The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers are forecasting that the Des Moines River will dramatically rise to a crest of 14.9 feet at 7 PM on Thursday, June 25th before falling. The flow will be near 56,000 cubic feet per second.

Property owners in downtown Ottumwa and in other low-lying areas are being advised to deploy sewer backflow prevention at this time to prevent basement flooding. The downtown area is especially prone to sewer backups during high-water events on the Des Moines River. Most floor drains are designed to accept a plug. Owners of drains with float plugs should check the float to ensure proper operation. Residents and businesses with questions about plugging drains should consult a licensed plumber.

Individuals with property along the river are advised to take appropriate actions in anticipation of waters above flood stage. Residents along Walnut Street and Rabbit Run Road should prepare for water up over the road. Pay close attention to any watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service through the local media.
