The first night of regional play in high school volleyball took place last night, and a large group of teams’ seasons came to an end.
In Class 1A Region 5, Montezuma slipped by Belle Plaine, 3 sets to 2. Monte moves into the next round to face Iowa Valley, who is ranked 9th in the state. Iowa Valley beat Lynnville-Sully in straight sets. That match will be in Marengo next Tuesday at 7 PM.
In Class 1A Region 6, WACO took out English Valleys in straight sets and will face Burlington Notre Dame next Tuesday. In the lower portion of the bracket, Keota fell in straight sets to Iowa Mennonite School. IMS has the unenviable task of having to bring down #5 Springville in the next round next Tuesday on the road.
In Region 8 in Class 1A, Sigourney and Tri-County was postponed until tonight due to a power outage. That game will begin at 7 PM this evening, and we will have reports from the matchup on 104.9 FM KBOE during the night. The winner of that match will face New London, who is ranked #10 in the state. They allowed only 11 points to Maharishi last night in all three sets combined. Melcher-Dallas fell to Southeast Warren, who will now face Twin Cedars in Bussey next Tuesday. In the bottom part of the bracket, Moravia barely slipped by Mormon Trail in straight sets, winning each set by no more than three points. The Mohawks will face Seymour next Tuesday at home.
In Class 2A Region 4, Pella Christian beat North Mahaska, 3 sets to 1, in a match you heard on 104.9 FM KBOE. Pella Christian now faces #3 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in a match you’ll hear next Tuesday. That will be on 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN and kboeradio.com starting around 6:45 for the 7 PM first serve.
Also in the Region 4 bracket, Pekin swept Van Buren, and will face Cardinal in Eldon next Tuesday in a very interesting matchup in the quarterfinals. In the bottom half of the bracket, Pleasantville was swept by Des Moines Christian.
In Class 2A Region 8, BGM was taken out in straight sets by Iowa City Regina, who will face #4 West Branch in the second round next Tuesday on the road.
