winner here, registered a third-place finish for the third time in five World Modified Dirt Track Championship main events.

“It just wasn’t quite enough to get to the front,” said the son of legendary racer Larry Phillips. “We had a third-place car. We’ve got a little homework to do, haven’t raced my mod much, so I guess we have to get on the ball.

“We’ve got a pretty good piece here and we’re pretty consistent being up front, so we just have to get that little edge that they got.”

Phillips won Thursday’s preliminary feature, and the Springfield, Mo., veteran has never finished lower than ninth in five WMDTC championship races.

Another past Jamboree champion, Joey Jensen of Harris, Minn., ran ninth in the first segment and found the high side to his liking in the second segment as he climbed from ninth at the start to finish in the fourth spot.

“It started to clean off on the top up there and you could get some good bite off the end,” said Jensen, who blew an engine Thursday and has been using a powerplant borrowed from fellow racer Bob Gierke for the remainder of the weekend. “It’s a testament to these guys here that put the car underneath me.

“I want to thank all the fans for coming out and supporting this deal. If it wasn’t for you guys we wouldn’t have this.”

Rounding out the top five, New Sharon, Iowa’s Zack VanderBeek closed out a consistently fast month of July on a high note.

“We had a good car all week, really, we just had some circumstances that didn’t go our way and kind of set us back a little bit but the car was good,” VanderBeek said. “It’s just a pleasure to run with guys that race so clean. We’ll keep plugging away here, but we’ve got a lot of work to do to catch that 20 car.”

Sixth went to the winner of the inaugural World Modified Dirt Track Championship in 2011, Brad Waits, and he did not disappoint the fans this time either.

Opting to skip the first two nights of qualifying, Waits paid his entry fee on Saturday and started dead last in the second 15-lap Last Chance Race where he finished second to advance to the “C” Main.

From the 16th starting spot, he won the “C” Main and then finished seventh in the “B” Main to earn a spot in the “A” Main where he started 19th and climbed to eighth by the end of the first 30-lap segment.

After battling among the top five for most of the second 50-lap segment, the racer from nearby Rochester, Minn., settled for sixth at the finish.

Bobby Malchus of Red Oak, Texas, who came up just a little short in Thursday’s preliminary feature behind Phillips, raced to a seventh-place finish ahead of Davis, who slipped to eighth at the finish.

Craig Thatcher of Knapp, Wis., was ninth and Brad Dierks of Clarence, Iowa, finished in the tenth position.

Sanders now has his sights set on another possible payday when the United States Modified Touring Series kicks off the 2015 Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental on Thursday, Aug. 6, at the 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan.

More than 30 drivers are “in the hunt” for a $20,000 reward to win the points title, but Sanders, by virtue of his three USMTS regional points titles this season, stands to earn a record $100,000 if he can capture his third straight USMTS National Championship.

Oskaloosa School Lunch Prices Change for Upcoming Year

The Oskaloosa School Board met for a special meeting on Monday afternoon to discuss a couple of developments.

The major item was a change in hot lunch prices. According to state regulations, the school board had set the hot lunch prices too low, and needed to increase them by ten cents.

This occurred due to the number of students receiving free or reduced lunch prices and the history of Oskaloosa having low prices. The new hot lunch prices for the upcoming school year will be $2.30 for the elementary school and $2.40 for the middle and high schools. The district’s breakfast prices are not affected.

In other action, the board unanimously approved Ramona Braden as a new nurse in the district. She will be available for 168 days this year and will be working at the elementary school. Her appointment increases the number of nurses in the district to six.

Also, the board unanimously approved a two-year agreement with the district support staff.

The next scheduled meeting of the Oskaloosa School Board is August 10th at 7:00 pm in the meeting room at George Daily Auditorium.

Kyle Busch Extends Win Streak to Three Races

Kyle Busch drove away from Joey Logano on Sunday’s final restart and was not seriously challenged over the final two laps, extending his winning streak to three races and snapping Chevrolet’s twelve-year string of victories at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Busch started ninth and led three times for nineteen laps in the Number-18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. His margin of victory over Logano was three-tenths of a second with Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Junior and Denny Hamlin, one of Busch’s J-G-R teammates, completing the top five. Sunday’s win helped Busch sustain his rapid mid-season march toward a post-season berth.

After missing eleven races while recovering from injuries suffered during Speedweeks in February and then struggling with inconsistency in the first month back, Busch has now won four of his last five starts but still needs to reach the top thirty in the standings to be eligible for a post-season Chase berth. He’s climbed to thirty-second place and is just twenty-three points below the cutoff with six races left in the regular season. The last driver to win three straight Sprint Cup races is Jimmie Johnson, who actually put four wins in a row together during the 2007 Chase.

Pole sitter Carl Edwards, another one of Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, led only twenty laps of Sunday’s race and finished thirteenth … Busch’s victory was Toyota’s first Cup Series win at Indianapolis and gave the driver a weekend sweep at “The Brickyard.” He also won Saturday’s X-FINITY Series race … Matt DiBenedetto of B-K Racing was the highest-finishing rookie on Sunday. He placed thirty-second one day before celebrating his 24th birthday.
