Day One Of Girls Tennis Tournament Complete

High School girls’ tennis got its state tournament underway today, and the Oskaloosa area had several participants. In Class 1A doubles, the Grinnell team of Maddie Krumm and Kiara Peterson fell in straight sets to a duo from Columbus, who are now in the semifinals after dropping a total of five games in the first two rounds. In that same bracket, Pella’s Andrea DeBruin and Rachel Tvedt fell to another Columbus duo 2 sets to 1.

Fairfield’s team didn’t fare any better, as the tandem of Harley Cook and Karley Williams fell in straight sets to a duo from Red Oak, who are now in the semifinals. All three area teams lost in their consolation first round matchup as well.

In Class 1A singles, Grinnell’s Lily Hamilton held serve to make it into the semifinals. She beat Liz Nimmo of Norwalk 6-1, 6-1 and then slipped by Hannah Fox of Waverly-Shell Rock 6-1, 6-4. She will now face top seed Mara Pirscoveanu of Denison-Schleswig. That match will begin at 10 AM tomorrow morning at the Ankeny Tennis Complex. Also in singles, Pella’s Lily Roozeboom and Maharishi’s Dia Huggins fell in straight sets in the first round. Roozeboom also fell in her first consolation match, while Huggins is still alive for fifth place, as she beat Amber Schwarting of Osage in straight sets.

Huggins faces Hannah Fox tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 in the consolation quarterfinals.
