Two people died and two were injured in a crash last evening in Mahaska County… The crash occured around 6:30 pm at Merino Avenue and 310th Street near Eddyville… A 2001 GMC pickup driven by 24 year old Eric David Hansen of Oskaloosa was headed north on Merino Avenue, when it failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck broadside by an eastbound 1999 Dodge Ram pickup driven by 24 year old Scotty Lee Van Polen of Fremont.

Both vehicles left the roadway and entered the ditch on the northeast corner of the intersection, where the GMC pickup landed on it’s roof… Killed in the crash were 24 year old Eric David Hansen of Oskaloosa, as well as a passenger in the Hansen pickup, 24 year old Megan Marie Moser of Winfield.

Both occupants of the other pickup, 24 year old Scotty Lee Van Polen and 27 year old John Curtis Van Polen, both of Fremont, complained of pain after the accident, but were not taken to the hospital.

Iowa State Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Department and emergency personnel from Mahaska and Wapello Counties.
