SICKELS PITCHES INDIANOLA PAST OSKY

Sickels pitches Indianola past Osky

The last time Indianola pitcher Sydney Sickels faced Oskaloosa, she struck out nine and allowed just one hit earlier this month.

The two teams faced again on Wednesday night and, this time, she fanned 14 Oskaloosa batters and against gave up one hit as Indianola, ranked fourth in Class 5A, coasted to a 10-0 win in six innings in a Little Hawkeye Conference action.

Sickels (20-1) retired the final 16 batters she faced after allowing a two-out double to Ava Vande Wall in the first inning.

“They’re a good ball club. They’re a 5A school and with a pitcher like Sickels, you can’t give up any runs,” Oskaloosa coach Jay Harms said. “If you do, you’re going to have a hard time getting them back.”

The first two innings was a pitching duel between Sickels and Oskaloosa’s Hayley Hacker.

The two went toe-to-toe for the first two innings as Hacker struck out seven in five innings or work including striking out the side in the second before Indianola touched Hacker for a run in the third inning.

“Both pitchers started out really throwing well with a lot of strikeouts early,” Harms said. “We threw a lot more off-speed than the first time against them. It got away from us and was almost a carbon copy of what happened at their place.”
